THE AGE OF THE SELJUQS NEW

The Idea of Iran, Vol. 6

Edmund Herzig, Wadham College, University of Oxord, and Sarah Stewart, SOAS, University of London (Eds)From their ancestral heartland by the shores of the Aral Sea, the medieval Oghuz Turks marched westwards in search of dominion. Their conquests led to control of a Muslim empire that united the territories of the eastern Islamic world, melded Turkic and Persian influences and transported Persian culture to Anatolia. In the eleventh and twelfth centuries the new Turkic-Persian symbiosis that had earlier emerged under the Samanids, Ghaznavids and Qara-Khanids came to fruition in a period that, under the enlightened rule of the Seljuq dynasty, combined imperial grandeur with remarkable artistic achievement. This latest volume in The Idea of Iran series focuses on a system of government based on Turkic ‘men of the sword’ and Persian ‘men of the pen’ that the Seljuqs (famous foes of the Crusader Frankish knights) consolidated in a form that endured for centuries. The book further explores key topics relating to the innovative Seljuq era, including: conflicted Sunni-Shi‘a relations between the Sunni Seljuq empire and Ismaili Fatimid caliphate; art, culture and ceramics; and poetry and architecture.192 PAGES 234 X 156MM NOVEMBER 20149781780769479 HARDBACK £39.50

MEMORY AND IDENTITY IN SASANIAN PERSIASacred History and the Historiography of Ancient Iran NEW

Touraj Daryaee, University of California, Irvine

The Sasanian Empire was one of the most significant empires of late antiquity. As the dominant force in the Middle East, spanning Egypt, India and Mesopotamia, the Sasanian kings from Ardashir I (224CE) ruled an imperial, centrally administrated, multi-lingual state. Here, Touraj Daryaee shows how the idea of Iran – its attributes, mores, values, boundaries and traditions – was brought to the Zoroastrian, Jewish and Christian populations of the Sasanian Empire and accepted and internalized by these religious communities. By tracing the political accommodations reached in the the Sasanian court back to the Zoroastrian texts of the Avesta, Daryaee demonstrates why scholars, scribes and the state continued to emulate and propagate the memory of the Peshdadian, Kayanian and Sasanian empires – even into the Islamic period. Memory and Identity in Sasanian Persia will be an essential work for scholars of Iran, Zoroastrianism and those seeking to understand the history of Middle-Eastern antiquity.

ANCIENT IRAN THROUGH CHINESE RECORDS NEW

Commodities and Culture

Berthold Laufer

In this major study – regarded as his most important work – the pioneering anthropologist, Berthold Laufer documents the cultural transfers that took place between China and Iran in early times. He does so by tracing the history of cultivated plants, drugs, products, minerals, metals, precious stones and textiles, in their migration from Persia to China and from China to Persia. Walnut, peach, apricot and olive, as well as more exotic products like jasmine, henna, indigo, lapis lazuli, amber, coral, gold, ebony, zinc and myrrh are all included. Few other publications provide so much informative detail about the way human activity has modified the natural world through the movement of plants and other natural resource products from one historical civilisation to another. The work also offers important detail for periods when Iranian sources are slim. With an introduction by Brian Spooner, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania, this classic work is once more available for all scholars of Iran, China and cultural exchange.

RITUAL CURSING IN IRAN NEW

Theology, Politics and the Public in Safavid Persia

Rosemary Stanfield-Johnson, University of Minnesota Duluth

Ritualized cursing had long been a part of popular culture in medieval and early modern Iran. When the Safavids seized power in 1501 and imposed Shi’i Islam as the established faith of the country, they appropriated the practice in the service of the state, compelling their subjects to curse ritually the first three (Sunni) caliphs in street and square – or face decapitation. Rosemary Stanfield-Johnson here demonstrates that in a largely oral society both the royal court and the emerging Shi’i religious establishment understood that controlling the medium meant controlling the message, and therefore society itself. Moreover, the ritual of public cursing also served the interests of the people. Because the new government could rely on a reservoir of shared cultural expression, it found willing participants among its subjects, for whom the practice became more than an act of compliance. With a new perspective on the transition from Sunni to Shi’i Iran, Ritual Cursing in Iran is essential for all those interested in Safavid Iran and Islamic history, as well as the relationship of politics and religion in the public sphere.

THE HISTORY OF THE LATE REVOLUTIONS IN PERSIA NEW

An Eyewitness Account of the Fall of the Safavid Dynasty

J.T. KrusinskiIntroduction by Rudi Matthee, University of Delaware

The fall of the powerful Safavid Dynasty (1501-1722) to invading Afghan tribesmen in 1722 marked a crucial turning point in the country’s history. Father Krusinski, Procurator-General of the Jesuit Mission and intermediary between the Papacy and the Safavid court, resided in Isfahan and was thus an eyewitness to the siege of the city. His account of the conditions and events preceding and during the siege and the subsequent demise of the Safavids is unique. It also offers key insights into the workings of the late Safavid state and government as well as the functions of the royal harem. This set includes the translation of the Clodius edition undertaken at the behest of the Ottoman Grand Vizier Damat Ibrahim. Together, these scarce volumes provide a unique source of information on late Safavid Persia. With an introduction by leading contemporary scholar, Rudi Matthee, the set will be welcomed by academics, collectors and libraries.

CONVERTING PERSIA NEW IN PAPERBACK

Religion and Power in the Safavid Empire

Rula Abisaab, University of Akron, Ohio

As the divide between Shi‘i and Sunni Muslims has dominated headlines in recent years, never before has it been more essential to examine the historical roots of Shi‘ism’s establishment in Iran, the only country in the Middle East to have Shi ‘ism as its official religion. It was under the Safavids (1501-1736 CE) that this occurred, and in this book, Rula Abisaab explains how and why this specific brand of Shi‘ism was adopted. Urban and legally based, it was brought to the region by leading Arab ulama from Ottoman Syria, and has changed the face of the region until this day. These émigré scholars furnished distinct sources of legitimacy for the Safavid monarchs, and an ideological defense against the Ottomans. Just as important at the time was a conscious and vivid process of ‘Persianization’, both at the state level and in society.

EARLY MODERN AND SAFAVID IRAN

IRAN AND THE WORLD IN THE SAFAVID AGEWillem Foor and Edmund Herzig both at University of Oxford (Eds) NEW IN PAPERBACK

The Safavid era is of special significance in the history of Iran. Under the Safavids, Iran was transformed and a state emerged which was the forerunner of the Iran of today in several important ways. But with the exception of diplomatic and commercial contacts with western European countries, little is known about the Safavids’ foreign relations – their commercial, cultural, social and political exchanges with the rest of the world. This book presents the most recent research into Safavid Iran’s foreign relations. It challenges the long-held notion that, with the adoption of Shi’ism, Iranians retreated into relative isolation, suggesting rather that they engaged with the world in unprecedented and exciting ways. With contributions from the leading authorities in the field, Iran and the World in the Safavid Age explores Iran’s relations with other countries and cultures. Examining how Iran was itself perceived as well as how it viewed the outside world, this groundbreaking book sheds new light on the history of Iran’s relations with the world beyond its borders and expands our understanding of this pivotal period.

FORMING NATIONAL IDENTITY IN IRANThe Idea of Homeland Derived from Ancient Persian and Islamic Imaginations of Place NEW

Ali Mozaffari, University of Western Australia

Modern Iran is a country with two significant but competing discourses of national identity, one stemming from ancient pre-Islamic customs and mythology, the other from Islamic Shiite practices and beliefs. This has left an often confused notion of identity in Iran. Ali Mozaffari explores the complex processes involved in the formation of Iranian national identity, laying particular stress upon the importance of place to ideas of homeland and the creation of a collective national identity. He illustrates his arguments through an analysis of the ancient Achaemenid capital of Persepolis and the Shiite rituals of Moharram. In a concluding part, he extends his analysis to the Ancient Iran Museum and the Islamic Period Museum, housed in the National Museum of Iran. An important work that offers powerful insights into the forces shaping national identity in Iran.

POLITICS AND CONTEMPORARY IRAN

EVERYDAY IRANA Provincial Portrait of the Islamic Republic NEW

Clarissa de Waal, University of Cambridge

Iran is a country which, despite its extensive coverage in the media, is often regarded as ‘mysterious’, ‘exotic’ and ‘other-worldly’. This attitude often stems from a focus on the rhetoric of controversial figures in Iranian politics, rather than looking at the everyday lives of Iranians themselves. Clarissa de Waal uses her training as an anthropologist to examine the experiences of individuals, with a focus of the province of Fars in southwest Iran. This serves to highlight contemporary Iran outside of the capital, which so often dominates western understanding of the country. Using a wide range of subjects, from public sector workers and entrepreneurs to Qashqa’i tribes people (both settled and nomadic), students and the unemployed, de Waal examines the everyday existence Iran’s population from a variety of backgrounds. She offers analysis and insights concerning ordinary Iranians’ lives and the impact the state has on them economically, socially and religiously.

POLITICAL ISLAM IN POST-REVOLUTIONARYIRAN NEW

Shi’i Ideologies in Islamist Discourse

Majid Mohammadi, Glenville State College, West Virginia

The relationship between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Western World is fraught with challenges and tensions. In order to generate the capacity for greater engagement and dialogue, there is a need for the West to better understand the complex ideological developments that are central to Iran. Majid Mohammadi charts the central concepts and nuances of the ideological map of post-revolutionary Iran, and examines the rise and development of Shi’i Islamism. He recognises that the Islamic Republic of Iran and Iranian political discourse are the outcome of contesting perspectives and ideologies: identity-oriented, socialist, nationalist, authoritarian, Shari’a, scripturalist, mystical, militarist and fascist. This is a comprehensive, comparative contribution to one of today’s most important topics: that of the relationship between Political Islam and the West.

ARAB-IRANIAN RIVALRY IN THE PERSIAN GULF NEW

Territorial Disputes and the Balance of Power in the Middle East

Farzad Cyrus Sharifi,Kings College London

Iranian ambitions in the Persian Gulf and rivalries with Arab neighbours are subject to intense – and heated – speculation, controversy and debate. Here, Farzad Cyrus Sharifi scrutinises the rival Arab-Iranian claims to Bahrain, the Shatt al-Arab waterway, and the Abu Musa and Tunbs islands in the years after World War II and before the Iranian revolution. Through investigation of previously unexamined primary materials and interviews with leading players, this book sheds new light on the evolution and dynamics of hegemonic and nationalistic Arab-Iranian rivalries and how these rivalries began to find symbolic expression through territorial disputes. Sharifi illustrates that these ongoing disputes – and the deep-seated

CONTROLLING IRANThe Struggle for Power in the Islamic Republic NEW

Siavush Randjbar-Daemi, University of Manchester

In the wake of the election of Hassan Rouhani as President of Iran, and the expectations that have been heaped upon a potential opening of the country, the struggle for power in Iran has never before been so widely commented upon, and yet, at the same time, so little understood. Here, Siavush Rand-jbar-Daemi presents an in-depth analysis of the presidency of Iran from the Iranian Revolution of 1978-79 to the present day. He examines the relationship of the presidency to the Supreme Leader: a position first held by Ayatollah Khomeini, and then by the former president, Ali Khameinei.

IRAN AND PAKISTAN Security, Diplomacy and American Influence NEW

Alex VatankaMiddle East Institute, Washington DC

The respective policies of the governments of Iran and Pakistan pose serious challenges to US interests in the Middle East, Asia and beyond. These two regional powers, with a combined population of around 300 million, have been historically intertwined in various cultural, religious and political ways. Pakistan, a politically fragmented and unstable but nuclear-armed state, has a history of proliferation dating back to the 1980s. Iran, on the other hand, continues to develop its nuclear program despite UN sanctions and looks to break its isolation whenever possible. Even at times of heightened tension, such as in the second half of the 1980s, Islamabad provided Tehran with valuable nuclear know-how. As US focus in the region increases, Vatanka explores whether this neighbourly cooperation is fuelled by cultural and religious bonds or, indeed, as a reaction to the West. Even more concerning for the US is the support that Iran and Pakistan each give to insurgent elements in Afghanistan and, indeed, Iran’s past funding of minority Shi‘i Pakistani militants. Vatanka presents the first comprehensive analysis of this long-standing and complex relationship which will prove essential reading for students, specialists and those interested in the Middle East.

THE DISSIDENT MULLAH NEW

Ayatollah Montazeri and the Struggle for Reform in Revolutionary Iran

Ulrich Von Schwerin

The Iranian cleric Ayatollah Montazeri (1922-2009) played an integral role in the founding of the Islamic Republic in the wake of the Iranian Revolution of 1978/9. Yet at the time of his death, Montazeri was considered one of the Islamic Republic’s fiercest critics. What made this man, who was once considered the leading advocate of the state doctrine of the ‘Guardianship of the Jurist’ (velayat-e faqih) and the designated successor to the supreme leader Ayatollah Khomeini, change his views? How did his political theory incorporate issues such as civil rights, pluralism and popular participation? And what influence did his ideas have on others? Ulrich von Schwerin’s book answers these questions by examining the evolution of Montazeri’s political thought over the course of five decades, and studies his role in the discourse on religion and politics in Iran. By offering a comprehensive examination of this dissident ayatollah’s political and social thought, von Schwerin sheds a new light on some of the most crucial events and vital protagonists of recent Iranian history.

FAMILY LAW IN CONTEMPORARY IRAN NEW

Women’s Rights Activism and Shari’a

Marianne BøeCentre for Women’s and Gender Studies, University of Bergen

Passed into law over a decade before the Iranian Revolution, the Family Protection Law drew the ire of the conservative clergy and the Ayatollah Khomeini, and was one of the first laws to be rescinded following the establishment of the Islamic Republic. The law was hardly a surprising target, however, since women’s status in Iran was then – and continues now to be – a central concern of Iranian political leaders, media commentators and international observers alike. Taking up the issue of women’s status in a modern context, Bøe offers a nuanced view of how women’s rights activists assert their positions within an Islamic context. By weaving together religious and historical texts and narratives with discourses on human rights, these women are able to communicate their views to those in political power. Through her substantial fieldwork and innovative analysis, Bøe undermines the traditional view of ‘Islamic Feminism’ as monolithic and clears a path to a new understanding of the role of women’s rights activists in shaping and synthesising debates on the shari’a, women’s rights and family law.

PERSIAN KINGSHIP AND ARCHITECTURE Strategies of Power in Iran from the Achaemenids to the Pahlavis NEW

Sussan Babaie, Coulthard Institute and Talinn Grigor, Brandeis University

Since the Shah went into exile and the Islamic Republic was established in 1979, the very idea of monarchy in Iran has become contentious. Yet, as leading scholars argue here, the institution of kingship has played a pivotal role in articulating an abstract notion of Iran since antiquity. This, in turn, has served as a unifying cultural force despite shifting political and religious allegiances. Analyses of palaces, mausoleums, art, architectural decoration and urban design from the Achaemenids to the Pahlavis show how architecture was appropriated by different rulers as an integral part of their strategies of legitimizing power. Drawing on archaeology, antiquity, and medieval Islamic and modern secular architectural history, ‘Persian Kingship and Architecture’ is indispensable for all those interested in Iranian studies and visual culture, as well as art, architectural and social history.

Art, Society and Revolution

Lynn Gumpert and Shiva Balaghi, both at New York University

When assessing the history of twentieth century cultural forms, non-western art can no longer remain relegated to the margins, viewed as derivative and imitative of canonical western artistic modes. This assessment of modern Iranian visual culture from the 1960’s and 1970’s suggests that modernity in Iran was a creative, complex and contested process. The book examines the expression of Iranian modernity in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, photography, posters and graphic arts. It highlights new modes of artistic production within an expanding institutional context: developments in Iranian art criticism, exhibition apparatus, education and patronage. The contributors also address changes in the iconography of Iranian art and in the increasingly social role of the artist. Ultimately, these patterns of artistic production influenced the art that accompanied the Iranian Revolution of 1979.

This groundbreaking work demonstrates that the visual arts serve as an important archival record of a critical period in Iranian history.

THE WILD RUE OF PERSIA NEW

Magic, Myth and Folklore in Iran

Bess Donaldson

The Wild Rue is a unique study of myth and magic in Iran. Bess Donaldson spent thirty years in Iran as both missionary and teacher and in this classic work she records the beliefs and superstitions of country at a time when they were increasingly under threat from the tremendous changes brought about by the Shah’s programme of modernisation. This earlier way of life, with its belief in angels and the evil eye, and with its age-old rituals surrounding childbirth and burial, is recounted in an informed yet highly readable text. A unique study of magic, myth and folklore with chapters on cosmology, names and numbers, snakes, dreams, talismans and signs, childbirth, angels, the evil eye, and the calendar. A classic work, long unavailable but now back in print.

THE LITERATURE OF THE IRANIAN DIASPORA NEW

Meaning and Identity since the Islamic Revolution

Sanaz Fotouhi, University of New South Wales

The 1979 Revolution in Iran caused the migration of millions of Iranians, many of whom wrote of, and are still writing of, their experiences. Formed at the junctions of the Iranian culture, English language and Western cultures, this body of work has not only formed a unique literary space, offering an insightful reflection of Iranian diasporic experiences and its shifting nature, but it has also been making a unique and understudied contribution to World Literatures in English as significant as Indian, African and Asian writing in English. Fotouhi traces the origins of the emerging body of diasporic Iranian literature in English, and uses these origins to examine the socio-political position and historical context from which they emerged. While situating this body of work through existing theories such as postcolonialism, Fatouhi sheds new light on the role of Iranian literature and culture in Western literature by showing that these writings distinctively reflect a diasporic experience unique to Iranians.

LAND OF THE TURQUOISE MOUNTAINS NEW

Journeys Across Iran

Cyrus Massoudi

For Cyrus Massoudi, a young Britishborn Iranian, the country his parents were forced to flee thirty years ago was a place wholly unknown to him. Wanting to make sense of his roots and piece together the deeply contradictory puzzle that is contemporary Iran, he embarked on a series of journeys that spanned hundreds of miles and through the many ebbs and flows of Iranian history. Rich portrayals of Sufis and ageing aristocrats, smugglers and underground rock bands are all woven together with history, religion and mythology to form a unique portrait of contemporary Iranian society. Land of the Turquoise Mountains reveals a world beyond the propagan-da-driven, media fuelled image of fractious, flag-burning fundamentalism, and provides a compelling glimpse both into the heart of a deeply misunderstood nation and into what it is to seek out and discover one’s heritage.

THE JEWS OF IRANThe History, Religion and Culture of a Community in the Islamic World NEW

Houman M. Sarshar

Living continuously in Iran for over 2700 years, Jews have played an integral role in the history of the country, and in the development of its society and culture. Examining ancient texts, objects, and art, as well as the medieval trade routes along which these would have travelled, The Jews of Iran offers in-depth analysis of the material and visual culture of this community. Additionally, an exploration of modern novels and accounts of Jewish-Iranian women’s experiences sheds light on the social history and transformations of the Jews of Iran from the rule of Cyrus the Great to the present day. By using the examples of women writers such as Gina Barkhordar Nahai and Dalia Sofer, the vital importance of communal memory and tradition to this community is drawn out. By examining the representation of identity construction through lenses of religion, gender, and ethnicity, the analysis of these writers’ work highlights how the writers attempt to create a new narrative integrating the Jews of Iran into the idea of what it means to be Iranian.
