    Course Outline and Expectations 2011-2012

IB Preparation Chemistry is a rigorous laboratory course that studies matter and its interactions. It istaken in Grade 10 and is a prerequisite for the IB Chemistry course.

Many of the expectations of this course follow inquiry-based lab skills. As much of the IB Chemistry

course is based problem solving, these skills are important to possess before you enter the IB Chemistrycourse.

Academic responsibilities1. Come to class on time.2. Be prepared for class with assignment and supplies.3. Be attentive and involved in class.4. Submit work that is completed honestly and individually - no copying others; and on time.5. If absent on test/quiz day you should take the make-up test the first day back to school in after

school detention.6. YOU are responsible for your academic success.

    7. Do all assigned reading and complete all homework beforeyou come to class. Remember thathomework checks (at the beginning of class) will be completed and will count toward your final

mark. There will also be occasional quizzes based on homework.8. Any late assignments will be given a mark of zero. Your parents will be informed if this happens.

Assignments will be due at the startof the class, not the end. Even if an assignment is handed inat the end of the period due, it is still late.

    9. Every student must complete their own lab report unless otherwise instructed. Labs are due at thebeginningof the period that they are due, not the end. Any late labs will be given a mark of zero.

    10. Quizzes may or may not be announced ahead of time. Tests will be announced one week inadvance.

    11. Cheaters will be turned to the Principal. Please review the cheating policy in your handbook.

Some Discipline procedures1. Removing a Student from the Classroom

If a teacher sends a student from his or her classroom to the Assistant Principals Office, thisstudent is automatically placed on in-school suspension. This student must remain with theAssistant Principal until the end of the period. At the end of the period, the teacher must see theAssistant Principal. Together, the teacher and the Assistant Principal will decide if the student isready to return to class and develop a plan for resolving the issue at hand.

Teachers have a right to send a student to the Assistant Principals Office. However, this optionshould only be used after the teacher has exhausted all forms of managing the behavior in theclassroom. The Assistant Principals Office should be reserved for the most serious offenses.

    2. Missed Test Policy

When a student misses a test for any reason, they will take the make-up test their first day back toschool in after school detention. The teacher should provide the appropriate Assistant Principal

with the test and instructions on how long the student has to complete it. The Assistant Principalwill ensure that the teacher on detention duty for that day administers the test.

    3. Hall Passes

Teachers are expected to write in the handbook each time a student leaves the classroom.Students are only permitted to leave the classroom with a signed handbook. Teachers shouldregularly ask students in the hallway for their signed handbooks. If a student is on a free period, the teacher should follow-up with the students schedule to ensure the consistency of thisprocedure.

First period teachers are responsible for making sure students are in proper uniform attire.Students that are out of uniform should be sent to the appropriate Assistant Principal so thestudent can purchase a uniform or call home and have a uniform sent to school.

Extra Help: I am willing to give you extra help. I will be available most days before school, at recess, atlunch, or after school. Please set up a time with me.

Laboratory responsibilities1. Be aware of the reagents (chemicals) you are using and use them ONLY in an approved

experiment.2. Use proper technique with lab materials.3. Dispose of reagents in the proper ethical manner.4. Clean your lab bench thoroughly before leaving the classroom.5. Wash your hands after experiments.6. Prevent ingestion of reagents by refraining from eating or drinking during lab experiment time.7. Ensure the safety of yourself and others in the lab.

General classroom responsibilities1. Treat class members with respect in both words and actions.

    2. Use appropriate language in the classroom.3. Return all borrowed items to their place.4. Ask permission to leave the room.5. Wait until dismissed to leave class

ACADEMIC HONESTYStudent Handbook 2011-2012: Coursework submitted by a student must be the students own, originalwork. Students shall not cheat on any assignmentby giving or receiving unauthorized assistance,or commit the act ofplagiarism. Students who commit such acts are subject to receiving a grade of zero(0) on the assignment in question as well as disciplinary action.

HOMEWORKYou will have homework every day and on weekends. Some assignments will be turned in paper

form and others will be submitted online through turnitin.com website. Do not lose your login andpassword. Always show your work, circle final answers with correct significant figures and units, andinclude enough labeled information from the question so the answer is not ambiguous and the solutionprocess can be followed by anyone. Always remember to differentiate between the given information, what you have to know or look up, and your solution process (what you have to calculate).

    SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS:

UNIT TESTS:1. There is a unit test at the end of each unit. To receive full credit on the open-ended questions, all workmust be shown. No credit will be given for numerical answers without work; Up to 5 points can bededucted for lack of units and significant figures.

    2. Study and prepare well for each test. Ask for help when you need it and come to tutoring after school.Get a study partner from class and make sure that you are both dedicated and have a common goal toexcel in the class. Be an independent learner by reading extra material and working on extra problems tosharpen your skills. Stay on top of your work and complete all assignments. Read or browse your notesdaily even if it is not an assigned task.

LAB REPORTS1. Chemistry is a laboratory course. You will have 4 labs per quarter. You will know during lab whether youhave to turn in a FORMAL (assessment grade) or INFORMAL (practice grade) lab report.

    2. To make up a lab, the absence needs to be an excused absence. Then, it needs to be made up the nextclass following the missed lab day.
