a better wayOverview
Storage, today, is essential in helping enterprises
around the world—of every size and type—achieve
their business goals. Managing this storage within a
framework of legal requirements, usage and availability
needs, and operational-cost realities can be daunting.
One key to turning this growing management challenge
into a source of competitive advantage is the employment
of an end-to-end storage management strategy that
leverages the strength and breadth of one of the indus-
try’s most comprehensive storage management and
virtualization portfolios available: the IBM® TotalStorage®
Open Software Family.
The storage challenge
Storage is a top priority for every business—mission-
critical and challenging to manage. What makes it
challenging? Growth in storage demand due to digital
content, e-mail, Internet-based applications and emerg-
ing technology. Complexity of storage networks with
devices from different manufacturers resulting in separate
islands of storage. Pressure to retain data for compliance
with regulations worldwide. Threats to business continu-
ity posed by disaster—even human error, a cause of 40
percent of outages.1
If dealing with storage management strains your bud-
get, you’re not alone. Storage for a typical Fortune 500
company grew from 7 TB in 1996 to 48 TB in 2002, while
storage-related expenditures rose from 11 percent of a
CIO’s budget in 1996 to 17 percent in 2002.2
A better way, available today
What if you could address your storage challenge by
getting more out of your existing storage infrastructure
investment? It’s a different approach than just adding
more capacity, which can add to the challenge.
Picture it: Business continuity even during reconfigurations.
Virtual elimination of backup windows. Recoverability if
disaster occurs. Flexibility to choose products from dif-
ferent manufacturers. A single point of management over
your entire storage network, using your storage and data
resources to their full potential. Excellent productivity of
storage administrators and the potential to reduce errors.
Movement of data across storage devices for optimum
performance with little or no impact to applications. And
movement of data that you need over the long term to
lower-cost devices, while accessing and sharing the
data you need every day.
Can you see it? What you’re envisioning is what we call
an on demand storage environment.
a better wayHelping you build an on demand storage environment:
IBM TotalStorage Open Software Family
An on demand storage environment will ultimately help
to support the goals of your business. And that’s what
the capabilities of the IBM TotalStorage Open Software
Family are designed to help you achieve. Open Software
Family capabilities can be used alone or integrated
together based on your specific business needs as your
storage environment evolves. Each of these capabilities
is designed to help you:
• Enhance personnel productivity so that you can spend
less time managing storage and more time creating
new opportunities
• Optimize storage resource utilization so that you can
become responsive to new business needs at a low cost
• Improve application availability so that you have fewer
application outages, including the ability to introduce
these capabilities to your storage environment with
minimal or no impact to data availability
Open Software Family capabilities include storage
infrastructure management, hierarchical storage
man-agement (HSM), archive and recovery management,
and storage virtualization. You can complement Open
Software Family products with IBM TotalStorage hardware,
planned for future inclusion in storage orchestration
capabilities from IBM Tivoli® software, and education
and financing services for a complete storage solution
from IBM.
Storage infrastructure management
Storage infrastructure management is designed to make
resource sharing possible across the enterprise, including
heterogeneous networks. It helps empower administrators
by providing an integrated view of the entire storage envi-
ronment including software and hardware.
Storage infrastructure management provides insight into
the historic, operational and predictive analytics of the
storage environment that, in turn, can help administrators
improve storage capacity and network utilization, and help
avoid business outages. It also supports policy-based
automation, such as capacity provisioning, performance
optimization and data management, helping to provide
outstanding business agility.
Storage infrastructure management of the Open Software
Family can be enhanced through virtualization, a capabil-
ity that pools and shares enterprise-wide storage assets
to help you optimize utilization and performance, and
improve availability.
software capabilitiesMany of the storage infrastructure management prod-
ucts of the Open Software Family use a common open-
standards interface for management based on the
Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) Storage
Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S). This gives
you the flexibility to interoperate with products from many
different providers, without having to change the way you
manage your environment.
Hierarchical storage management
Open Software Family HSM capabilities provide a way
to capture low-activity or inactive data and feed it into a
hierarchy of lower-cost or tiered storage. This helps you
control your data storage growth and costs. Automated,
policy-based capabilities determine where data should
be stored, based on factors such as how critical it is to
your business, how accessible and available you want it to
be, and the cost structures of available devices. Support
for a broad range of platforms, spanning from mainframes
to open distributed systems, offers you flexibility in choice
and investment protection. And interoperability with IBM
Content and Records Management products allows
enterprise data to be moved from one medium to another
with efficiency while helping avoid disruptions in service.
Archive management
Manage the cost of capturing point-in-time copies of
important data for regulatory or bookkeeping require-
ments with archive management capabilities of the
Open Software Family. Archive, retain and manage data,
including e-mail. Archive management also provides
HSM capabilities. Archive management productsare
interoperable with many content management products
available in the marketplace, including the IBM DB2®
Content Management family. And they support a wide
variety of storage media, write one read many (WORM)
tape and magnetic disks.
The IBM TotalStorage Data Retention 450 is designed
as a preconfigured, integrated solution to help store,
retrieve, manage, share and secure regulated and
nonregulated data. It uses IBM Tivoli Storage Manager
for Data Retention for management and enforcement
of data-retention policies. The solution’s policy-based
archive data-retention3 capabilities are designed to
support nonerasable, nonrewritable data storage. Using
an established archive application programming inter-
face (API), it helps address the needs of regulated
industries and other businesses with long-term data-
retention and protection needs.
software capabilitiesRecovery management
These automated tools are designed to help your enter-
prise recover data when and where you need it. They help
you to create and track reliable recovery points of your
most critical enterprise data, based on preset policies.
Through centralized, Web-based management, recov-
ery management capabilities provide intelligent backup
and archiving to help avoid impact on application
availability. They are designed to match the value of pro-
tected data and applications to the most cost-effective
media—whether tape or disk storage. Scalable recovery
management products of the Open Software Family are
designed to help you address a wide range of service
level agreements (SLAs) using the appropriate cost
structure. Automated policy-based data-movement and
intelligent storage techniques are designed to help free up
administrators to work on higher-value tasks and projects.
Storage virtualization
Storage virtualization software is designed to improve
the flexibility and utilization of your storage. Virtualization
works by pooling your storage volumes, files and file
systems into a single reservoir of capacity for centralized
management. This reservoir can include storage capacity
from multiple vendors and platforms in heterogeneous
environments. Virtualization is also designed to reduce
the effects of reconfigurations at the hardware level, to
help support business continuity.
Storage orchestration
Storage orchestration is being designed to help automate
the management of storage environments to meet service
levels or other business policies. Beginning with policy-
based, automated work flows, storage orchestration is
planned to include optional real-time monitoring and intel-
ligence designed to enable autonomic management of
the on demand storage environment. This is intended to
automate complex and error-prone tasks to help reduce or
eliminate human error and associated application outages.
Open Software Family— the power of choice
With the IBM TotalStorage Open Software Family, you
can choose from one of the broadest portfolios of storage
infrastructure management and virtualization capabilities
in the industry. And the Open Software Family lets you
choose hardware and software from a wide range of ven-
dors for your infrastructure, IBM or not. That’s because
our products are modular, integrated and interoperable
with many other vendor products based on open industry-
supported standards.
