Definition – Data De-duplication

In storage technology, de-duplication essentially refers to the elimination of redundant data.

However, indexing of all data is still retained should that data ever be required.

De-duplication is able to reduce the required storage capacity since only the unique data is stored.

Key Misunderstandings

Significant factoring is on “subsequent” backups.

Wide variability in de-dupe ratios exists – factors such

as:

Data profile

Retention periods

Data change rates

Additional compressibility of factored data

...........

Analysis and modelling of benefits for a customer’s

specific backup workload is key to the successful

implementation of deduplication technologies.

Page 6: IBM ProtecTIER Overview and Roadmap - i-Community · 2015-11-30 · IBM ProtecTIER Overview and Roadmap. Primus Solutions Typical Backup Challenges 0% 10% 20% 30% 40% 50% 60% 7 0%

De-Dupe Approaches

1. ProtecTIER HyperFactor™ - IBM

Inflight deduplication

Compares new data with previous data that is similar

Does not open the data stream to examine logical content

Requires a computational compare step

2. Hash Based - EMC

Inflight deduplication

Creates a fingerprint (Hash) for a slice of data – 8kb typical

De-duplicates when the same fingerprint is computed on new data

Does not require a computational compare step

3. Post Process – Sepaton/ExaGrid

Writes data backup in full to disk – compression only

Requires a post process comparison of the current full backup with stored data

Compares new data with previous version of same file/object

Once backups are written a further 4 steps are required to achieve deduplication

Page 7: IBM ProtecTIER Overview and Roadmap - i-Community · 2015-11-30 · IBM ProtecTIER Overview and Roadmap. Primus Solutions Typical Backup Challenges 0% 10% 20% 30% 40% 50% 60% 7 0%

Primus Solutions

1. IBM HyperFactor™

4GB can map 1PB of Physical Storage.

Memory access even when scaled to PBytes.

Ratio of Repository to Index: 250,000 : 1

Performance doesn't degrade with size

2. Hash Based

With a 1 TByte repository:

1 TByte repository has ~134,000,000 chunks of 8 KB each

Need pointers scheme to reference inside 1 TByte

Hash table requires ~2.5 GB of memory – no issue

With a 100 TByte repository:

Hash table requires ~250 GBytes of memory – overflow on

disk, performance issues!!!

Factoring ratios for ProtecTIER’s HyperFactor will vary depending on the following:

Data Change Rate – the lower the rate the better the factoring;

Data Retention Period – the longer the retention period the better the factoring;

Use of data compression and or encryption software prior to data being deduplicated will dramatically lessen the factoring ratio

Parsers for applications can make a big difference

Type of data:

Good Candidates

• Databases (backed up non-multiplexed and uncompressed and unencrypted).

• Operating System and Application software packages.

• Text files, Log files (usually dedupe very well).

• Email (PST, DBX, Domino DB, and similar files).

• Snapshots (Filer Snaps, VMWare Images).

Problematic Candidates

• Images, Video (JPEG, GIF, TIF, MPEG, others). Unless Redundant.

• Compressed and Encrypted Files (unless redundant).

• Rendering or seismic data.

• CAD/CAM (depending on the type).

IBM iSeries 10% rate of change has been used to calculate post seeding backup sizes.

25% rate of change has been used to calculate post seeding audit backup sizes.

5% has been added to the initial repository sizing to accommodate 1st year growth.

Single stream throughput for the ProtecTIER environment is around 150-200MB/Sec,

analysis of the BRMS data supplied by the customer shows a number of backup jobs

are currently exceeding this threshold, the most significant of which is BKPPRDLIBS

which runs for 19 hours with a throughput of 206MB/sec.

It is recommended that this job should be broken into multiple streams using the

BRMS “Parallel-parallel saves” function.

Sufficient network bandwidth is available between Cardiff & Swansea for replication

functions.

Media policies - Retention type 1=Date, 2=Days, 3=Versions, 4=Permanent

Where Media Policy is permanent we have assumed 5 year retention.
