2016 IBM Ballarat EXITE CAMP ‘Technology Careers in Rural Australia’

Background In the summer of 1999, IBM initiated a pilot technology camp in the US and other countries staffed by IBM volunteers with technical backgrounds. The goal was simple: spark the interest of high school students so they continue taking the technology classes that will position them for future careers in these fields. One of the pilots was in Ballarat where there was a one day seminar with a number of Ballarat year 9 school girls.

The EX.I.T.E. Camp program has grown tremendously since it was launched in 1999 at IBM and annually there are over 50 camps being held around the world! New York, Moscow, Dublin, Paris, Sydney, Hong Kong, and Ballarat to name a few. Description The IBM EX.I.T.E camp program is a four day camp experience for students who study in Ballarat and surrounding areas. Potential students are nominated by their teachers, careers and pathways advisors. Throughout the four day camp, up to 30 young students learn about technology and engineering from IBM and other external volunteers through fun, hands-on activities. The students will have exposure to the diverse range of career choices in technology and engineering at an IBM workplace and other external providers as well as gaining insight into university life. The IBM EX.I.T.E Camp is proudly supported by Federation University Australia. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Key points of interest Cost: There is no cost associated with EXITE camp Transport: A parent or guardian will be responsible for transportation to and from the

camp pick up location each day. Transport will be provided by IBM for field trips during the camp.

Accommodation: While the IBM EXITE camp runs over 4 days, it is a day camp and the girls go

home at the end of each day’s activities. There is no accommodation provided. The camp is at the beginning of the September school holidays therefore a short family holiday or approaching friends and family in Ballarat is a good solution if accommodation is required.

EXITE Camp proposed activities: Activities to experience technology include Earth Ed robotics program, IBM

Watson Data Analytics and Cognitive Computing, IT in online business with a local business owner, a visit to the IBM Research & Development laboratory in Melbourne, coding/testing activity and other university based hands on activities.

EXITE camp highlights: Fun with technology Build interest in technology careers Careers day with mentors, University students & researchers Unique experience with leading technology professionals What can parents and teachers do? Teachers and parents can join in at afternoon tea and the closing ceremony on

the final day. Teachers, if you would like to be more involved please call the IBM contact listed on page 2.
