QUICK POLL
How do you handle hierarchy management today?
Business Requirements
– Retail Client
Finance/GL System – migrated to Dynamics AX
Frustration with limitations of XLR (DAX reporting tool)
Must distribute Monthly P&L’s (in Excel) broadly
Should leverage existing Data Marts & tools, if possible
Use Finance Mart as future DW foundation
Would like to be able to add Planning in future
Absolute need for fully Self-Service BI
– Reporting & Analysis
– Hierarchy control & maintenance
Specific System Must-have’s
Hierarchy management by the finance group, not IT
– Need for simple graphical UI
Support for alternate hierarchies & ability to add new ones
– Multiple department and account rollups
Automatic (& secure) report distribution to 150 recipients
– Each recipient sees unique sets of departments
– Very rich & complex reports
15 minute data refresh (esp. during close)
High performance ad-hoc analysis and report dev.

Q&A
Dimension Management (“JP’s Laws”)
1. All BI & Planning Systems need additional dimensional
information
COROLLARY: No Source system contains full hierarchy or attribute
detail
2. Today most gets added downstream in Excel (vlookups)
3. Hard-coding additional “richness” in specific cubes or
reports is possible, but not wise
4. SQL and database tables in the DW can handle it, but
creates IT-Business friction
5. Using Excel as a data source for roll-ups is very fragile/risky
6. Data stewardship is critical, but rarely appreciated initially

A Few Classic Examples
Company reorgs
Multiple product hierarchies
Finance version vs. Marketing version
Sales territory realignment
Management hierarchies vs. geographic territories
Pre- and post- acquisition rollups
Multiple division or subsidiary (plus corporate) rollup
disparities
External supplier and 3rd-party data hierarchies vs. internal
Temporary groupings (promos, tiger teams, etc.)

BUT, The Challenge…
IT typically “owns” the database layer, yet
Business “owns” the dimensional information
