Transcript of IBM BladeCenter and VMware: End-to-end virtualization ... · that IBM® BladeCenter® technology...
Today’s forward-thinking organizations are deploying new technologies to help their businesses
innovate and thrive. Many companies are leveraging the resiliency, flexibility, and energy efficiency
that IBM® BladeCenter® technology delivers, with redundant I/O connections on every blade in
every chassis, abundant processor cores, and sizeable memory capacity. To save on hardware and
energy costs, they’re implementing VMware® server virtualization to optimize their IT infrastructure.
Virtualization benefits your data center and your company’s business. You amplify the value of your
server and storage hardware, maximizing the return on your data center investment while
speeding responsiveness to the computing needs of your business units.
IBM and VMware make the transition to virtualization easy to achieve and manage with a powerful, end-to-end
virtualization solution: IBM BladeCenter HS22 blade server with VMware plus IBM System Storage™
DS5020 Express.

SIMPLIFY AND INTEGrATE WITH IBM BLADECENTEr
As organizations rethink their x86 server strategies, many turn
to the innovative, flexible BladeCenter in order to address the
complexity of sprawling racks and overheated server rooms.
Maybe you’re already simplifying your Linux®, or Microsoft®
Windows® rack and tower systems with BladeCenter, or
you’re carefully considering the benefits, such as using less
floor space and reducing your power consumption without
sacrificing performance.
Virtualization with VMware vSphere™ on BladeCenter utilizes
servers more fully while speeding the deployment of new
services. When virtualizing and consolidating multiple
applications to a single server, you need a platform that’s
reliable, available, and serviceable. You need a platform for
your applications that delivers the required performance and
business continuity within a virtualized environment to run your
business successfully. IBM BladeCenter with the BladeCenter
HS22 is a platform you can rely on to meet these needs.
The IBM BladeCenter HS22 server provides:
Outstanding performance with support for the latest •
Intel® Xeon® processors
Support for High-speed I/O•
High memory capacity and fast memory throughput•
Exceptional I/O bandwidth•
No single point of failure for high reliability and availability•
Outstanding power efficiency so that energy costs do •
not get out of control
The HS22 can run applications up to twice as fast as previous
generation blades. It is supported in all five BladeCenter
chassis, including the BladeCenter E for improved energy
management, and the BladeCenter S for office and distributed
enterprise environments.
The HS22 was designed with virtualization in mind. It offers
flexible I/O options, including Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel,
FCoE, SAS, iSCSI and InfiniBand®. With expanded memory and
support for the embedded VMware ESXi hypervisor, the HS22
blade is ideal for virtualization. In fact, BladeCenter is the only
blade platform with two I/O connections from every blade
in every chassis. reliable I/O and maximum I/O bandwidth
is critical for an effective virtualization solution. This resilient
design provides an added level of protection when running
numerous virtual machines on a single blade server.

VMware vSphere is the industry’s first cloud operating
system, transforming IT infrastructures into a private cloud
delivering IT infrastructure as a service. With vSphere on IBM
BladeCenter, you can enable the next generation of flexible,
reliable IT services with the efficiency and low cost of cloud
computing—featuring control over service levels.
VMware ESX or ESXi hypervisor software virtualizes your
physical servers so that multiple applications—each with its

operating system—run independently in virtual machines
while sharing physical resources. VMware vSphere software
works in conjunction with ESX or ESXi to provide a complete
virtual infrastructure environment that supports even your most
critical workloads.
VMware vCenter™ delivers centralized management and
automation, and provides a built-in, guided consolidation tool
to easily convert existing physical systems into virtual machines.
VMware VMotion™ enables live migration of virtual machines
without application interruption and can be configured to
dynamically migrate VMs based on performance requirements.
VMware High Availability feature provides automatic restarting
of VM’s in the case of server failure. Fault Tolerance runs mission-
critical workloads on VM’s on two physical servers in lock-step,
eliminating down-time in the event of a server failure. Other
vSphere features include Distributed Power Management for
automatic powering down and up of servers to save energy,
and Thin Provisioning to reduce the amount of storage needed
for virtual machines.
The BladeCenter HS22 supports an optional USB key with
VMware ESXi preloaded for customers wanting a thin hypervisor
embedded on the server. This option provides simplicity and
allows you to virtualize in minutes. It operates in a diskless
configuration and uses a smaller memory footprint. You
immediately simplify your IT infrastructure and drive down
the total cost of ownership with a highly efficient and
available platform.
With VMware and IBM BladeCenter, you can consolidate servers
to save costs, while improving IT efficiency and service delivery.
This enables you to multiply the benefits you already get with
BladeCenter: energy savings for power and cooling, floor-space
savings, and outstanding manageability.

IBM Systems Director 6.1 is an easy-to-use, point-and-click
management solution that streamlines the way physical and
virtual systems are managed together. Leveraging industry
standards, IBM Systems Director supports multiple operating
systems and virtualization technologies across IBM and non-
IBM platforms. Through a single graphical user interface, IBM
Systems Director provides consistent views for visualizing
managed systems, monitors health and usage information,
maintains firmware currency and helps automate IT operations.
IBM Systems Director integrates with VMware vCenter to
permit select vSphere functions to be accessed from IBM
Systems Director. This enables customers to use the same
console for physical and virtual management. It also can
be used to automate operations; for example, virtual server
evacuation can be initiated by defining a System Director
event actions plans which calls VMotion in response to physical
server thresholds or alerts.
IBM Systems Director 6.1 is provided at no additional charge for
use on IBM blade servers. IBM Systems Director functionality
can be extended with plug-ins—such as IBM Systems Director
Active Energy Manager, BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager
and Service and Support Manager—to provide additional
capabilities from a consistent, single point of management.
(Some plug-ins require a license available at additional charge).
