Mr Monaghan - who is know around the world as Hobbit Merry who travelled alongside Frodo Bag- gins and Pippin Took to Mordor in Peter Jackon’s Lord of the Ring tril- ogy - stayed in Katherine for four nights shooting for his new TV series Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan. He was spotted filming in and around Katherine, Pine Creek, Ade- laide River and Darwin. The famous Hobbit caught up with Katherine reptile catcher David Reed from Reedy’s Reptiles and got up close and personal with Kather- ine’s wildlife. Late last week Mr Monaghan flew to Cairns to continue filming for his show. Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan is set to be screened on ABC 2 early next year - showcasing Katherine’s wildlife. The annual Brolga awards are the highest tourism accolades in the re- gion and Ibis front office reservation manager Lisa Dawes said the Brolga recognition for the Ibis Hotel would be “great for the Katherine region” “Competing against Darwin and the Alice Springs, Katherine now has the best standard accommodation in the Northern Territory,” Ms Dawes said. But not only the hotel was recog- nised at the 27th Brolga Tourism Awards. Ms Dawes also took home a Brolga, winning the George Dunne Award for Outstanding Contribution by an Individual. This award recognises the extraor- dinary personal and professional achievement and contribution by any individual over many years to the Northern Territory tourism industry. Ms Dawes, who has lived and worked in the Northern Territory for over 22 years, has called Katherine home for the past 20 years and puts all her passion towards the Ibis Styles hotel, having worked at every role - from room attendant to relieving Gen- eral Manager. Ms Dawes said that Katherine’s strong showing in the Brolga awards will mean extra business for the whole town. “Tourists will stay with us and spend their money in town,” Ms Dawes said. The Ibis Styles will now represent Northern Territory in the Qantas Aus- tralian Tourism Awards held in Syd- ney on February 7. Industry Development Officer for Tourism NT, Susan Web, said that through her hospitality work, charity initiatives, sporting bodies, and vol- unteer work, Ms Dawes would em- body the strength and character of a true Territorian and had been the strongest candidate for the George Dunne Award.
