Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the WhiteHouse and to this day to which Hilary and the vice president and Ilook forward so much every year.

This is always an important day for our country , for the reasons thatthe vice president said. It is an unusual and, I think, unusuallyimportant day today. I may not be quite as easy with my words todayas I have been in years past, and I was up rather late last nightthinking about and praying about what I ought to say today. And rather unusual for me, I actually tried to write it down. o if you will forgiveme, I will do my best to say what it is I want to say to you ! and I mayhave to take my glasses out to read my own writing.

"irst, I want to say to all of you that, as you might imagine, I have

been on quite a #ourney these last few weeks to get to the end of this,to the rock bottom truth of where I am and where we all are.

I agree with those who have said that in my first statement after Itestified I was not contrite enough. I don$t think there is a fancy way tosay that I have sinned.

It is important to me that everybody who has been hurt know that thesorrow I feel is genuine% first and most important, my family& also my

friends, my staff, my 'abinet, (onica )ewinsky and her family, andthe American people. I have asked all for their forgiveness.

*ut I believe that to be forgiven, more than sorrow is required ! atleast two more things. "irst, genuine repentance ! a determination tochange and to repair breaches of my own making. I have repented.

econd, what my bible calls a $$broken spirit$$& an understanding that Imust have +od$s help to be the person that I want to be& a willingnessto give the very forgiveness I seek& a renunciation of the pride and theanger which cloud #udgment, lead people to e cuse and compare andto blame and complain.

-ow, what does all this mean for me and for us "irst, I will instructmy lawyers to mount a vigorous defense, using all availableappropriate arguments. *ut legal language must not obscure the factthat I have done wrong. econd, I will continue on the path ofrepentance, seeking pastoral support and that of other caring peopleso that they can hold me accountable for my own commitment.

Third, I will intensify my efforts to lead our country and the worldtoward peace and freedom, prosperity and harmony, in the hope thatwith a broken spirit and a still strong heart I can be used for greatergood, for we have many blessings and many challenges and so much

*y referring to his poor vision, 'lintonstresses his weakness or imperfectionwhich helps him to put himself in position

as equal as ordinary American citi3en andmakes himself as the average Americanman. *y showing that he is very honest andas ordinary as the public, he builds upcredibility as he encourages audiences tobelieve him and listen to his sincereapology, thus ethos is established.

0n the other hand, this also allowsaudiences to sympathi3e and empathi3ewith 'linton, creating a strong emotionalbond between 'linton and themselves. Assuch an emotional bond is formed, audiences will be consider more about'linton4s situation and thus be persuadedmore easily.

/TH0 % In his previous speech, 'linton tried to protect his family as much as possible that he seemed like he considers his wife and hisdaughter as his possession. However I this speech, 'linton intentionally addressed 5Hilary4 to show how he cares about Hilary4s effort andemotion, and how he considers Hilary as someone very influential, someone that the America knows and not #ust the title of his wife. *yreferring to his wife, the person who is supposed to decide whether *ill 'linton should be forgiven, 'linton uses ethos which indirectlyconveys that his honesty and sincere apology is credible that even Hilary has forgave him.

    work to do.

In this, I ask for your prayers and for your help in healing our nation.

And though I cannot move beyond or forget this ! indeed, I mustalways keep it as a caution light in my life ! it is very important that our nation move forward.

I am very grateful for the many, many people ! clergy and ordinaryciti3ens alike ! who have written me with wise counsel. I amprofoundly grateful for the support of so many Americans whosomehow through it all seem to still know that I care about them agreat deal, that I care about their problems and their dreams. I amgrateful for those who have stood by me and who say that in this caseand many others, the bounds of privacy have been e cessively and

unwisely invaded. That may be. -evertheless, in this case, it may bea blessing, because I still sinned. And if my repentance is genuineand sustained, and if I can maintain both a broken spirit and a strongheart, then good can come of this for our country as well as for meand my family. 6Applause7

The children of this country can learn in a profound way that integrityis important and selfishness is wrong, but +od can change us andmake us strong at the broken places . I want to embody those lessonsfor the children of this country ! for that little boy in "lorida who cameup to me and said that he wanted to grow up and be 2resident and tobe #ust like me. I want the parents of all the children in America to beable to say that to their children.

A couple of days ago when I was in "lorida a :ewish friend of minegave me this liturgy book called $$+ates of ;epentance.$$ And therewas this incredible passage from the

at the beginning, and turn us toward each other, )ord, for in isolationthere is no life.$$

I thank my friend for that. I thank you for being here. I ask you toshare my prayer that +od will search me and know my heart, try meand know my an ious thoughts, see if there is any hurtfulness in me,and lead me toward the life everlasting. I ask that +od give me aclean heart, let me walk by faith and not sight.

I ask once again to be able to love my neighbor ! all my neighbors ! asmy self, to be an instrument of +od$s peace& to let the words of mymouth and the meditations of my heart and, in the end, the work of myhands, be pleasing. This is what I wanted to say to you today.

    Thank you. +od bless you.

In the Prayer Breakfast Speech Clinton starts of thanking everyonefor coming. He says show much Hilary, the vice president, andhimself look forward to this breakfast every year. In the previousspeech he says his wife and his daughter as if he has possessionover them which goes along with the true purpose of telling everyoneto stay out of his business. In the Prayer Breakfast Speech he usesHilary s name to make her out to be a real person that he caresabout, the person that !merica knows and not "ust the title of his wife.In this speech there is also a lot of repetition starting from the second

paragraph on. He uses the words unusual, grateful, beginning to turn, etc, over and over again to prove his point #parallel structure$. !t one

point in this speech he says that he is sorry. He even admits to hiswrongdoing.

%his speech is much more effective than Clinton s original address to

Again 'linton uses Asyndeton, lack ofcon#unctions, to convey how sorrowful, remorseful and an ious he is, and howdesperate he is to be forgiven by god as wellas American citi3en. He constantly refershimself to religious man by saying 9I ask that+od will give me a clean heart8 to furtherappeal to the clergy as well as 'hristianaudiences.

were real problems to solve. In the second speech Clinton admits tofeeling sorrow and talks about how he looks to repair himself and hisfamily life. He comes across as a typical !merican. He s a man who smade a mistake and looks to restore his life through the help of thoseclose to him and the love of &od. He can t help #probably out of pride$to make a few comments of others wrongdoings. '(irst, I will instructmy lawyers to mount a vigorous defense, using all available andappropriate arguments' '...the bounds of privacy have beene)cessively and unwisely invaded.' (or the most part he comesacross as a broken man trying to heal past wounds and thisovershadows those other comments. His reference to the boy in(lorida and the passage from *om +ippur appeal to people ssensitivity for children and religion respectively. He draws applauseand ends on the simple note of '%hank you. &od Bless you.' It isgenuine and all that is necessary.

%he repetition of words such as grateful, forgiveness, genuine, truth, and broken spirit makes the audience console with him andunderstand where he is coming from. He does this by asking for andeventually obtaining their forgiveness, displaying his thankfulness, and e)plaining how he plans to change and move on to new things. He commonly refers to religion and comes off as a genuine personand a religions man who has sinned.

%his was a great e)ample of how President Clinton ties many ideasinto the same sentence with the lack of con"unctions between his

    coordinate phrases.

In his speech, he uses allusion to the Bible. He does this as not only a pathos appeal, but the Bible is used as a representation of theforgiveness of sins. Clinton asks for the forgiveness of the citi ens ofthe -nited States and he says that without forgiveness it would not be

possible to move on. !llusion in this speech helps the audience relateto what he is saying and better grasp the concept of what he is asking of them.

)adies and gentlemen, I$d planned to speak to you tonight to report onthe state of the ?nion, but the events of earlier today have led me tochange those plans. Today is a day for mourning and remembering.

-ancy and I are pained to the core by the tragedy of the shuttle'hallenger. We know we share this pain with all of the people of ourcountry. This is truly a national loss.

-ineteen years ago, almost to the day, we lost three astronauts in aterrible accident on the ground. *ut we$ve never lost an astronaut inflight& we$ve never had a tragedy like this. And perhaps we$veforgotten the courage it took for the crew of the shuttle& but they, the'hallenger even, were aware of the dangers, but overcame themand did their #obs brilliantly. We mourn seven heroes% (ichael mith,

ick cobee, :udith ;esnik, ;onald (c-air, /llison 0ni3uka, +regory:arvis, and 'hrista (cAuliffe. We mourn their loss as a nationtogether.

"or the families of the seven, we cannot bear, as you do, the fullimpact of this tragedy. *ut we feel the loss, and we$re thinking aboutyou so very much. +ive me achallenge and I$ll meet it with #oy.> They had a hunger to e plore theuniverse and discover its truths. They wished to serve, and they did. They served all of us.

We$ve grown used to wonders in this century. It$s hard to da33le us.*ut for GJ years the ?nited tates space program has been doing #ustthat. We$ve grown used to the idea of space, and perhaps we forget

that we$ve only #ust begun. We$re still pioneers. They, the members ofthe 'hallenger crew, were pioneers.

    /TH0

He not only mentions himself, but also hiswife -ancy to bring the speech on a morepersonal basis. He stresses that he is feelinge tremely sorrowful and painful at thistragedy, making himself sound credible and

And I want to say something to the schoolchildren of America whowere watching the live coverage of the shuttle$s takeoff. I know it ishard to understand, but sometimes painful things like this happen. It$s

all part of the process of e ploration and discovery. It$s all part oftaking a chance and e panding man$s hori3ons. The future doesn$tbelong to the fainthearted& it belongs to the brave. The 'hallengercrew was pulling us into the future, and we$ll continue to follow them.

I$ve always had great faith in and respect for our space program, andwhat happened today does nothing to diminish it. We don$t hide ourspace program. We don$t keep secrets and cover things up. We do itall up front and in public. That$s the way freedom is, and we wouldn$tchange it for a minute.

We$ll continue our quest in space. There will be more shuttle flightsand more shuttle crews and, yes, more volunteers, more civilians, more teachers in space. -othing ends here& our hopes and our

    #ourneys continue.

I want to add that I wish I could talk to every man and woman whoworks for -A A or who worked on this mission and tell them% >

There$s a coincidence today. 0n this day C years ago, the greate plorer ir "rancis rake died aboard ship off the coast of 2anama.In his lifetime the great frontiers were the oceans, and an historianlater said, >He lived by the sea, died on it, and was buried in it.> Well, today we can say of the 'hallenger crew% Their dedication was, like

    rake$s, complete.

The crew of the space shuttle 'hallenger honored us by the mannerin which they lived their lives. We will never forget them, nor the lasttime we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for their #ourneyand waved goodbye and >slipped the surly bonds of earth> to >touchthe face of +od.>
