•development of alternative means to attain each

goal;

•estimation of the cost of each alternative and

•selection of the most promising alternative (s)

Explanation: A primary pollutant is an air

pollutant emitted directly from a source.

A secondary pollutant is not directly emitted as

such, but forms when other pollutants

(primary pollutants) react in the atmosphere.

Examples of a secondary pollutant include

ozone, which is formed when hydrocarbons (HC)

and nitrogen oxides (NOx) combine in the

presence of sunlight; NO2, which is formed as

NO

combines with oxygen in the air; and acid rain,

which is formed when sulfur dioxide or

nitrogen oxides react with water.

driving. Convex mirrors are preferred because

they always give an erect, though diminished,

other Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or

Punishment’ through Legislation’ was released on

October 30, putting renewed pressure on the

direction through the passage of the Prevention of

constitutional protections under Article 21 (right to

life and liberty) and Article 20 (3) (right against self-

incrimination).

iii) Ratification of the Convention requires enabling

legislation having provisions that would be

necessary to give effect to the Articles of the

Convention. Although some provisions exist in the

Indian Penal Code, they neither define “torture” as

clearly as in Article 1 of the Convention nor make it

43. Answer: d

Explanation: Peaty and Marshy soils:

These types of soils are found in Kerala, coastal

track of Orissa, Sunderban area of W.B. When the

vegetation growing in such wet places dies, it

decomposes very slowly dues to excessive wetness

of soils and after several hundreds of year a layer

of partly decayed organic matter accumulates on

the surface, giving rise to such peaty and marshy

soils. These are black coloured, heavy and highly

acidic soils. When properly drained and fertilized,

these soils produce good crops of rice.

Explanation: i) The project, Securing Livelihoods,

Conservation, Sustainable Use and Restoration of

High Range Himalayan Ecosystems project (SECURE

Himalaya), was launched by Minister of

Environment, Forest, and Climate Change of the

Government of India and the United Nations

Development Programme (UNDP).

ii) It is part of the GWP, a seven-year program

funded by the GEF and led by the World Bank,

which was developed as a response to the growing

crisis of illegal trafficking in wildlife.

iii) SECURE Himalaya received a GEF grant of $11.5

million, and will receive over $60 million in co-

financing from the Indian government. It is being

implemented by the Government of India in

partnership with UNDP to sustain critical

ecosystem services and to conserve vulnerable

snow leopards by securing community livelihoods,

enhancing enforcement, strengthening community

institutions, and improving knowledge, advocacy

and information systems for promoting landscape-

based conservation approaches.

45. Answer: a

Explanation: i) Permaculture emphasises

traditional and new practices in which all the input

is produced by the farm itself, resulting in food

self-sufficiency. It originated as a design science for

small-scale farmers to create quantity produce,

ease their work and also to address environmental

degradation.

ii) Agroforestry is as an intensive land

management system that optimizes the benefits

from the biological interactions created when trees

and/or shrubs are deliberately combined with

crops and/or livestock.

iii) Aquaponics is a form of agriculture that

combines raising fish in tanks (recirculating

aquaculture) with soilless plant culture

(hydroponics). In aquaponics, the nutrient-rich

water from raising fish provides a natural fertilizer

for the plants and the plants help to purify the

water for the fish.

iv) Organic farming is a system which avoids or

largely excludes the use of synthetic inputs (such as

fertilisers, pesticides, hormones, feed, etc.) and to

the maximum extent feasible relies upon crop

rotations, crop residues, animal manures, off-farm

organic waste, mineral grade rock additives and

biological system of nutrient mobilisation and plant

protection.

Explanation:

Index has been monitoring the various efforts

being made to combat climate change, issued by

Germanwatch, the NewClimate Institute, and the

Climate Action Network.

ii) The report ranks 56 countries and the European

Union, which together are responsible for 90% of

global greenhouse gas emissions. Countries are

ranked across four categories — Greenhouse Gas

Emissions, Renewable Energy, Energy Use, and

Climate Policy.

and there are also two in March in most time

zones. This is sometimes called a double Blue

in full eclipse. While it has no special astronomical

significance, the view in the sky is striking as the

usually whiteish moon becomes red or ruddy-

Explanation: Under the Muslim Law (Shariat), the

father enjoys a dominant position. It also makes a

distinction between guardianship and custody. For

guardianship, which has usually reference to

guardianship of property, according to Sunnis, the

father is preferred and in his absence his executor.

If no executor has been appointed by the father,

the guardianship passes on the paternal

grandfather to take over responsibility and not that

of the executor. Both schools, however, agree that

father while alive is the sole guardian. Mother is

not recognised as a natural guardian even after the

death of the father. As regards rights of a natural

guardian, there is no doubt that father’s right

extends both to the property and person of the

child. Even when mother has the custody of minor

child father’s general right of supervision and

control remains. Father can, however, appoint

mother as testamentary guardian. Thus, though

mother may not be recognised as natural guardian,

there is no objection to her being appointed under

the father’s will.

Open prisons have relatively less stringent rules as

compared to the controlled jails. They go by many

names like minimum-security prison, open air

camps or prison without bars. The fundamental

rule of an open prison is that the jail has minimum

security and functions on the self-discipline of the

the Rajasthan Prisoners Rules and Andhra Pradesh

Prison Rules, 1979. Seventeen states are reported

By applying insights from psychological research,

he helped the world better understand people’s

economic decision-making in particular. People

tend to be loss averse: they’d rather expect a

smaller payoff with the same risk, but cap their

losses. Another contribution of Thaler was the

concept of mental accounting: people don’t, it

when making financial decisions. Instead they focus

on the performance of individual decisions and are

less concerned with making savings if they are a

small percentage of what’s being spent.

Explanation: In a major move, the Reserve Bank of

India (RBI) has decided not to pursue a proposal for

What is Islamic banking?

Islamic banking or Islamic finance or sharia-

compliant finance is banking or financing activity

that complies with sharia (Islamic law) and its

practical application through the development of

Islamic economics. Some of the modes of Islamic

banking/finance include Mudarabah (Profit and

Sharia prohibits riba, or usury, defined as interest

dispute whether there is a consensus that interest

is equivalent to riba). Investment in businesses that

provide goods or services considered contrary to

Islamic principles (e.g. pork or alcohol) is also
