Ca ndidates: IAPS Board

Election StatementsTONY CRAIG (UK)

I am a researcher in the social, economic and geographical sciences research group at the James Hutton Institute in Aberdeen. I previously spent around 8 years working at the school of architecture and the built environment (during which time, I ran the 3rd EPUK conference), researching among other things sustainable wastewater systems, perceptions of building facades, and methods for public participation in urban planning. Since I have been working as a researcher in the James Hutton Institute, my focus has been on using various methods from the social science toolkit (and enhancing this toolkit where possible with other data collection and analytical techniques) to better understand pro-environmental behaviour. I am currently involved in a large research programme looking at aspects of food culture and diet choices using agent based models. I have also been involved in a number of EU projects, including GILDED, LOCAW, and (currently) GLAMURS. In the last couple of years, my attention has been drawn to the temporal aspect of person-environment relationships, and I am currently carrying out studies looking at time-use and time pressure in relation to pro-environmental behaviour.

During my time on the IAPS board, I have been involved in a number of administrative roles – first as treasurer, and more recently as the person responsible for redeveloping the IAPS website. Although I am pleased with the overall style of the new IAPS website, there is still a significant amount of work to be done to make sure that it meets the needs of the IAPS members – especially in relation to the IAPS networks. The new website currently allows people to specify which of the IAPS networks they are interested in joining at the point of registration (or renewal), but this needs to be better integrated with the networks themselves. I am standing for re-election to the board in the hope that I will be able to continue contributing to the functioning of the association – initially by completing the tasks associated with the website, but also in promoting people-environment studies generally and IAPS in particular. I strongly believe that this is a very important time for IAPS. Conference attendance is high, and from my personal point of view, the sense of having a true academic peer group is certainly very high at IAPS conferences. IAPS is my academic family. It is now more important than ever for IAPS to set itself at the forefront of current thinking in the field of people-environment studies.

NOMINATOR: RICARDO GARCIA MIRATony Craig is an experienced researcher in the field of environmental psychology, who has contributed to the development of people-environment studies both from the scientific and the management area. He has participated in international collaborative consortia with an active role as responsible of relevant workpackage. In the management side, he has long experience working on the board as a key member in its Executive Committee.

SECONDER: GIUSEPPE CARRUSI strongly support Tony Craig nomination, and I hope he can continue his experience as IAPS board member, because I have appreciated his skills, his talent, and his seriousness as a committed board member and as an outstanding researcher in the field of people-environment studies.

NATHALIE JEAN-BAPTISTE (Germany / Tanzania)With great enthusiasm, I am applying for the position of IAPS Board Member 2016. I am keen to contribute more actively to the Board’s activities. My research focuses on vulnerability assessment and climate related risks in low-income countries and the relationship between infrastructure, people and the environment. One stream of research investigates waste and sanitation behaviour through the lens on everyday experiences of solid waste and waste water management in places with infrastructure deficiencies. My current project ACTUS (www.actus.wastestudies.com) aims at expending our understanding on multiple spheres of livelihoods, risk reduction and people’s initiatives that act as a stimulus for sustainable growth. As a member of IAPS for some years, I place a particular focus on people ability to cope with adverse situations and to recover despite disadvantageous socio-economic settings. This implies a new form of normality framed outside traditional city development models. My work therefore addresses human settlement development in all its complexity, which echoes the core objective of IAPS. My contribution is to bring a different set of competence and expertise to the board. I am an architect graduated in Mexico City. I hold a Master of Science and a Doctorate in Urban Studies from the Bauhaus University in Weimar. I worked at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig closely with sociologists, ecologists, economists, lawyers, geographers and political scientists for the last 5 years. I recently joined the Technical University of Darmstadt and Ardhi University in Dar es Salaam within the frame of a Marie Curie Global Fellowship to investigate African Cities in transition. Hence my multidisciplinary and international background relates to the diverse forum of scholars in IAPS. For more details on my research experience please go to the following link: http://www.raumplanung.tu-darmstadt.de/fg_ruip/team_ruip/jean_baptiste/jeanbaptiste_detailseite.en.jsp

More concretely, the areas of expertise I could contribute to the IAPS board are: Knowledge of and experience in urban studies and the interrelations between people and their

built and natural habitat. Expertise in building networks with the industry, stakeholders, government bodies, funding

agencies and maintaining presence of IAPS in international forums Practice in dealing with lack of or limited financial/human resources. This is particularly relevant

when reaching to emerging contexts (e.g. Africa, and Latin America) and exploring opportunities for expanding IAPS

Capacity in dissemination, network and outreach activities (e.g conceptualisation, preparation and participation of international events, conferences, symposiums, workshops).

Fluency in French, Creole, Spanish, English and a good level of German and basic Swahili. These languages are a great tool for communication and making a case for a more prominent presence of IAPS

Finally, I focus on how things work. In the case of IAPS, my motivation lies in making the Association Bolder and Better. I think it is Big enough. I believe my energy and grit can be put to good use within the IAPS board.

NOMINATOR: SIGRUN KABISCH Dr. Nathalie Jean-Baptiste is an active and dynamic researcher who is currently based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania as a holder of the prestigious Marie Curie Global Fellowship. Since she took the role of conveyor of housing network in 2013, she had brought a new momentum in the discussion on housing bringing her expertise in vulnerability assessment and promoting resilience of the

housing sector in time of global environmental change. Her extensive international experience and network (Australia, Germany, Mexico and Tanzania) is just what we need in the board, in a time where we have to deal with complex goals to interact with policymakers, put people-environment studies in the international agendas, and reinforce the research work of many disciplines within IAPS.

SECONDER: ROLPH JOHANSSONDr .Nathalie Jean-Baptisste Succeede Dr Roderick Lawrence and myself as coordinator FOR THE IAPS HOUISNG NETOWRK a few years ago. In this role she has taken many initiatives to develop network activites, including plans for a network symposium in 2017. She is now affiliated to ArdhiUniversitiy in Dares Salaam where she is doing research on a European Union Scholarship. Sub-Saharan Africa is experiencing the world’s fastest urban growth and her contacts in this region has the potential to bring new perspectives to the IAPS community.

LINDA JORDAN (UK)I am an architect living in Manchester and am registered with the Architects Registration Board in the UK. I have worked in an architect's practice for the last eight years working predominantly on education projects including primary and secondary schools and a school for pupils with special educational needs. I have recently worked on a school for pupils with Emotional, Social and Behavioural Disorder to provide a learning environment for pupils with Autistic Spectrum disorder and/or ADHD; and I have also designed a vulnerable children's unit. I have worked on a number of schools built under the Building Schools for the Future programme and have worked on a church/community project.I am from Ireland originally and have a B.Sc.(Hons) in Psychology from University College Dublin after which I gained a Masters in Personnel Management and worked in the field of human resources.Since then I was drawn to the field of architecture and design, and studied to become an architect. I was attracted to the education sector as I have two children of my own, giving me a 'user' perspective and a desire to make a positive impact on the design of schools. My masters dissertation focused on the question: "Can the morphology of schools/learning spaces be extrapolated from theories of child development?" I believe that much can be learned from the field of psychology when designing in the built environment.

I would like to stand for the board because I believe that I am in a unique position having qualifications and experience in the disciplines of psychology and architecture. My participation in the IAPS conference in Glasgow in 2012 had a big effect on me; I appreciated that the development of ideas involves sharing, discussing, and evaluation in small and larger groups with input from professionals from various disciplines. It helped me to understand that architecture, design and the construction industry expands far beyond the walls of architectural studios, and highlighted the significance of the work we do in practice. There is a lot of research available to psychologists and social scientists and it would be helpful to develop these into guidelines to give architects, design teams and clients insight into how these concepts can be applied to their work and thereby strengthen the relationship between architecture and psychology. I can bring an understanding of the architecture profession to the committee and would like to develop the flow of information and look at how summaries of research could be prepared, and establish further mechanisms for the conduit of information and the transfer of knowledge between the disciplines.

NOMINATOR: IAN SIMKINSI met the nominee at the IAPS conference in Glasgow, since when I remained in touch as part of the IAPS CYE network. As the nominee is qualified as an Architect this would bring much needed disciplinary diversity to the board, which has been discussed. The nominee also has a background in psychology and this cross disciplinary position makes the nominee ideal to reflect the multi-disciplinary remit of the IAPS community.

SECONDER: EDWARD EDGERTONI have known the nominee since she attended her first IAPS conference in 2012. The nominee was (and is) extremely enthusiastic about the work of IAPS and in particular its multidisciplinary approach to human-environment interactions. The nominee is a qualified architect that strives to understand the environment from the perspective of end users (especially children e.g. through the CYE network) and also recognises the importance of using research evidence to inform practice. As such, I think they would make an excellent contribution to the IAPS Board and to the continued development of IAPS as the foremost interdisciplinary organisation in environment-behaviour studies.

ELLEN MATTHIES (Germany)I have been professor for environmental psychology at the Otto von Guericke University‐ ‐ ‐ Magdeburg since December 2011. My main research field is man environment interactions with a‐ ‐ focus on environmentally relevant behaviours (electricity use and car use) and decisions and theory driven development and evaluation of intervention measures to promote sustainable consumption. We offer a master program in psychology with a focus on environmental psychology. This master programme is unique in Germany. From August 2009 until November 2011 I held a position of Professor for Environmental Psychology at the NTNU, Trondheim, Norway. From 2003 to 2009 I was a member of the board of the "Fachgruppe Umweltpsychologie der Deutschen Gesellschaft fur Psychologie", an organization that established the biennial conference on environmental psychology, last one held in Groningen. Since 2013 I have been a member of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU). Having guided several very practical research projects related to fields of applied social psychology and environmental psychology (funded by national Research Foundations (e.g. German DFG or Norwegian NFR), the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Ministry of Environment), or EU, I seek to establish a broader and transdisciplinary approach to topics of Sustainability, climate protection and adaption and lifestyle changes. To support societal transformation towards a sustainable society we, as scientific agents, need not only to reflect research topics and approaches jointly over disciplinary boundaries, moreover we have to reflect on criteria for good research practice and training of young researchers. IAPS has established discourses about exactly these topics since long, and I would be happy to be involved and contribute in the IAPS developments in these fields!

NOMINATOR: RICARDO GARCIA MIRAEllen Matthies is an active researcher in the field of people environment studies, who has carried ‐out collaborative research work on relevant topics within the environmental psychology in the European research area. Her experience and her presence in the IAPS board will encourage the efficiency of our organization.

SECONDER: GIUSEPPE CARRUS

6/14

Page 7: iaps- Web viewProfessor Ricardo García Mira (President of IAPS) Department of Psychology – Faculty of Educational Sciences. University of A Coruna. Campus de Elviña, s/n. 15071-A

I know Ellen Matthies and I strongly appreciate her competence as researcher in the field of people‐environment studies, as well as her strong commitment to the IAPS activities. I think she will be an excellent board member.

TACIANO MILFONT (New Zealand)The commitment of the IAPS to foment work on the interrelations between people and their socio-physical surroundings is more important today than ever, and I am truly honoured to be nominated for the IAPS Board. My commitment to interdisciplinary activities and scholarship in this area is of long standing and growing stronger with time.I am an academic staff at the School of Psychology and Deputy Director of the Centre for Applied Cross-Cultural Research at the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. I received my BA and MSc from Brazilian universities, and obtained my PhD in social and environmental psychology from the University of Auckland. I have been a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Environmental Psychology and Environment and Behavior since 2011 and have published more than 120 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, including a chapter in the Oxford Handbook of Environmental and Conservation Psychology. My current research interests focus on a cross-cultural understanding of people–environment interactions.

If elected, one primary mission would be to work very closely with the other board members to support the IAPS in its current direction while implementing strategies to expand its role internationally, particularly attracting new members in Oceania and Asia. I believe our association is the ideal multidisciplinary forum for researchers and practitioners to communicate and work together to find solutions to issues related to people’s interaction with their environments, and I would work intensively to expand and further realise the potential of this forum. I would also be closely involved in the Young Researchers Workshop and related activities to help young researchers/practitioners with their involvement with the IAPS.

NOMINATOR: Petra, Schweizer-RiesI know Taciano besides his publications from the last YR-Workshop and I think he can support the work of IAPS very well and can also bring in scientific quality and support of our young researchers.

SECONDER: CLARE TWIGGER-ROSSTaciano would be a very welcome and able addition to the IAPS board bringing a wealth of experience from not only his area of expertise but also in terms of bringing IAPS to a wider membership in Oceania and Asia. He worked very well with the Young Researchers in IAPS2014 and showed his commitment and enthusiasm in communicating not only his subject but also wider aspects of the role of an academic. He was organised and engaged at the workshop and worked well with the other mentors. I have no hesitation in seconding his nomination and think that he would be able to make an excellent contribution to the work of the IAPS board.

SARAH PAYNE (UK)My main research interests are in restorative environments. I am interested in psychological restoration both cognitively and emotionally, and determining environments that are supportive for people on all positions of the mental health spectrum (e.g. from everyday fatigue to medicalised illnesses). Originally, I started out examining the ‘usual’ outdoor restorative environments involving nature, before considering the potential of indoor environments as restorative, ranging from cafes to hospital staff-rooms. Lately, I am particularly interested in the need for restorative environments for carers.

7/14

Page 8: iaps- Web viewProfessor Ricardo García Mira (President of IAPS) Department of Psychology – Faculty of Educational Sciences. University of A Coruna. Campus de Elviña, s/n. 15071-A

My other, complementary, main strand of research is of sensory experiences of environments, particularly how they sound (their soundscape). This was the crux of my PhD research and later supervisory projects. Again, this interest originated in outdoor soundscapes and their relationship with restoration, but now includes indoor environments. Finally, I am an Environmental Psychologist whom has largely been based within University Engineering departments; therefore I am also involved in sustainable building designs, including aspects around energy use, or issues on transportation (be that active living or electric vehicles). My current position is Assistant Professor of Health in the Built Environment at Heriot-Watt University, UK.

I would like to stand for the board as I feel like I am now in a position to contribute back to a society that has played a large role in developing me as an academic researcher. Back in 2008 I attended the Young Researchers Workshop, and it was an invaluable experience. Not only receiving feedback on my work, I met a wonderful group of fellow young researchers, who I am now lucky enough to call my friends as well as great research partners. The icing on the cake from that conference was I also won the Young Researchers Award. I want to help IAPS continue providing such invaluable support, connecting new and experienced researchers.Currently I co-convene two of the IAPS networks: Restorative Environments Network (since 2012) and the recently created Sensory Environments Network. My involvement in both these networks provides me with a broad understanding of what some IAPS members and interested partners want and appreciate from IAPS. Having IAPS board members strongly connected to the networks indicates the value IAPS places on them. Indeed the networks play a vital role in IAPS members feeling part of a community in-between the bi-annual conferences. I hope to use my experience of helping to create an active restorative environments network to help facilitate other networks, and IAPS itself, in its continued development as a sustainable strong research community.

NOMINATOR: KEVIN THWAITESI am delighted to have the opportunity to nominate Dr Sarah Payne to join the IAPS Board of Trustees. Sarah has been an active contributor to IAPS for a number of years, initially as a Young Researcher and more recently as a paper contributor and symposium organiser at IAPS conferences. In addition to these contributions, Sarah has a lead role in IAPS as a convener of the Restorative Environments network, through this making a significant contribution to its growth into the largest and most consistently active network. Sarah is also co-convener of the new Sensory Environments network and is thus strongly positioned to be able to help develop inter-network collaborations. Serving as a Board member will help to strengthen this potential.

As an environmental psychologist, Sarah has developed a range of research experience within a core area of IAPS’s interests. Beyond this, however, her experience in working on research projects that cross disciplinary boundaries brings the additional advantage of being able to contribute to the inclusivity and diversity of the IAPS research culture.

In conclusion, therefore, the combination of professional research experience in multi-disciplinary environments, coupled with a breadth of experience within IAPS itself makes Sarah an ideally equipped candidate for election to the IAPS Board.

SECONDER: KARIN TANJA-DIJSTRAI would like to use this opportunity to nominate Dr Sarah Payne to join the IAPS Board of Trustees. Sarah has been an active IAPS member since she attended the Young Researchers Workshop back in 2008 by contributing excellent research presentations and as a co-convenor of the Restorative Environments Network. Her work has a strong multi-disciplinary character and brings together several disciplines represented within the IAPS research community.

Page 9: iaps- Web viewProfessor Ricardo García Mira (President of IAPS) Department of Psychology – Faculty of Educational Sciences. University of A Coruna. Campus de Elviña, s/n. 15071-A

In the last eight years I got to know Sarah as a very positive, inspiring and enthusiastic person. She is very approachable, open to suggestions and has developed a strong network within the IAPS community.

This combination of her background and personality makes her an ideal candidate for election to the IAPS board.

ADRIANA PORTELLA (Brazil) Adriana Portella has been doing research in the area of environment-behaviour since 1997. Her interest is to understand how urban environment can affect human behaviour focusing in the following subjects: elderly and healthy cities, urban design, urban sustainability, urban accessibility and mobility, social housing, preservation of historic heritage, and urban planning. She has been publishing works related with the following topics: environmental quality; sense of place; social housing; visual pollution; preservation of historic cities, user’s behaviour, perception and cognition; urban mobility and accessibility; wayfinding in urban areas; space syntax; social segregation and urban density. She has a degree in Architecture and Urbanism at the Federal University of Pelotas (2001), and a Master degree in Urban and Regional Planning at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (2003) both institutions in Brazil. In September 2003, she began her PhD in Urban Design at The Joint Centre for Urban Design of Oxford Brookes University in England. The thesis was based on environmental psychology concepts and methodology. Her thesis analysed the influence of urban tourism, marketing the city, heritage preservation, and environment perception on the design of commercial streetscapes in order to understand its effects on people behaviour and quality of life. The thesis was concluded in May 2007. In July 2007, she began a Post-doctoral research in the Bartlett School of Planning of University College London, also in England, with Professor Matthew Carmona. During one year, she participated of the research 'Global place, contested space? The case of the 'new' London squares', funded by ESRC. Since August 2008, she is a Professor at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning of Federal University of Pelotas in Brazil. Between January 2009 to May 2013, she was the head of the Master course in Architecture and Urbanism of the same institution. Since March 2016, she is the Head of Architecture and Urban Planning Department. In 2014, the findings of her PhD thesis were published in London as a book entitle 'Visual Pollution: Advertising, Signage and Environmental Quality'. The book was published by Ashgate (http://www.ashgate.com/isbn/9780754675341). In addition, she has been published 12 papers in national and international journals, three chapters in international books, and one chapter in a national book. All publication related with studies developed in the area of environment-behaviour. In January 2016, the Project coordinated by Adriana in Brazil and Ryan Woolrych from Heriot-Watt University in UK ‘Place-Making with Older People: Towards Age Friendly Communities’ won the International Call ‘Cities Health and Social Science of the Food-Water-Nexus Energy Call'. This was a Newton Fund call to support join research projects between UK and Brazil. This project is between the four projects selected in the area of Healthy Cities-Urban. The project is an environment-behaviour research and aims to investigate how sense of place is experienced by older people from different social settings living in diverse neighbourhoods in Brazil and the UK, to translate these experiences into designs for age friendly communities that support sense of place, and to better articulate the role of older adults as active placemakers in the design process by involving the community at all stages of the research. The project will be developed in three years and is funded by ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council).

Page 10: iaps- Web viewProfessor Ricardo García Mira (President of IAPS) Department of Psychology – Faculty of Educational Sciences. University of A Coruna. Campus de Elviña, s/n. 15071-A

My first IAPS Conference was in Alexandria, later I went to the Conferences in Rome, Glasgow and Timisoara. IAPS was the first association where I could identify myself regarding my academic and research activities. I am interested in understand how built environment can influence behaviour and how we can stimulate and increase better quality of life. In developing countries as Brazil, urbanization is still very peccary in many cities, and since my graduation I am interested in understand how we can improve people life though urban revitalization projects that would take into consideration populations wishes, needs, desires, and perceptions. The IAPS Conferences were the first congresses that I met people that share the same views with me and discuss these subjects in an international research level. The area of environmental psychology is growing fast in Brazil, and we have a group of researchers that are developing many environment-behaviour studies to support urban transformation. In this way, I feel linked with the IAPS objectives and interests and, if possible, I would like to contribute with research discussions bringing issues related to environment studies developed in Brazil, and other developing countries. I also believe that the multidisciplinary network is an important step to disseminate the importance of studies related with human behaviour, and I would like to contribute with this.

NOMINATOR: OMBRETTA ROMICE I have Known Adriana through her work submitted to various IAPS conferences. Her focus on environment behaviour studies has always been tied to the design and management of public space in Brazil. She contributes an important design focus to our group and her presence on the Board is an important step in maintaining a positive collaboration between theory and practice.

SECONDER: ANTONIO TARCISO REISI have known Adriana since she was my master student at PROPUR (Postgraduate Program in Urban and Regional Planning), Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), in the field of environment and behaviour studies. She is a very responsible and competent person and has contributed to the field of study through her master and Ph.D. thesis and publications. Therefore, her presence on the Board is an important contribution to IAPS.

JENNIFER SENICK (New Jersey, USA)

Jennifer Senick, PhD, is Executive Director of the Rutgers Center for Green Building at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Urban Planning and Policy Development, Rutgers University, and an adjunct lecturer in the department. An experienced urban planner, Dr. Senick received her PhD. in Planning and Public Policy from Rutgers, her M.A. in Political Science from UCLA, and her A.B. in Government from Bowdoin College. Areas of expertise and publication include: sustainable development, green building, and environmental behaviour, trends in technology adoption/use and multi-method approaches to field inquiry and building performance evaluation. Current appointments include Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA), Board Member and co-chair of EDRA Sustainable Planning Design and Behaviour Network; Coordinator of International Health Planning and Impact Assessment Initiatives, American Planning Association (APA) International Division; Facilitator, NJ Health Impact Collaborative; Global Urbanism Biennial Theme Faculty Committee, Rutgers Global Advancement and International Affairs Centers (GAIA Centers); Rutgers Sustainability Committee.

As a current EDRA Board member, I have sought to advance collaboration with our sister E-B organizations and also related professional organizations such as the American Planning Association. In so doing, it has become clear to me that the nature of organizational affiliation is changing bringing both welcome opportunities (such as virtual participation in distantly located conferences)

10/14

Page 11: iaps- Web viewProfessor Ricardo García Mira (President of IAPS) Department of Psychology – Faculty of Educational Sciences. University of A Coruna. Campus de Elviña, s/n. 15071-A

and also more challenging ones (such as a means by which membership and conference dues can be scaled appropriately for new methods of participation and yet prove sufficient to cover organizational programming and membership development). At the same time, I find that E-B research is becoming more commonplace, even mainstream, although it is unclear to me the extent to which IAPS and/or EDRA are afforded the opportunity to weigh in on associated policy, programs and other decision-making regarding environmental behaviour. I do believe that greater IAPS-EDRA collaboration will afford these organizations an opportunity to exert more influence on important social processes, while simultaneously benefitting individual members. The task is a big one. I’m one person willing to participate in this endeavour.

NOMINATOR: PETRA SCHWEIZER-REIS

I have known Jennifer since her 1st IAPS conference (Glasgow), where we started the program of developing both an IAPS and an EDRA Sustainability Knowledge Network in that same year. Since then, Jennifer has joined us as a plenary speaker in A Coruña and served as a session reviewer for IAPS-Timisoara. Since our original meeting we have worked together to advance a sustainability and sustainability cultural change agenda, which includes also many colleagues in both IAPS and EDRA. Beyond her professional qualifications, Jennifer is a pleasure to work with; she is competent, intelligent and friendly. As an IAPS Board member, Jennifer will have an opportunity to work even more closely with IAPS colleagues to benefit the field of people environment research.

SECONDER: RICARDO GARCÍA MIRA

Jennifer is an excellent and dynamic researcher who has served in the EDRA board for some years and, knowing her abilities and dynamism, she would be a key person in improving our links with EDRA for the future, organizing common activities, research agendas, even joint conferences with IAPS. I appreciate her good qualities which will be very beneficial for IAPS. Given her experience, I think she is an excellent candidate for IAPS board. Her knowledge of the people-environment field in the United States can contribute to attract new members to IAPS.

HENK STAATS (The Netherlands)Almost all of my work is focused on environmental psychology: in teaching, research, and editorial ad managerial work. I teach a course on Environmental Psychology in the Psychology Master program of Leiden University. I supervise bachelor, master and PhD theses and internships that are always focusing on a topic in Environmental Psychology. My specific research interests include environmental preferences, psychological restoration, and the analysis and change of pro-environmental behavior. I cooperate with other disciplines (ecologists, architects, landscape architects, engineers), to research approaches that increase sustainability, biodiversity, scenic beauty, and well-being. Relevant publications can be found on Web of Science, ResearchGate and GoogleScholar. I am Senior Associate Editor of Environment and Behavior. The reason for standing for the Board is that I feel I owe IAPS a lot for all the work they did for me for so any years. The conferences, the informal contacts, the Newsletter, and the link to more formal publication outlets, specifically the Journal of Environmental Psychology and Environment and Behavior, have greatly increased my possibilities to pursue my interests and be effective as a researcher. I also think that I can contribute a bit through my experiences in the field, my contacts with other disciplines and my conviction that above all we should have academic respectability in our own discipline. I realize there is a trade-off between working interdisciplinary and be recognized and successful as a publishing author in psychology. This is not an easy position and one which has often proven difficult for environmental psychologists in their role as researcher in applied psychology. The fact that we have in IAPS professionals from different disciplines makes it an

important forum to exchange experiences and get to know each other’s expertise in a way that should be mutually beneficial. This issue has my interest and I would like to contribute to further and deepen this dialogue. My conviction is that the basis for this dialogue should be a solid training and high quality work in one’s own discipline.

NOMINATOR: BIRGITTA GATERSLEBENI wish to nominate Henk Staats for election as a new member of the IAPS board. He has significantly contributed to the development of the field through his research as well as through his teaching as well as through other activities such as symposia organisations, editorial and reviewing work. He is passionate about his work. He has inspired many people throughout his career. His passion for environmental psychology research certainly inspired me when I was a student in Leiden many years ago. His support and guidance helped me develop my career. KARINE WEISS (France)

I am currently working specifically on social representations of risks and risks management. My research interest focuses on two main topics: (1) the communication during crisis management (especially using NTIC and social media during natural or technological disasters) and (2) perceptions and social representations of emerging risks and their links with social practices linked to these risks. In both cases, I am working with interdisciplinary points of view, by integrating management and communication, and/or environmental sciences.

I am also currently the vice-president for International relationships in my University (University of Nîmes, South of France) and the director of the Doctoral School “risks and society”.

As a representative of environmental psychology in France, I would like to contribute in the development of effective links between the different national associations, and also the improvement of the research network in People-environment studies. I am sure that we now have a long experiment in different countries, which we could intensify with a better coordination.

My function of vice-president for international relationships will end next November; I will benefit from this experience for IAPS, especially in terms of networks knowledge and opportunities of nternational funding.

NOMINATOR: ENRIC POLKarine Weiss is Professor of Environmental Psychology at the University of Nimes. She gets her PHD in Paris, with Gabriel Moser. She has contributed actively to the consolidation and dissemination of environmental psychology in France. Together with her colleagues from the Laboratory of Environmental Psychology at the University Paris-Descartes, she promoted the creation of the Association of Francophone Environmental Psychology (ARPEnv).

Karine Weiss has published large number of articles on various aspects of environmental psychology, from social psychological and from social Representation approaches, including welfare; the relationship of the individual with natural resources and natural hazards; risk and risk management, both in natural and built environments, syndrome of the sick building, environmental psychology in France, and same books as author and as editor, among which we can highlight: Psychologie sociale et environnement; Psychologie et développement durable; Espaces de vie: Aspects de la relation homme-environnement.

SECONDER: SANDRINE DEPEAUKarine Weiss is an active, self-determined, well-recognised professor in environmental psychology. Among the numerous projects and moments shared with Karine, I had the opportunity to live and to share her determination to preserve the dynamics of environmental psychology during the creation of the association (Arpenv) in which I was lucky to participate by her side as treasurer. A way of keeping the dynamics Gabriel Moser had introduced and maintained, despite members of the laboratory of Paris being geographically scattered. She is sensitive to the promotion and visibility of the discipline in France as well as at the international level. Her active role in the international exchanges as Vice-President in charge of international relations at university of Nîmes gives evidence of it.

Last but not least, despite her scientific speciality Karine Weiss is a discerning researcher in environmental psychology open minded to the thematic diversity which constitutes the discipline.

So many qualities that lead me to support Karine Weiss’ application of for the IAPS board.
