1 | Page IQBAL ACADEMY P AKISTAN YEAR BOOK 2017-18 INTRODUCTION The Iqbal Academy Pakistan is a statutory body of the Government of Pakistan and a centre of excellence for Iqbal Studies established through the Act of Parliament in 1951 and re-enacted through Iqbal Academy Ordinance, 1962. The Academy is headed by a Director. The control of the Academy is vested in the Governing Body, headed by the Minister for Federal Education & Professional Training as its President. The major functions of the Academy are to promote and disseminate the study and understanding of the works and teachings of Allama Muhammad Iqbal. In order to translate its objectives into action, the Iqbal Academy undertakes the following activities: Research and Compilation; Publication programme; Outreach activities; Audio-Video and Mass-media Projects; IT Projects; Iqbal Awards programme; Website Development; Multimedia Initiatives; Archiving as well as Exhibitions, Conferences; Seminars; Projection Abroad; Research Guidance; Academic Assistance, Donations & Library Services.     ACTIVITIES OF ACADEMICS RESEARCH

    The Research activities are the driving force behind all the Iqbal Academy

    Pakistan initiatives. With a resource bank of scholars representing the top universities,

    academic institutions and research organizations worldwide, Iqbal Academy Pakistan

    collaborates with researchers from Pakistan, the USA, Canada, UK, Germany,

    Australia, Italy, France, Spain, Bosnia, Lithuania, Egypt, Turkey Iran, India, Malaysia,

    Singapore, Japan, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Russia, China, and many others, in 23 major

    languages of the world. The Iqbal Academy Pakistan's research falls into following

    seven domains:

    includes the life & times of Allama Muhammad Iqbal. Books published in 2017-18 on

    Deluxe Edition of Kulliyat e Iqbal (Urdu) In order disseminate message of Allama Iqbal, the Academy published deluxe edition of Kulliyat e Iqbal (Urdu) using state of the art modern technology, high quality and eminence style will give pleasure and better accessibility to the reader.

    Presidential Iqbal Awards Under the Presidential Order of 1981, the Academy executes the National and International Presidential Iqbal Awards, which are given on best books written in National and International languages, on Iqbal’s Life and Thought. The awards are conferred to promote the discipline of Iqbal Studies and to appreciate and encourage the contributions of Iqbal Scholars Year 2017-18 Four (4) Books received for Iqbal Award (English) 2012-14 Ten (10) Books received for Iqbal Award (Urdu) 2012 Five (5) Books received for Iqbal Award (Urdu) 2013 Four (4) Books received for Iqbal Award (Urdu) 2014 Ten (10) Books received for Iqbal Award (Urdu) 2015 The Meetings of the Judges/Experts Committee were held for the Iqbal Award (English) 2012-14 and Iqbal Awards (Urdu) 2012, 2013, 2014 & 2015. The recommendations of the Judges/Experts Committee will be furnished to Selection Committee for final approval. Thirty (30) Books received for Iqbal Award (Urdu) 2016 and Twelve (12) are short listed by the concerned committee.

    Iqbal Day Celebrations:

    Iqbal Academy Pakistan commemorated Iqbal Day 2017 with different activities. Singing Kalam –i-Iqbal Competition among school students was the salient feature of the celebrations. A special Seminar was also arranged. Leading Academicians as well as leaders from different walks of life participated. Special prizes and shields were awarded to the winners. Vice President Iqbal Academy Pakistan was the chief guest. Iqbal Quiz 2017

    Iqbal Academy Pakistan had organized Iqbal Quiz in collaboration with the Literary Society at University of Engineering and Technology Lahore. The winners were awarded with special shields and books by the Iqbal Academy Pakistan. A book Exhibition for Students and Faculty had also been arranged.

    One Month Book Exhibition by National Book Foundation Iqbal Academy Pakistan participated in a whole month Book Exhibition held at the National Book Foundation, Lahore premises. National Iqbal Conference 2018

    National Iqbal Conference 2018 titled ©©���� ¨"� ��� ª� «�,� ¬� \�®® had been organized by Iqbal Academy Pakistan on April 24-25, 2018. It is pertinent to mention that such activity was held after almost 15 years. Iqbal scholars from all over the country participated in the National Iqbal Conference and presented their research papers. More than 100 papers had been received for the conference. Healthy participation of young scholars and women was the key feature of NIC 2018. Governor Punjab Muhammad Rafique Rajwana inaugurated the two days Conference. Book Fair had also been organized on this occasion and publishers exhibited their stalls.

    International Outreach Assistance to foreign offices in different countries had been provided by the Academy in the form of books, Iqbal portraits and intellectual assistance in organizing Iqbal related events. In this connection, assistance provided to the foreign offices in Canada, Mauritius, India, Kuwait, Qatar and Bulgaria. Iqbal Academies in UK and Scandinavia were also assisted.

    LIBRARY

    Iqbal Academy’s library is largest and oldest library on Iqbal studies, consists of: More than hundred thousand books, journals, periodicals, newsletters, archives etc.

    More than six thousand books on Iqbal Studies. Books on Iqbal studies in 35 international languages including English, Chinese, Arabic, Persian, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Turkish, German, Bengali, Sanskrit and Hindi.

    Books in National and Regional Languages including Punjabi, Sindhi, Balochi, Brahui, Kashmiri, and Gujrati etc. Books on Philosophy, Religion, Metaphysics, Psychology, Pakistan Movement, Sufism, History, Sociology, Archeology and Arts etc. The Academy has developed a library automation software “Kitabdar”, which provides automated bibliographic information to the reader.

    IT SECTION OF THE ACADEMY

    Utilizing modern means of dissemination the Academy’s IT Section promotes the organizational mission through various initiatives, including:

    Planning, development, maintenance and implementation of IT Policy, infrastructure and Management Information System.

    Planning and development of mobile apps based on works of Iqbal. Maintaining & upgradation of 08 websites and official Email system of the

    Academy. Maintaining the Network Operation Center, Software & MIS development and

    implementation. Maintaining E-Governance Framework. Maintenance of pages on social media, like Facebook, Google+, twitter and

    channels on YouTube, Dailymotion etc.

    PERFORMANCE OF IT SECTION

    Year 2017-18

    From July 2017 to June 2018, the following projects, activities, tasks performed by IT Section of the Academy in order to publicize Iqbal’s thoughts around the globe using latest ways of information technology

    (I) Mobile Application of Kulliyat e Iqbal (Urdu):

    Mobile app comprising of Kulliyat e Iqbal (Urdu) for Android users has been planned, developed and uploaded on play store for public. The same was inaugurated by Governor of the Punjab on 24th April 2018. The same is being developed for iPhone/iPad users, which will be available at App Store during this year.

    Mobile applications for research journal of the Academy “Iqbal Review” & other multimedia products of the Academy will be prepared.

    (II) Allama Iqbal’s Rare Pictures Slideshow

    A slideshow of high resolution, rare pictures of Allama Iqbal has been prepared and uploaded on the website for further downloading and printing for global exhibitions.

    The slideshow has been uploaded on Allama Iqbal’s official website for further downloading wherever it needed around the world.

    Various organizations including Pakistani High Commission Mauritius & India, Iqbal Academy Canada, Dhehevi Academy Maldives and others benefited from it.

    (III) Short Films on Allama Iqbal’s poems/themes

    Short films on poems/themes of Allama Iqbal have been recorded in the voice of Mr. Zia Mohiyeddin & Mr. Shujaat Hashmi. Short film on Allama Iqbal’s poem “Pevista rah Shajar se” was prepared during 2011 floods in Baluchistan.

    Whereas, short films on Allama Iqbal’s poems Shikwa, Jawab e Shikwa, Lala e Sehra have been made in house, during this year.

    A contest for making short film based on Allama Iqbal’s poem “Lala e Sehra” was organized last year by the Academy, students from different institutes participated from all over the country.

    (IV) Websites & Video Channel

    The immense possibilities inherent in Digital and New Media remove the barriers of reach, allowing the flow of our message across the world. Adding accessibility and information flow at a click of a button digital outreach ensures global representation and creates a positive impression of our great legacy in the fields of scholarship, philosophy and world wisdom.

    Utilizing modern means of dissemination The IAP Information Technology Department promotes the organizational mission through various initiatives:

    This site offers in-depth access to the materials on Iqbal's life and works and provides necessary links for further probe and study. 200 Journals containing more than 30,000 pages in major languages i.e. English and Persian were uploaded

    Year 2017-18 During the Year 2017-18: New, user friendly, interactive and elaborative, version of the official website of Allama Iqbal has been uploaded. All the works of Allama Iqbal (Poetry & Prose), its related translations, explanations is present.

    A large number of audios in the voice of renowned artists/vocalists of Pakistan like Mehdi Hasan, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Zia Mohyiddin, Naeem Tahir and Mr. Sujaat Hashmi etc also uploaded on the website. Furthermore, videos and multimedia products related to Iqbal studies also uploaded on the website

    2) Iqbal Cyber Library

    Providing a free of charge, rare opportunity, to users globally in Iqbal Studies including: Books, References, Resources, Publications in a bilingual format. The website revamped, 1453 holdings of 813 contributors on 188 subjects in 20 languages, uploaded in PDF and TXT format with different categorization. All these mentioned enhancements made in the field of Iqbal Studies. 138 holdings available under the category of Works on Iqbal. All issues of Iqbal Review, Journal of the Iqbal Academy Pakistan, are now available Online. 150 publications of the Academy out of approx. 300 are available on this library portal.

    Year 2017-18

    During the period, enhancement in the data bank of the cyber library is continued, 30 books, 12 periodicals uploaded on the site.

    More than 3.0 Million visited this website and downloaded Iqbalian books from it.

    3) Website development of National Iqbal Conference 2018:

    A new website of National Iqbal Conference 2018 has been planned, developed and uploaded under the umbrella of our official website allamaiqbal.com

    It provided basic information including important dates, event detail, registration process, policy and other level guidelines for academics, scholars, writers, paper presenters and general public.

    Conference proceedings including conference program, abstracts, research papers also uploaded on the website.

    4) The Allama Iqbal Youtube Video Channel

    A giant in the sphere of Social Media, YouTube is the world's most popular online video sharing resource with a quoted 2 billion daily viewership on the internet.

    The Iqbal Academy Pakistan already launched its very own Video Channel uploading Television documentaries, drama productions, interviews, video footage of seminars and lectures to promote and exhibit the multifarious initiatives in the field of media and communication.

    10 videos have been uploaded on YouTube channel this year.

    5) Allama Iqbal’s page on Social Media

    The Iqbal Academy Pakistan has unique distinction among the public sector organizations by having web pages on most of social media sites like Facebook, Google+, Twitter etc.

    Allama Iqbal’s Facebook and Google+ pages have been liked by more than two hundred thousand peoples this year.

    One post on both pages uploaded on daily basis which is viewed and liked by more than 5000 people in one week.

    6) Digitalizing and Archiving Projects

    Iqbal Academy’s library has major collections of archiving material related to Allama Iqbal. The project is initiated more than a decade in order to scan, treat and digitalize these pictures, artifacts, letters, news clippings, works of Iqbal published in the life of Allama Iqbal etc. The major work has been done and already uploaded on the official website of Allama Iqbal. During this year (2017-18) following work done under this head:

    a. Digitalized Archiving material:

    100+ Allama Iqbal, family, artifacts, historical rare photographs scanned, treated and uploaded on the official website.

    400+ original letters written by Allama Iqbal, scanned, treated, ready for upload.

    b. Digitalization of Iqbal Personal Library

    On Allama Iqbal’s will his personal library was donated to Islamia College Lahore.

    432 books have been handed over to the Academy in 2013:

    225 books have been scanned, treated & digitalized, while 60 books are in the process.

    200 books have been uploaded on Iqbal Cyber Library.
