The typical role of i3B companies in collaborative projects is the development of sensors,

actuators, data acquisition systems, data analysis software, feedback systems and test

apparatus. The knowledge institutes provide insight in what to measure and how to inter-

pret brain and behavior data. In addition, i3B has sophisticated laboratories and facilities

for concept development, experimentation and field testing with end users.

r&d projects by participants

i3B submitted several subsidy applications in programs like NWO, STW and ITEA3. In these

projects i3B Foundation is a partner, or at least two i3B members are part of the consortium.

Success highlights:

NWO approval Motion Microscope An i3B consortium of Donders Institute, Noldus IT and Vicar Vision submitted the ‘Motion

Microscope’ proposal for the ICT with Industry workshop 2015. The proposal was granted,

resulting in great benefits for the i3B participants.

The ICT with Industry 2015 workshop was organized from 7 - 11 December 2015 with 50 Scien-

tists working on four Study cases. The five-day workshop, organized by NWO Physical Sciences

(EW) and STW, brought together scientists, in particular (junior) research staff and PhD’s, and

professionals from industry and government to face and resolve a complex study cases. The

workshop started with the companies and institutes presenting their practical business chal-

lenges to be followed by an intense week of analyzing, discussing, modeling and accelerating

solutions for the business cases.

Results

The workshop is expected to lead to a number of new scientific papers and/or research

initiatives.

The workshop is acknowledged by the research schools, ASCI, IPA and SIKS, as part of

the Credit Point system. Credits will be allocated upon evaluation and final assessment.

Please contact your mentor or promotor to check whether your participation in this

workshop fits your study program.

The workshop gave valuable input on how the ‘Motion Microscope’ algorithm can

visualize subtle motions and tremors in humans and animals, not visible for the

naked eye. The involved companies will benefit greatly from these new insights.

NeuroCIMT* STW approval The technology foundation (STW) has awarded the NeuroCIMT project funding of almost 6

million Euro. NeuroCIMT aims to develop new technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of

neurological disorders and sensory conditions. NeuroCIMT is a collaborative project carried

out between TU Delft, VUmc, Radboud UMC, LUMC, Erasmus MC, University of Twente, UMC

Utrecht and the Donders Institute and supported by several i3B company participants like

Motekforce Link, Artinis, ANT Neuro and TMSI.

An increasing number of people suffer from neurological disorders such as strokes or MS, or

have lasting conditions such as (partial) deafness or chronic pain. In order to manage these

conditions and disorders it is essential to have the tools for precise diagnosis and develop-

ment of individual treatment plans. NeuroCIMT aims to provide these tools.

Using techniques such as EEG, the participating researchers at NeuroCIMT will generate new

models about the location and timing of nervous signals in the brain that are relevant to clini-

cal conditions. The project will investigate the commonalities and differences between brain

signals recorded in conditions in auditory cortex, pain regulation, blood pressure regulation,

and movement control. This will result in more precise diagnosis and can enable more focused

treatment efforts.* NeuroCIMT is short-hand for ‘Neuromodulation by Continuous and Integrated Monitoring and Treatment to improve functional outcome in neurological disorders’.

MIT subsidy approval: Recognize emotion in a virtual shop With huge sums spent on developing and introducing new and healthy food products every

year, it is vital that the industry is able to understand the details of why consumers choose for

particular food products, and why some fail. In this project, Noldus IT (who make solutions for

measuring behavior), NIZO (who offer contract research to the food industry) and VicarVision

(who specialize in measuring emotion) will work together to create a very innovative new

solution to measure consumers’ behavior when they are choosing food products. How and

why they choose a particular product will be measured in a virtual environment, with a wealth

of detail and depth of information which was never before possible. The project outcome will

be offered to customers both as a product for those who want to carry out the measurements

themselves and as a service for those who prefer that.

STW Breed4Food approval Phenolab Farm animals are increasingly kept in group hou-

sing systems. The industry faces animal behavior

and health issues, which require monitoring to

enable early detection and adequate solutions.

Sensors measure a specific aspect of the animal’s

performance, but there are no solutions inte-

grating information from multiple sensors. The

objective of this project is to develop and apply

integrated sensing tools to measure, interpret and

ultimately predict behavior of laying hens in group housing, in interaction with their physical

and social environment. Participants Wageningen University, University of Twente, i3B Foun-

dation and Noldus IT submitted the successful STW proposal.

FOCOM finalized On 15 December 2015, the FOCOM consortium gathered at

the KraftHeinz Innovation Center in Nijmegen to celebrate the

successful completion of this 4-year project. The goal was

the development of a Food Choice Simulator, a system for

the measurement of perception, choice behavior and brain

response of consumers in a virtual shop. Furthermore the
