Have you ever seen a scarecrow dance in the streets before nightfall? Dancing freely? Dancing joyfully? Dancing the way

only a straw facsimile of man, a man unhindered by the mortal coil, can?

How about free stuff? You like free stuff?

Sumner’s annual Autumn Evening sale, complete with dancing scarecrows

p r o -vided by A s c e n -s i o n T h e at re Produc-t i o n s , will take place for the 10th year in a row Oct. 1. This year is the first that the Autumn Evening will take place over the entire day.

“Years ago, it was just us doing it,” said Kris Williamson, a partner owner in Today’s Country Store. “We just wanted to do something to show our appreciation for our cus-tomers. After two years, our neighbors thought it looked like a fun event, and asked themselves ‘Why don’t we all do it?’ My favorite mem-ory was when it became a town event.”

The growing popularity of the sale prompted down-

town merchants to extend the event’s run to 10 hours, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., to spread out the foot traffic through stores.

Ascension’s Dancing Scarecrows will be silently lurking about all day, mov-ing from still pose to still pose surreptitiously and scaring the dickens out of honest, taxpaying folk. Their marauding mischief will only cease when the haunting beats of “Ease on Down the Road” beckon them into the middle of the road to twitch and jerk their boneless limbs in unholy rhythm.

The show is a homegrown

favorite, such that the com-munity of Redondo in Des Moines invited them to perform at the Poverty Bay Arts Festival in 2010.

The meat of Autumn Evening will still be in the three hours at the end of the day.

Each store will hold its own customer appreciation activity, at its own discre-tion.

For its part, Today’s Country Store will stick to what works and dim the lights for a cozy eve-ning shopping experi-ence. Candy will be stocked for kids and kids at heart and, just maybe,

the store could have a product drawing to be determined.

Another store, Simple Tidings and Kitchen, will have several product dem-onstrations and giveaways from companies such as Thymes Gift Baskets, Soda Stream Home Soda Makers and Kyocera Ceramic Knives, owner Suzanne Kipfer said.

Some stores will also be party to a scarecrow con-test. Owners will decorate a (non-dancing) scare-crow to place in front of their shop, and passersby will be invited to vote on their favorite.

October 20, 21, 22 and October 27, 28, 29

Enumclaw High School drama department presents “Dracula” at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

October 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 and 30

Everyone’s favorite clini-cally depressed eight-and-a-half-year-old will be brought to vivid life when ManeStage puts on “You’re a

Good Man, Charlie Brown.”The musical comedy fea-

tures sad sack namesake Charlie Brown (Jay Henson), his carefree beagle Snoopy (Bryce Smith), as well as the rest of the ensemble cast of Charles Schulz’s “Peanuts” comic strip.

The musical was origi-nally staged in 1967 and has since become a favorite of amateur and community theatre companies for its minimal set requirements

and manageable cast size. The story is a series of

vignettes about the charac-ters’ lives, hung on Charlie Brown’s concerns over whether the facets of his life make him a “good man,” as his friends tell him.

“This is personally one of my favorite productions,” Director Brenda Henson said. “It’s a good show for families in general. Kids will love it, and parents will rec-ognize the Peanuts charac-

ters they grew up reading. “Plus you get to see adults

pretending to be children.”Admission is $16 for

general admission, $13 for students and seniors, and $10 for children 10 and younger.

The show opens Oct. 15, 7 p.m. at Sumner Performing Arts Center. It also runs Oct. 16 at 2 p.m., Oct. 21

at 7 p.m., Oct. 22 at 7 p.m., Oct. 23 at 2 p.m., Oct. 28 at 7 p.m., Oct. 29 at both 2 and 7 p.m., and Oct. 30 at 2 p.m.

November 5Ragtime/boogie-woogie

pianist Bob Milne returns to the Plateau at 2 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Chalet Theater.

Milne is considered one

of the world’s greatest liv-ing ragtime pianists and was called a national treasure after he was interviewed and documented for future gen-erations by the U.S. Library of Congress in 2004.

Stage Door Productions has arranged for this legend to entertain Plateau audi-ences, for information, visit www.stagedoorprod.org.

October 1-October 31• The Fright Factory in

Buckley continues its reign as one of the premier haunt-ed houses in the region. The venue opens for busi-ness Oct. 1 and will run through Halloween night. General admission is $10, but guests can save $1 by taking a donation for the local food bank. Or, there is a coupon on the website, www.frightfactory.net, for $1 off. Days of operation and hours vary through the month; for details visit the website.

• Maris Farms, the popu-lar seasonal attraction on Sumner-Buckley Highway between Buckley and Bonney Lake, is back for another year of fun.

The entertainment comes in all forms, from children picking a perfect pumpkin to the late-night frightfest in the haunted woods.

Guests can enjoy the eight-acre corn maze, with its “Out of This World” theme, a courtyard full of activities for kids, peddle cart racing, monster truck rides, tube slides, a jumping pillow, pony rides and more. Pig races will again benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The haunted woods cov-ers about five acres of corn and woods near the back of the property. Visitors stand in an old cattle barn as they wait their turn to be sent out into a maze of trails. The trails wind through various sets, which include scary characters lurking in the bushes, in the trees and around the corners.

The farm opens for the season Oct. 1 and will oper-

ate through Oct. 31.Maris Farms, in its 16th

year of operation, is at 24713 Sumner-Buckley Highway. Visit www.marisfarms.com or call 888-235-5439 for additional information, event dates, admission pric-es and times.

• Visit the Thomasson Family Farm for great fam-ily fun. Take a hayride, wind through a corn maze, find the perfect pumpkin. Enjoy the Kid’s Korral, Korral Kafe and the Country Store and Sweet Shop. The farm is located at 38228 236th Ave. S.E., Enumclaw. For more information go to [email protected] or visit the website at www.thomassonfamily-farm.com.

• As the air turns cool and the spooky season is just around the corner, Farm Fresh Produce on state Route 410 in Bonney Lake is again prepping for a sea-son full of scary fun for kids of all ages.

Along with the farm’s large pumpkin patch, there will again be hayrides, a jumphouse and the sling-shot. Also back again this fall is the farm’s haunted house, and monster truck rides through the mud behind the farm.

Along with the haunted house is Farm Fresh’s Haunt Xtreme, which includes live actors on the weekends and is designed for “guys who want to be a little more scared,” according to owner Brad Ziemke.

“I’d say last year one in five bailed out,” Ziemke said with a slight smile.

But as always, the big draw is the farm’s corn maze, which this year fea-tures a “Great Pumpkin” theme. This year, along with the Charlie Brown-themed maze up front, which fea-tures a five-part puzzle that when completed earns a free pumpkin, a second maze was added to a back field, which Ziemke promises is

October 1Lake Tapps is 100 years

old and Cascade Water Alliance is ready to cele-brate.

Originally built as a res-ervoir built to turn tur-bines and generate power for the region, Lake Tapps has become a recreation destination for Pierce County, known for sum-mer fun.

This fall, the water pur-veyor is hosting a free centennial celebration of the construction of Lake Tapps with food, entertain-ment, tours and a history of the White River Project, including Lake Tapps and the old Powerhouse.

The event is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Powerhouse, 2111 East Valley Highway in Sumner.

Cascade is offering tours of the Powerhouse every half-hour from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Space on the tours is limited and avail-able on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Powerhouse is not an ADA compliant facil-ity, however and individu-als interested in the tour are warned that there are a series of steep staircases and extensive walking on the tour.

Members of the Greater Bonney Lake Historical Society will also be on hand Oct. 1, with a series

of prepared displays and slideshows showing histor-ic photos of the project and construction of the lake.

Winona Jacobsen, author of “Images of the Bonney Lake Plateau,” which con-tains a chapter on con-struction of the lake, will also be on hand to sign copies of the book, which will be available for pur-chase. All proceeds from the sale of the book benefit the Historical Society.

Food and entertainment is also planned for the day, including free picnic food, a taste of birthday cake for all and special activities for the kids, all to the sound of live, old-time music per-formed by the band 1928.

The Greater Bonney Lake Historical Society and the Bonney Lake Courier-Herald are both co-sponsors of the event.

October 4Sacred Heart Catholic

Church invites communi-ty members to bring their pets to its annual St. Francis Animal Blessing at 6 p.m. Oct. 4 in the church court-yard in Enumclaw.

October 22The 20th annual Plateau

Health and Wellness Expo

is set for Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Enumclaw High School commons and gymna-sium.

The Enumclaw Senior Activity Center sponsored the first Enumclaw Senior Health Fair in October 1992. Since that time, the Plateau community has shown great enthusiasm for the event that it has grown into one of the most successful and well attend-ed health fairs in King and Pierce counties. This year Enumclaw Regional Healthcare Foundation and St. Elizabeth Hospital of Franciscan Health System has partnered to continue the tradition and offer a similar event this fall. Since this is the 20th annual event – we thought it was appropriate to make it a larger Expo and include a few more components. With joint efforts, we are expanding the Senior Health and Wellness Expo to be the Plateau Health and Wellness Expo. This year’s event will be open to all ages and is intended to provide a wider range of vendors, a lecture series focusing on all age groups, fitness demonstrations, safety components from the local fire and police departments and good-ol’ family fun for a day. In addition to the vendors that have participated in the past, we will be invit-ing vendors such as local fire and police depart-ments, offerings for bicy-cle helmet safety, car seat safety, and much more. For information contact: Rene Popke, 253-405-7179, [email protected].

The ceremony of light-ing candles on the graves and praying the Rosary as darkness falls has been happening there for at least 123 years. It is an eastern European tradition that was brought over by the first Catholic settlers to the area.

After a brief hiatus, Plateau Community Players are center stage again.

The Plateau-based com-munity theater group is hosting auditions for a December production of “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.”

Plateau Community Players’ Dennis Riley and Stephanie Leeper said the group has been laying low for the past few years, but recently met to breathe life into its dormancy.

The group went back to its roots for a fundraising event, a holiday classic it brought to the stage in the past.

“The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” is a one-hour, kid-friendly show sched-uled to open at 7 p.m. Dec. 2 at the White River High School theater. There will be additional shows at 1, 3:30 and 7 p.m. Dec. 3. Tickets are $5.

Auditions are scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 30 and 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Osceola Community Club, 45623 220th Ave. S.E., Enumclaw.

The play is about the Herdmans, the worst kids in the history of the world. A group that lies, steals, smoke cigars, swear, hit lit-

tle kids and invades church one Sunday and decides to take over the annual Christmas pageant. The Herdmans have never heard the Christmas story and their interpretation has a lot of people up in arms, but in the end the Christmas mes-sage is clear.
