“That the pope or bishop anoints, makes tonsures, ordains, consecrates, or dresses differently from the laity, may make a hypocrite or an idolatrous oil-painted icon, but it in no way makes a Christian or spiritual human being. In fact, we are all consecrated priests through Baptism, as St. Peter in 1 Peter 2[:9] says, "You are a royal priesthood and a priestly kingdom," and Revelation [5:10], "Through your blood you have made us into priests and kings.”

Jesus’ 7 Characteristics of Servant-Leadership

1. Humility (position) - phil 2:5-8...Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

2. Seeks learning & wisdom - Luke 2:40,46-47...And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him....After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.

4. Compassionate - Matt 15:21-28...And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” And he answered, “It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.” Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly.

5. Makes & Keeps commitments - Mark 14:32-36...And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.” And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

SERVANT’S HEART

• John 13… Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 4 rose from supper.

Page 25: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

SERVANT’S HEART

He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” 8 Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.”

Page 26: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

SERVANT’S HEART

Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” 9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

Page 27: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

SERVANT’S HEART

12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater

Page 28: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. 18 I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ 19 I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”

• I HOLD these truths to be self-evident:

• That man was made to be happy;

• That happiness is only attainable through useful effort;

• That the best way to help ourselves is to help others, and often the best way to help others is to help ourselves;

• That useful effort means the proper exercise of all our faculties;

• That we grow only through this exercise;

Page 31: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

Elbert Hubbard

• That education should continue through life, and the joys of mental endeavor should be, especially, the solace of the old;

• That where men alternate work, study and play in right proportion, the organs of the mind are the last to fail, and death for such has no terrors;

• That the possession of wealth can never make a man exempt from useful, manual labor;

• That if all would work a little, none would ever be overworked;

Page 32: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

Elbert Hubbard

• That if no one wasted, all would have enough;

• That if none were overfed, none would be underfed;

• That the rich and "educated" need education quite as much as the poor and illiterate;

• That the presence of a serving class is an indictment and a disgrace to our civilization;

Page 33: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

Elbert Hubbard

• That the disadvantage of having a serving class falls most upon those who are served, not upon those who serve—just as the real curse of slavery fell upon the slave-owner;

• That the presence of a serving class tends toward dissolution instead of toward co-operation;

• That people who are waited on by a serving class cannot have a just consideration for the rights of others, and that they waste both time and substance, both of which are lost forever, and can only partially be made good by additional human effort;

Page 34: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

Elbert Hubbard

• That the person who lives on the labor of others, not giving himself in return to the best of his ability, is really a consumer of human life, and therefore no better than a cannibal;

• That each one living, naturally will do the thing he can do best, but that in useful service there is no high nor low;

• That all duties, offices and things which are useful and necessary are sacred, and that nothing else is or can be.

Page 35: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

SERVANT’S HEART

• Phil 2...Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

• Matt 20...But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26 It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

“Right here we must see the difference between choosing to serve and choosing to be a servant. When we choose to serve, we are still in charge. We decide whom we will serve and when we will serve. And if we are in charge, we will worry a great deal about anyone who is stepping on us, that is, taking charge over us. But when we choose to be a servant, we give up the right to be in charge. If we voluntarily choose to be taken advantage of, then we cannot be manipulated.”

• Mark 9...And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” 34 But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. 35 And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”

Are you willing to be a servant?

Page 45: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

Concerns to consider

• People often serve others from their own need for approval or for significance

• We need to identify and work toward serving the real needs of others and not ‘caving’ into their wants and demands

• Many people have a desire for status or to feel important and will never truly embrace the position of servant

Page 46: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

Concerns to consider

• Many people often attempt to meet their own felt needs by meeting the needs of others

• Self-centered living or seeking happiness from the world rather than in the Savior and His purpose and call on one’s life

• Doing the “work of God” can cause us to lose our relationship with the God of the “work”

Page 47: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

How to Develop a Servant’s Heart

1. Recognize that Status is irrelevant

2. Select a Ministry in your church and make a commitment to serve engaging in practical deeds to fulfill God’s calling

3. Identify yourself as FAST• Faithful• Available• Submitted• Teachable

How to Develop a Servant’s Heart

4. Understand that Satan’s heart is the direct opposite of a Servant’s heart.

5. Keep a journal to mark your service and reflect monthly to see how God is working in and through your life.

Our evangelism is a reflection of this: we think we need to bring people to church,So they can hear about

As one body, where everyone has a specific role to play.

On a battleship Everyone has a job, but they also have a responsibility to

Jesus’ 7 Characteristics of Servant-Leadership

1. Humility (position) - phil 2:5-8...Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Jesus’ 7 Characteristics of Servant-Leadership

Jesus’ 7 Characteristics of Servant-Leadership

3. Receives instruction (agenda) - John 5:30...“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.

Page 67: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

Jesus’ 7 Characteristics of Servant-Leadership

Page 69: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

Jesus’ 7 Characteristics of Servant-Leadership

6. Forgives others (Rights) - Matt 6:14-15...For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Page 70: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

Jesus’ 7 Characteristics of Servant-Leadership

7. Makes disciples - matt 28:16-20...Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. and when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted.

SERVANT LEADERSHIP

• The Idea of Servant-Leadership is an idea with great tension.

1.The Heart of a Servant

2.The Vision of a Leader(Great tension: heart of a servant often times conflicts with the vision to be a leader.

People often choose one or the other, but Jesus said to be both. )

Page 72: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

SERVANT LEADERSHIP

“A triviality is a statement whose opposite is false. However, a great truth is a statement whose opposite may well be another great truth.“

(Triviality: was Jesus 100% God or 100% man? Both

Can Justice and Mercy be expressed in its fullest at the exact same time? And yet God is both just and merciful.)

SERVANT LEADERSHIP

“The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function.“

(Servant Leadership is not something that comes naturally to us, but something that God can use in amazing ways. It is up to us to hold the tension between the two.)

Page 76: I Want 2 ENGAGE.

Page 77: I Want 2 ENGAGE.

Page 78: I Want 2 ENGAGE.

Page 79: I Want 2 ENGAGE.

ELBERT HUBBARDRESPECTABILITY: ITS RISE AND REMEDY 1905

(book criticizing American Culture for raising a serving class. His criticism was directed to how we look down upon servants.)

(Next slide is from the book intro)

Page 81: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

• I HOLD these truths to be self-evident:

• That man was made to be happy;

• That happiness is only attainable through useful effort;

• That the best way to help ourselves is to help others, and often the best way to help others is to help ourselves;

• That useful effort means the proper exercise of all our faculties;

• That we grow only through this exercise;(in other words, if we are to grow, we have to work at it, we have to be willing to

serve and get our hands dirty)

Page 82: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

Elbert Hubbard• That education should continue through life, and the joys of

mental endeavor should be, especially, the solace of the old;

• That where men alternate work, study and play in right proportion, the organs of the mind are the last to fail, and death for such has no terrors;

• That the possession of wealth can never make a man exempt from useful, manual labor;

• That if all would work a little, none would ever be overworked;

(these last two statements are contradictory to our society, we try to rise to a place of becoming free of manual labor. I was driving with my uncle one time and we were driving through some construction with workers on the left and right. My uncle told me, “see those guys working out there?” I responded, “yes.” He then said, “get a college education unless you want to end up fixing roads like they are.” I remember being a little put off thinking, “what if I want to do that” but I never said that out loud! His point was not to be a jerk, but to instill the message the lack of college degree means you will have to work hard in what could be perceived as a menial job.)

Page 83: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

Elbert Hubbard

• That if no one wasted, all would have enough;

• That if none were overfed, none would be underfed;

• That the rich and "educated" need education quite as much as the poor and illiterate;

• That the presence of a serving class is an indictment and a disgrace to our civilization;

Page 84: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

Elbert Hubbard

• That the disadvantage of having a serving class falls most upon those who are served, not upon those who serve—just as the real curse of slavery fell upon the slave-owner;

• That the presence of a serving class tends toward dissolution instead of toward co-operation;

• That people who are waited on by a serving class cannot have a just consideration for the rights of others, and that they waste both time and substance, both of which are lost forever, and can only partially be made good by additional human effort;

Page 85: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

Elbert Hubbard

• That the person who lives on the labor of others, not giving himself in return to the best of his ability, is really a consumer of human life, and therefore no better than a cannibal;

(Do you know how many cannibals we have in the church? Those who may not say, but live out with their actions the notion of “you serve me, but don’t ask me to help.” I won’t bother mentioning the children’s ministry on this one.)

• That each one living, naturally will do the thing he can do best, but that in useful service there is no high nor low;

• That all duties, offices and things which are useful and necessary are sacred, and that nothing else is or can be.

(the pastor and the janitor are on equal playing field. The greeter at the door, and the accountant that counts the tithe every week are on equal playing field. The volunteer in the coffee shop and the audio volunteers are on the same playing field)

Page 86: I Want 2 ENGAGE.

5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

the scriptures

• Matt 20...But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26 It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

LITTLE DEATHS OF GOING BEYOND OURSELVES. SERVICE

BANISHES US TO THE MUNDANE, THE ORDINARY, THE TRIVIAL”

“Right here we must see the difference between choosing to serve and choosing to be a servant. When we choose to serve, we are still in charge. We decide whom we will serve and when we will serve. And if we are in charge, we will worry a great deal about anyone who is stepping on us, that is, taking charge over us. But when we choose to be a servant, we give up the right to be in charge. If we voluntarily choose to be taken advantage of, then we cannot be manipulated.”

SERVANT’S HEART

• Mark 9...And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” 34 But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. 35 And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”

Are you willing to be a servant?

Page 96: I Want 2 ENGAGE.

Page 97: I Want 2 ENGAGE.

Page 98: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

what roadblocks would keep you from being a

How to Develop a Servant’s Heart

1. Recognize that Status is irrelevant

2. Select a Ministry in your church and make a commitment to serve engaging in practical deeds to fulfill God’s calling

3. Identify yourself as FAST• Faithful• Available• Submitted• Teachable

Page 100: I Want 2 ENGAGE. ENGAGE Priesthood of the believer: 1 Peter 2:9...But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,

How to Develop a Servant’s Heart

4. Understand that Satan’s heart is the direct opposite of a Servant’s heart.

5. Keep a journal to mark your service and reflect monthly to see how God is working in and through your life.
