Jesus’ 7 Characteristics of Servant-Leadership

1. Humility (position) - phil 2:5-8...Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.


2. Seeks learning & wisdom - Luke 2:40,46-47...And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him....After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.


3. Receives instruction (agenda) - John 5:30...“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.


4. Compassionate - Matt 15:21-28...And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” But he did not answer her a word. Concerns to consider

• People often serve others from their own need for approval or for significance

• We need to identify and work toward serving the real needs of others and not ‘caving’ into their wants and demands

• Many people have a desire for status or to feel important and will never truly embrace the position of servant


• Many people often attempt to meet their own felt needs by meeting the needs of others

• Self-centered living or seeking happiness from the world rather than in the Savior and His purpose and call on one’s life

• Doing the “work of God” can cause us to lose our relationship with the God of the “work”

How to Develop a Servant’s Heart

1. Recognize that Status is irrelevant

2. Select a Ministry in your church and make a commitment to serve engaging in practical deeds to fulfill God’s calling

3. Identify yourself as FAST• Faithful• Available• Submitted• Teachable


4. Understand that Satan’s heart is the direct opposite of a Servant’s heart.

5. Keep a journal to mark your service and reflect monthly to see how God is working in and through your life.

(these last two statements are contradictory to our society, we try to rise to a place of becoming free of manual labor. I was driving with my uncle one time and we were driving through some construction with workers on the left and right. My uncle told me, “see those guys working out there?” I responded, “yes.” He then said, “get a college education unless you want to end up fixing roads like they are.” I remember being a little put off thinking, “what if I want to do that” but I never said that out loud! His point was not to be a jerk, but to instill the message the lack of college degree means you will have to work hard in what could be perceived as a menial job.)
