The 5th International Symposium on Emerging Trends and Technologies in Libraries and Information Ser-
vices’ (ETTLIS) was held during February 21-23, 2018 at the BU in association with the University of East London,
The Warburg Institute, School of Advance Study, University of London and Japan Society of Library and Infor-
mation Science with technical support from IEEE U.P. Section
Educational institutions are moving towards ubiquitous access to many of its services which at times poses challeng-es for information scientists and administrators. Taking this challenge very seriously, we at BU had been spearhead-
ing the deliberations for the entire community to benefit.
It is fitting that the Times Group endeavour, BU, which always backed Information Science spearheaded such a no-
ble and enviable task
The symposium was conceptualized a decade ago, in 2008 by
Dr. Sanjay Kataria. First four series were held in 2008, 2010, 2012 and
2015 respectively.
ETTLIS 2018 saw a culmination of information scientists participating in symposiums and workshops to keep the fire invigorated and keep
abreast with the developments and provide seamless services to their users. This symposium was one such event where the information scien-tists had gathered to deliberate on what BU would label as the game
changing event.
It is fitting that the Times Group endeavour, BU, which always backed Information Science spearheaded such a noble and enviable task. The symposium was conceptualized a decade ago, in 2008 by Dr. Sanjay Ka-
taria. First four series were held in 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2015 respec-tively.
We were overwhelmed by the response which once again proved the faith bestowed by the Information Science Community on our efforts.
With pride, we acknowledge that Information Scientists from 16 differ-ent countries along with our own forerunners from India have contribut-ed in this collection.

Book exhibitions are a way to celebrate reading and inculcate reading
habits among youngsters. The LRC at BU organizes book exhibitions
that aims the culmination of intellectuals and dignitaries in academics,
renowned publishers and authors under one roof.
A vast array of upcoming and trending books are displayed for recom-
mendation on such occasions.
The LRC at BU keeps it going! Periodical training programs are orga-
nized to upgrade the skills and capabilities of LRC team.
As LRC has initiated Research Support Services for the university,
LRC staff obtained training on Bibliometrics from Dr. K. C. Garg, for-
mer Chief Scientist, NISCAIR on November 11, 2018. Major output
of the workshop was the understanding of measure and analysis of re-
search trends globally.
Various in-house upskilling workshops are in pipeline.

STUDENT CORNER
The God of Small Things .
In a tale of complicated relationships and inter-family emotions, Arundhati Roy takes us to the backwaters of
Kerala in her Man Booker Prize-winning novel, The God of Small Things. The story re-
volves around a set of twins Rahel and Esthappen who were separated at an early age and
switch from the past to the present when they were united after almost 20 years. The God of
Small Things teleports you to the Kottayam district of Kerala letting you breathe the damp
air of the land, feel the political unrest in the people, lets you swim in the backwaters of
Kottayam and see rural Kerala through the naïve yet inquisitive eyes of two, 8-year old chil-
dren. The story is beautifully written, and the characters masterfully woven. Everyone in the
story; from the protagonists to the side characters seem so real and authentic, one can’t help
but feel like a silent observer of the daily life of small-town Keralites. Arundhati Roy’s un-
derstanding of human behaviour and complex emotions is evident through the way she cre-
ates situations and characters.
One of the book’s most unique aspects is its own vocabulary. Roy loves to create her own
words which makes perfect sense in content to the story and gives us an insight to the way
language is customised or should I say “remixed” according to the way of speaking of that
region.
In conclusion, ‘The God of Small Things’ is a must read for those who want to escape, for
those who want to get better understanding of the interpersonal relationships, people who are
trying to create Montesquieu impressionist work through their
words or just people looking for some good literature. I recom-
mend everyone to dive into this oddly specific yet fantasy world,
hand woven by Arundhati Roy.

Testimonial
LRC in BU is a place where I spend most of my time when there is no class. Not only the
collections but also the cozy sitting arrangement and ambience of the library is what I like
most in Bennett. Everything seems to be in place here and the automated kiosks save a lot of
my time. Online resources and databases subscribed
by the library are an added advantage for research
scholars like me.
