Pawleys Presbyterian

Advent Season is upon us with many changes happening during the month of December. The first Sunday in December is the start of Advent. We have two Pulpit Supplies for services this month. The Rev. Bobby Wilkes will be filling the pulpit on Dec. 3rd, 10th, and 31st. We welcome him to our pulpit. He has been here before and was well received by all. Please remember that we will celebrate the Lord’s Supper as well as the usual Advent Program events on the first Sunday. December 17th will feature a Service of Lessons and Carols which will highlight our Choir and the reading of Scripture. December includes a change of schedule for our Christmas Eve services on December 24th. The Worship Team has rescheduled the events for that day as follows: The usual Children’s and Family Candlelight Service will be presented at the 10:00am regular service time. This will be a change necessitated by the need to simplify the Christmas Eve Schedule. The Christmas Eve Candlelight Communion Service will be at 7:30pm to accommodate our Pastor Emeritus, The Rev. Frank Holsclaw who will preside over the service. We welcome Frank back into the pulpit for this occasion. As you all know, Frank is the Bridge Pastor Supply for the Murrells Inlet Presbyterian Church. Oh yes, then comes January and beyond. We have engaged The Rev. Gary Lowe to serve as our Bridge Pastor Supply starting January 7, 2018 until the permanent pastor is called and is on the campus at Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church as our Pastor. Gary is currently serving as a Hospice Minister and will be free to preach on Sundays for the extended time necessary. I guess that brings up the question that is asked with regularity: WHEN ARE WE GOING TO GET A PERMANENT MINISTER? As Clerk of Session, I do not have an answer to that question, but I am assured that the process is going smoothly and the absence of an Interim

Minister is not causing them to rush just to fill the position. They are meeting weekly and diligently reading resumes, making phone calls, listening to tapes of prospects and searching for the person God is sending to us. They assure us at each Session Meeting that the process is making headway and will bring us a minister that fills our needs as soon as possible. In the meantime, the Session has challenged the Deacons and Teams to continue their service to the congregation as usual. For those in need of counselling or other services that the pastor usually provides, please notify Tina of your need and she will seek someone who is able to meet your needs: a minister in case of a death and need for a funeral; a Stephen Minister for many other personal needs; or the appropriate church officer to answer your everyday concerns related to church operations. Let us remember the words of Paul… “I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace.” I urge you to continue your obedience to God and remember…God is the one in Charge. We will persevere during this unsettling period through Faith. Bill McElroy, Clerk of Session

SALT YOUTH Meets every Sunday at 5:30 PM

In Founders Hall

Sadie Robertson was awesome! Seeing her older brother, John Luke, was a plus! We enjoyed the story and rapping of Steven Malcolm and American Idol star Hollyn. Anthem Lights led us on a harmonious tour of hymns both old and new. It was a jam-packed evening with praise and worship and learning how to “get up off the floor” and stand tall to be the “fearfully and wonderfully” made people God meant for us to be. Our Sunday School study will be in conjunction with the church-wide study BECAUSE OF BETHLEHEM by Max Lucado. On December 1st, a group will head to Charlotte, NC to work at the Operation Christmas Child warehouse. We will be working an eight hour shift on Saturday (2-10) and will return on Sunday afternoon, just in time for the Advent Supper. There are still spaces if you would like to attend. December 2nd, those youth not attending in Charlotte will be assisting with the decorating of the church. Please meet in the Sanctuary at 9:30am. December 10th will find us enjoying our progressive supper. Thank you to Jill Fletcher, Pam Gaddy, Cari Brown, Heather Junkins and Ashton Kennedy for assisting with this event. It will be an evening of fun, fellowship and caroling. All Youth are to meet at Founders Hall at 5:00pm. December 24th will find our youth assisting with the morning worship. They will usher as well as help the JAM children with their roles in our service. Andria Eddy Youth Director [email protected]

CHILDREN’S CHURCH VOLUNTEER

The Christian Education Team is re-questing volunteers to help with Chil-dren's Church on Sundays begin-ning December 3rd. No teaching ex-perience is required, just a love for Jesus and his children. All lessons and materials will be planned and provided. We are hoping to have enough volun-teers to rotate one Sunday each month. This is a serious need and without more help, we will no longer be able to provide Children's Church be-ginning in December.

We will receive the Christmas Joy Gift Offering on Sunday, December 24th, dur-ing the Christmas Eve Services. You may place your offering in the specially marked offering envelopes available in the pew racks or mark Joy Gift Offering

in the memo line of your check. The Christmas Joy Gift Offering provides the oppor-tunity for future leaders of the church, from all racial and ethnic backgrounds, to pursue and fulfill their dreams through Presbyterian-related education. The offering also assists families of active and retired church workers to meet unexpected needs through the Assistance Program of the Board of Pensions. Your support of these faithful servants and students in their hour of great need and hour of great promise is invaluable.

BASKERVILL FOOD PANTRY

During this Christmas Season let’s not forget our less fortunate friends who depend on Baskervill Food Pantry for at least a portion of their food. Your canned goods contribution would be a "MAJOR" help!! Please remember to bring your items such as canned vegetables or canned fruit to church on Sunday, December 3rd, and place them in the marked baskets in the narthex.

Happy Holidays, Your Pantry Volunteers

We will conduct a Stephen Ministry class after the first of the year.

memory of that person. There are instructions by the calendar.

The Ministry of a Deacon is Compassion, Witness, and Ser-vice to our church members and to our local and worldwide community. Jesus tended to the sick, the friendless, the hun-gry, and anyone in distress. As Christ is our Shepherd, the Deacon Ministry strives to follow His example by caring for our congregation. In the Shepherd Ministry we do this through sending cards and contacting those who are sick or bereaved. Being a Shepherd is witnessing and sharing the love of Jesus

Christ. This is the primary role of a Deacon but compassion and support to others is the role of all Christians. Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church is your church and you can be a Shepherd to others. Other Deacon responsibilities are: to recruit and train ushers for all worship and special services to coordinate funeral receptions to deliver flower arrangements to the sick or shut-ins to supply and deliver a Bereavement Basket when there has been a death in the family to make certain new members are welcomed and receive name tags to stay abreast of prayer requests and notify Shepherds of special needs to communicate with church members about upcoming events in the life of the church Deacons have accepted the duties and responsibilities willingly, knowing that we do our best to live as Jesus Christ would have us live. When a Deacon calls to ask for your help, please remember the example Christ set for us all. As Jesus loves us, show your love for others. If you have any questions about our Deacon ministries, please contact Jean Monk, Dea-con Chair at 843-314-3183 or Johnna Young, Shepherd Chair at 843-235-0875.

“He tends His flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart;

He gently leads those that have young.” Isaiah 40:11

ADVENT DINNER AND CONCERT

There will be an Advent Dinner and Con-cert on Sunday, December 3rd, at 5:30 PM in the Holsclaw Fellowship Center. The dinner will be sponsored by the Church Life Team and the concert will feature the PIPC Chancel Choir and the Pawleys Island Concert Band. During the concert, the children will be invited to another area of the HFC to make Christmas ornaments. If you plan to attend, contact Tina in the church office at 843-237-4581.

Let's come together and cele-brate "the reason for the season" with a special 4-week Advent Study beginning Sunday, Decem-ber 3rd, at 9:00 AM. Adults and youth will watch Max Lucado's DVD "Because of Bethlehem: Love Is Born, Hope Is Here" together in Holsclaw Fellowship Center.

Afterwards, we will split into smaller groups led by PIPC's Sunday school teachers to share more of this study's message of hope, healing, and God's enduring promises. Be renewed and recharged by Lucado's love of Christmas, his sense of humor, and his focus on the truth that "When Christ was born, so was our hope." Advent lessons for the children will be held at the same time in the Education Building

2017 Advent and Christmas at

Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church “Advent” means “coming” and reflects the anticipation and preparation of God’s children for the coming of the Christ, the Messiah. In the Christian community, Advent is the first season of the church year and liturgically readies the faith community by recalling the long-awaited hope of the prophets and the call for all people of faith to work toward peace and justice and righteousness. The Incarnation of the Word made flesh and Jesus’ proclamation that God’s Realm is at hand was borne out in a love that gave itself sacrificially and a hope that overcame evil and death. That is the promise of Christmas. It is what buoys our hope and energizes our outreach into the world as we seek to understand anew God’s remarkable gift in the birth of Jesus.

The four Sundays prior to Christmas are known as the Sundays of Advent, and each Sunday reflects an em-phasis in the grand story of God’s gracious love and salvation for the world. The First Sunday of Advent focuses on Hope, especially as articulated by the prophets and found in the promise of God to his people for freedom and jus-tice. The Second Sunday of Advent focuses on Peace, and the coming Kingdom of God that will unify the world in a community where friendship and understanding prevail. The Third Sunday of Advent focuses on Joy that comes through God’s intervention on behalf of humanity, and our opportunity to play a role in sharing the Good News of Jesus. The Fourth Sunday of Advent focuses on Love, the fullest expression of God’s redemptive work through Jesus Christ that overcomes sin and death, and reconciles us to God. On Christmas Eve, the birth of Jesus is symbolized by the lighting of the central candle, the Christ Candle, and reflects the light that is breaking into the darkness that sur-rounds us, a light which will never be extinguished.

We anticipate the days around Christmas will be joyful and family-centered, yet the reality as depicted in scripture and as lived out in our daily lives is far different. The birth of Jesus occurs in the most difficult of circum-stances and times, and the coming of Christ addresses the most desperate of human situations. The season of Advent reminds us that God’s love intervenes in the deepest darkness, that the light of Christ shines into our troubled world today, and that God’s people are called to work for peace and hope and justice.

“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:11

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. Luke 2:14

The Book Corner Christmas books are featured in the December book display including these new additions for adults:

Hidden Christmas by Timothy Keller Keller wants people to experience God’s grace in a deeper and more meaningful way – to under-

stand the “hidden” Christmas. I wish I could describe this book with the eloquence the author uses. Admit-tedly, the first chapter (15 pages) describes the darkness of the world and includes some paragraph-long quotations that are not in the most readable style, but KEEP READING! The further I read, the more I loved the book. First Keller explores the gifts God gave us at Christmas, and then he discusses how we can welcome and receive those gifts. Each of his 8 chapters begins with scripture, starting with Isaiah 9:2, 5-7, then continuing with passages from Matthew and Luke, and closing with 1 John 1:1-4. Keller helps us un-derstand each passage, bringing new insights to the scripture. For example, he explains that a genealogy in Jesus’ day was a pedigree – today’s résumé where you put your best foot forward. Yet Jesus’ genealogy includes women, Gentiles, moral outsiders, and moral failures – all of whom can be part of Jesus’ family. Keller discusses the significance of Jesus beginning the seventh seven of generations from Abraham – a foretaste of the final rest we will have when God renews the earth. Because of Christmas, the incarnation, and knowing that Jesus is God, we are given the greatest hope; but Keller also explains why an intimate relationship with Jesus requires courage.

In the chapter “Mary’s Faith,” Keller shares how Luke holds up Mary as a model of what respon-sive faith looks like. He also contrasts a kind of doubt that is the sign of a closed mind and a kind of doubt that is the sign of an open mind. He uses the chapter “The Shepherds’ Faith” to shed insight on how to read the Bible. The last two chapters explore the meaning of Simeon’s words to Mary and John’s explana-tion of what the nativity means.

Especially for those of us who have grown up “knowing” the Christmas story, Keller reminds us of the absolutely joyous, amazing aspect of Christmas that remains hidden to too many.

Because of Bethlehem: Love Is Born, Hope Is Here by Max Lucado This book, which the Adult and Youth Sunday School classes are using in their Advent study, quotes

scripture from a variety of Bible translations, bringing freshness to the wonderful nativity story. Lucado reminds us that “Jesus lifts burdens; he doesn’t add to them.” His humor, such as comparing us to a lean-ing Christmas tree, made me laugh, and his telling of the Christmas story brought new insights. In this book Lucado helps the reader forget the commercialism of Christmas and focus on the truth that “When Christ was born, so was our hope.”

Bible Bookworm Reading Logs Are Due December 10th
