Message to the People...

FROM SOUL 73 to SEOUL KOREA Over the past few days, I have heard similar sentiments as folks decried the

sale of the radio station.Folks wanted to know if the reports were accurate and what should they do.Reflecting back, I remember embracing KKDA upon my arrival to the

Metroplex in 1981. I enjoyed not only the music,but the personalities: Willis Johnson, Lynne Haze, Steve Ladd, Da Wolf, Cousin Linnie, and others. It was Soul 73, where you’ve got a friend!

Little did I know then that almost a decade later I would be offering my commentary, “One African American Woman’s Opinion,” to the KKDA listeners.

Then I joined host Shaun Rabb for the debut of Reporters Roundtable, which very shortly became Reporters Roundtable with Cheryl Smith for the next 22 years, followed by Speak Out with Judge Maryellen Hicks.

Since 1981 I have looked to Soul 73 to provide me with empowering information and the music I “grew up listening to.” People who worked for the station were involved and had their fingers on the pulse of the community.

There was good music, informative talk and late-breaking news. Before any others had broadcast the sale and closure of the Dallas Times Herald, you heard it on KKDA. When it appeared that Dallas was about to be at war, KKDA had the interview with Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price. The station even had ongoing coverage of the OJ Simpson Trial!

Listeners were surprised one Sunday morning when they tuned in to hear the Hon. Min. Louis Farrakhan’s taped message, only to hear him in a live interview with yours truly.

KKDA was so focused on the issues effecting its listeners that it wasn’t uncommon to hear personalities from “rival” stations if they were bringing pertinent information. One of my personal favorite interviews was Radio One and TV One media mogul Cathy Hughes.

I just knew I was going to be shown the door when she gave a “shoutout” to her Radio One Team in Dallas!There are so many pleasant memories I have of my days at KKDA and when changes were made and my microphone

was no longer “live”, I moved on and continued with my program and my life.Over the holidays BET showed Roots and Queen. In addition to watching the TV One special on Django Unchained, I

went to the movie theater to see Jamie Foxx in action. Talk about not wanting to hear excuses and whinings from ANYONE!Does looking at one’s past prepare them for the future? Will we go back to supporting our own? Will we recycle dollars in

our communities?There are some really upset people right now. It will be interesting to see what comes of those emotions.Some look at the

sale of KKDA as a business decision. Hyman Childs is a businessman. He made a business decision to sell the radio station. Now, did he go and seek out African Americans as potential buyers? Should he have? According to one community activist who visited with Mr. Childs at least two months prior to the sale, Mr. Childs told her he had no intentions of selling the station. So people are justifiably upset over the deception.

Do you know anyone ready to put up the $1.9 million? I was asked what the next step should be and should we lead a protest against the sale. Folks are closing ranks to deal with what they consider to be blatant disregard for the Black communities by not only Mr. Childs but the buyers who have historically disenfranchised Black people.

Frederick Douglass said, “Man’s greatness consists in his ability to do and the proper application of his powers to things needed to be done.”

Malcolm X said, “Power never takes a back step only in the face of more power.” Ida B. Wells said, “I had an instinctive feeling that the people who have little or no school training should have something

coming into their homes weekly which dealt with their problems in a simple, helpful way... so I wrote in a plain, common-sense way on the things that concerned our people.”

The Hon. Shirley Chisholm said, “You don’t make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas.”

Dorothy I Height said, “Greatness is not measured by what a man or woman accomplishes, but by the opposition he or she has overcome to reach his goals.”

Maya Angelou said, “Nothing will work unless you do.”Hon. Minister Louis Farrakhan said, “as a youngster I longed to see the Black man free and I longed to see anyone stand up

for us.” As folks ponder the loss of Soul 73 KKDA, as they bemoan the news that SOUL 73 was SOLD to SEOUL; what’s the next

step?The time is always now for accountability and visionary leadership-- not exercises in futility.Let’s move forward from a position of strength--of power. There’s a movement afoot that is really exciting. Stay tuned, or

U.S. Postal Service honors 150th Anniversary ofEmancipation Proclamation

WASHINGTON— With this 2013 stamp, the U.S. Postal Service commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, which President Abraham Lincoln signed on Jan. 1, 1863. To commemorate this milestone, the Postal Service introduced a limited-edition Forever Stamp today at The National Archives in Washington, D.C., which houses the historic document.

The Emancipation Proclamation Forever Stamp goes on sale tomorrow at Post Offices nationwide, and can be purchased online at www.usps.com/stamps or by phone at 800-Stamp24 (800-782-6724).

The Emancipation Proclamation Forever Stamp represents freedom and is the first in a series of three Civil Rights stamps to be released in 2013. The remaining stamps in the series, to be issued later this year, mark enduring moments of courage and equality in the civil rights movement by featuring Rosa Parks and the March on Washington.

“Stamps often tap into our culture and help us remember the events and people who have had an impact on American history,” said Deputy Postmaster General Ronald A. Stroman. “The

Emancipation Proclamation was a powerful symbol of President Lincoln’s determination to end the war, to end slavery, and to reconstruct the economy of the country without slave labor.”

The Emancipation Proclamation stamp is the latest stamp to be issued by the Postal Service in tribute to civil rights events or leaders. In 2009, the organization released stamps featuring 12 civil rights pioneers including Mary Church Terrell and Mary White Ovington, and every year it commemorates notable leaders and cultural milestones through other stamp collections such as the Black Heritage series and the American Treasures series.On August 16, 1963, the Postal Service issued a stamp commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. The stamp was designed by George Olden, who was the first African American to design a U.S. postage stamp.Following today’s stamp dedication by Stroman, Dr.

Bernice Johnson Reagon, musician, song talker and scholar, performed a dramatic reading of the Emancipation Proclamation. The original document was on display at The National Archives for a limited viewing.

MALVEAUX: Where is your passion?I was in a cab just the other day when the driver chided me for not knowing football. He

was a big Redskins (I call them the Deadskins because they need to change their name) fan, and was obsessed with RGIII. I must confess that I did not know who RGIII was until he informed me and told me that I was culturally deficient because I lived in Washington, DC and did not follow football.

I observed his passion as I would poke and probe at a sociological phenomenon. The brother was intense, focused, and annoyed at the fact that somebody, anybody, was not caught up in the football drama. At some point I became silent, to see how long the rant would last. And it lasted through the whole 20 minutes of my ride, through stalled traffic and long lights. The man was on a mission.

I understand that folks have to have valves to release the tension of everyday life. Maybe it’s sports, reading, or music. Still, I wonder if we could ever garner these passions for our children, for their needs, for ways that education can build a path to the future.

I’d be overjoyed if a taxi driver told me that he was so excited about education that he could not move. I’d be thrilled if one of them questioned me about education as intensely as he did about football. I could imagine

the questions. Why are test scores so low?

Why are children not going to college?

Why are so many young black men (and women, but men pose a special set of issues) alienated from the system? What can we do to provide job opportunities for them?

What if someone had passion for our eating habits? Nearly half of the black population is obese because pork, grease, and artificial snacks are staples of some diets. Why don’t we make healthy living a priority and be as passionate about that as we are about football? Why can’t each one teach one about ways to be healthy?

What about housing? As African Americans are being put out of their homes, there have been feeble attempts to modify loans. Those who are working on this have insufficient resources, and just a fraction of those who qualify. Nearly $200 billion of black wealth has been compromised by foreclosures, yet too many are silent about promises unfulfilled.

Shootings in Oregon and Connecticut are heartbreaking manifestations of the violence that pervades in our nation. Anybody with an attitude and a gun can shoot into a crowd and cause major damage. Why have a couple of fools targeted an elementary school in Connecticut leaving dozens dead. Why does the National Rifle Association work so hard to maintain the right to bear arms? Why aren’t more legislators working to limit this so-called right? Why do we continue to leave our population vulnerable to nuts with guns? I’d love to see some passion channeled to this

issue? Why are we okay with these massacres?

I’m not so angry as the football (baseball, basketball) aficionados, but I am concerned that so much passion is channeled in one direction but not in others. The passion for sports is so rabid that I’ve listened to preachers pray for victory for their teams from their pulpits, never mind that those on the opposing team are God’s children too. Can a preacher or two not only throw down on education but also provide vehicles for parishioners to get involved in educating our children?

Passion and intensity are important elements of our lives. Without passion we fade into the periphery, ground down by the minutia of everyday life. Get kids to school, go to work, come home for dinner, and relax. If that isn’t your pattern, you’ve got one, and the only thing that pulls you out of pattern is passion. There is nothing wrong with a passion for football. Can we channel some of that passion, though, that can transform our world by generating safety, education and job opportunities? That’s the kind of passion that could rock our world!Dr. Julianne Malveaux - “the most iconoclastic public intellectual in the country.” - Dr. Cornel West. When the National Rifle Association finally revealed last week what it was willing to do to help curb gun violence in schools, it fired a blank.

“Politicians pass laws for Gun-Free School Zones. They issue press releases bragging about them. They post signs advertising them. And in so doing, they tell every insane killer in America that schools are their safest place to inflict maximum mayhem with minimum risk,” NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre said at a so-called news conference in which he refused to take questions.

As 20 innocent kids, most of them 6-years-old, and six caring adults were being buried last week, the best idea the NRA had to offer was for us to begin arming teachers with guns. That’s the same feeble, ineffective “answer” LaPierre provided five years ago after the Virginia Tech shootings. Instead of making productive suggestions in the aftermath of 26 deaths in Newtown, Conn., LaPierre went on to blame Congress, President Obama, the media, video game manufacturers – everyone but the NRA, which thinks it should be alright for citizens to own an arsenal of automatic weapons.

LaPierre failed to note that many schools already have armed guards on site. Columbine High School, for example, had a two armed policemen stationed in the school in 1999, yet 15 people were killed and 23 injured.

The NRA executive sought to belittle gun-free school safety zones. But Media Matters, the watchdog group, pointed out: “In fact, primary and secondary schools – where firearms are typically prohibited – are much safer environments for young people than the surrounding communities, even taking

into account horrific school shootings. Since the Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics began recording homicides at schools in the 1992-3 school year, the proportion of youth homicides that occurred at school has never exceeded 2 percent of total youth homicides. Suicide was also much more likely to occur away from school.”

It added, “Even gun advocate Gary Kleck noted in his 1997 book Targeting Guns: Firearms and Their Control that “Both gun carrying and gun violence are thus phenomena almost entirely confined to the world outside schools.”

No political rant would be complete these days without an attack on President Obama. And when LaPierre fired at the White House, he was again off target.

In his remarks, LaPierre said, “Ladies and gentlemen, there is no national, one-size-fits-all solution to protecting our children. But do know this president zeroed out school emergency planning grants in last year’s budget, and scrapped ‘Secure Our Schools’ policing grants in next year’s budget.”

What LaPierre neglected to say was the Secure Our Schools policy grants are not the

only source of financing school safety initiatives. In fact, the Department of Education has requested nearly $200 million for its Successful, Safe and Health Schools program.

The NRA official also took aim at video games, listing some by name: “Bulletstorm,” “Grand Theft Auto,” “Mortal Kombat,” “Splatterhouse” and “Kindergarten Killers.”

But Max Fisher wrote in the Washington Post, “Looking at the world’s 10 largest video game markets yields no evident, statistical correlation between video game consumption and gun-related killings.”

While there is no provable link between acts of violence and video games, states with higher gun ownership rates and weak gun laws have the highest rates of gun deaths, according to the Violence Policy Center.

It said in one report, “The analysis reveals that the five states with the highest per capita gun death rates were Louisiana, Mississippi, Alaska, Alabama, and Nevada. Each of these states had a per capita gun death rate far exceeding the national per capita gun death rate of 10.34 per 100,000 for 2007. Each of

the top-ranking states has lax gun laws and higher gun ownership rates.

“By contrast, states with strong gun laws and low rates of gun ownership had far lower rates of firearm-related death. Ranking last in the nation for gun death was Hawaii, followed by Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York.”

Josh Sugarmann, executive director of the Violence Policy Center and a native of Newtown, Conn., said the NRA’s plan to arm teachers won’t work.

“The NRA plan, which cynically allows for the continued sale of the assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines marketed by its gun industry corporate donors has already been tried, and it did not work,” Sugarmann said.

He added, “Now is the time to limit the increasingly lethal firepower available to civilians and halt the sale of military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines. The American people understand that – even if the NRA and the gun industry that helps fund it do not.”

As residents of north Texas we

are privileged to live in one of the most inviting sections of the country. I am frequently asked by others what it is like to live in the place that we proudly call home.

I am delighted each time that I am asked as I am able to speak about our robust economy, the friendliness of our residents, our

abundant open spaces, our world-class museums, the quality of our institutions of higher learning and the inventiveness of our working class and business communities.

One of the things that make us such an exceptional community, I believe, is our public transit system, DART. It transports nearly 230,000 people each day and services a 700-square-mile area.

Public transportation is extremely crucial to our residents who travel to and from work, to those who are on outings with their families, and to tourists who are visiting our region and may not have access to automobiles.

For these and many other reasons I have been a supporter of DART, and am delighted to have played a supportive role in

the U.S. Department of Transportation's recent decision to award a $120 million direct loan to DART so that it might continue the third phase of its light rail Orange Line project.

The Department of Transportation has committed approximately $796 million to DART since 1996. As the highest ranking member of Congress from Texas on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, I insist that our region receives sufficient funding to meet its transportation needs.

And like most things we begin in Texas, I believe that DART will one day become the premier public transportation system in the country. If you have not used it, take a ride and see for yourself!

Last year, Methodist Charlton Medical Center challenged families in Cedar Hill ISD to improve their health through the Heart of the Community Challenge program. This year, the program is expanding to include 100 households in the communities served by Methodist Charlton.

The Heart of the Community Challenge promotes heart disease education and prevention during a 16-week program that encourages the entire family to have fun while improving their overall health. Participants will receive free health screenings before and after the challenge.

Biweekly in-person sessions will include healthy eating tips, cooking and fitness demonstrations, physician speakers, and prizes. The free program is open to all who want to participate.

Methodist Charlton President Jonathan S. Davis, FACHE, says the program was so well-received last year they decided to give more families an opportunity to participate.

“As a hospital serving the community, our goal is to combat the top three health risks in our service

area -- high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking -- with tools for prevention.” The Heart of the Community program is a broader initiative of Methodist Health System to provide programs and services that focus on taking care of the heart.

Last year’s Heart of the Community Challenge was filled with stories of success. Cedar Hill ISD student Casey Martinez shared how she lost weight during the challenge and how much she enjoyed preparing meals with her family. Dr. Chanda McGhee, director of Student Support and Community Services at Cedar Hill ISD, says, “We are thrilled that Methodist Charlton facilitated this program that will help families develop a healthier lifestyle.”

Online registration for Heart of the Community Challenge begins on Jan. 7 and ends when the 100th household is registered.

Dear Gwendolyn: I have gone with my boyfriend for 22 years. For the past 10 years, he has introduced me to a lifestyle of which I was not accustomed. This is the current situation: We have not lived together, but we did stay the weekends at his apartment or either at my apartment. According to my boyfriend, he insists he will not spend his weekends alone, and says he never intends to visit me at the home of my mother. I think I have grown to enjoy his money. You see… he has an illegal profession. However, he refuses to tell me what it is. I believe it may be drugs or thief. NEW YORK—Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) has joined forces with Sigma Gamma Rho, one of the nation’s largest African American sororities, to help build awareness of career possibilities in science, technology, and engineering among girls and parents in the African American community.

Working with local Girl Scout councils around the country, Sigma Gamma Rho’s alumnae chapters have made GSUSA’s Imagine Engineering initiative, funded by the National Science Foundation, a focus of the sorority’s annual National Youth Symposium.

“Girl Scouting and Sigma Gamma Rho have the same goal: to build the nation’s future leaders by helping girls dream big and accomplish much today,” said GSUSA Chief Executive Officer Anna Maria Chávez. “We are delighted to be part of this partnership to help girls do great things in critical fields such as science, technology, engineering and math.”

“Response to Imagine Engineering has been terrific,” said Sigma Gamma Rho National President Bonita Herring. “We surveyed 250 girls who took part in the program, and more than two thirds of them said they now understood how ‘someone like me’ could become an engineer.”

“We will not only expand our efforts with this program, but we will reach

out to girls nationwide in our communities with a combination of our own healthy living program, Project Reassurance, and the Girl Scouts’ program for middle-school girls on healthy relationships and bullying,” Herring said. “Through this continued partnership, we are going to do great things together for girls.”

New Hope Baptist Church to install Pastor

Rev. Dr. Ronald E. Jones has been named Senior Pastor of New Hope Baptist Church. He will serve as the thirteenth Senior Pastor of this historic church, the oldest African American Church in Dallas, Texas entirely organized and owned by Black people.

Rev. Jones served as Interim Pastor on four different occasions and in many other capacities at New Hope prior to being elected as the Senior Pastor. He also serves as the Mayor of the City of Garland, currently serving his third and final term.

He is a dedicated, committed servant of God who has extensive pastoral and leadership experience. There will be several events commemorating the installation of Rev. Dr. Jones and the community is invited to share in the celebration. They include:

Eucalyptus i s an ex t r emely v e r s a t i l e p l a n t . Native to Australia, i t i s m a i n l y cultivated in Brazil and China. The dried leaves were traditionally used in small cloth sachets to perfume linen closets. Dried stems with leaves are often used in vases and baskets alone or in arrangements. The essential oil of e u c a l y p t u s h a s n u m e r o u s applications. Long used as a remedy for cold and flu symptoms, eucalyptus is soothing to sore throats, boosts the immune system, and reduces the spread of many forms of bacteria. It works especially well on the r e s p i r a t o r y s y s t e m w h e n addressing congestion. Under the d i r e c t i o n o f a C e r t i f i e d Aromatherapist, eucalyptus may be combined with other essential oi ls to create an effect ive synergistic blend to approach physical issues, as well as freshen the home. The essential oil of eucalyptus is surprisingly economical. A small bottle can last a long time even with heavy usage. To improve

When I attended the screening of DJANGO UNCHAINED, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Knowing that it was a Quentin Tarantino film set in the 1800’s during the slavery era in America, I knew I would have to brace myself for some pretty brutal violence. Nevertheless, I was anxious to see what the buzz was about. Well, I can honestly say this film was a wild ride and one of the best films I saw in 2012.Written and directed by Academy Award winner Quentin Tarantino, DJANGO UNCHAINED is a fictional, Western story of vengeance and love. Django, played by Academy Award-winning actor Jamie Foxx, is a slave whose freedom is bought by German dentist-turned-bounty-hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz), to assist him in tracking down and identifying Django’s former slave owners, the homicidal Brittle brothers. Once Dr. Schultz frees Django, he offers him what appears to be the opportunity of a lifetime — to join him on his bounty hunting mission to kill slave owners for their criminal offenses and get paid for it. Quite naturally, this offer is like symphony orchestra music to Django’s ears but he in turn presents one stipulation — that after he helps Dr. Schultz find these wanted men, Schultz would help Django locate and rescue his wife, Broomhilda, from her current slave plantation. (Django and Broomhilda had previously been separated as punishment for attempting to run away from another slave plantation). The two men agree and their adventure begins. Before they set out on their first joint mission, Dr. Schultz initiates an

extreme makeover of Django, transforming him from an unacculturated, unsure, illiterate slave to a well-groomed, horseback-riding, sharp shooting bounty hunter with a strong command of the English language and a rather brazen disregard for the status quo in the South. Fast forward through several fatal gun shot wounds and a growing pile of bad guy corpses, and we arrive at the heart of this feature film’s love story. There is absolutely no doubt with the audience that Django loves his wife and will endure anything,

regardless of how unspeakable, to be reunited with her. After, Dr. Schultz and Django track Broomhilda to a wicked plantation known as Candyland, they devise a plan to befriend the plantation’s owner, a contemptuous Francophile named Monsieur Calvin Candie, played by Academy Award nominee Leonardo DiCaprio, to gain access to the plantation and rescue Django’s beloved wife. It is at Candyland where fellow Oscar-nominee Samuel L. Jackson’s butt-kissing, master-pleasing character, Stephen, is introduced. With the help of special effects makeup and a walking cane, we see Jackson on screen as an aged, irascible curmudgeon who we end up hating by the end of the film because of his character’s role in exposing Django and Schultz’s scheme to Candie. Right when the audience is ready to applaud a passionate, emotional reunion between Django and Broomhilda, the script is flipped, literally, and all hell breaks loose. Just as all hope seems lost and the lives of the unlikely duo are at stake,

the film’s climax commences with the obligatory, cringe-worthy blood bath that we’ve come to love (or hate depending on your tolerance level for graphic violence) in Tarantino’s work. With a lengthy running time of two hours and 45 minutes, the engaging story provides a couple of last minute twists that lead viewers to what feels like the end of the film but, alas, the story takes you in a different direction before it actually fades to closing credits. However, you will have to see the film for yourself to see how the story ends

and whether Django gets his wife back. DJANGO UNCHAINED is an entertaining action/adventure film that though it is set against the backdrop of slavery in America’s southern states and deals with a very serious atrocity in this nation’s history as it relates to the sub-human treatment of African Americans from the time they were brought against their

will to America until President Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery in 1863, I was able to watch the film and enjoy it purely as art.

Nothing more. Nothing less. And as great films often do, it took me through a range of emotions as

there were scenes that made my eyes water, scenes that made me chuckle and scenes that furrowed my brows.I watched the film with an open mind and did not enter the theater with a chip on my shoulder or anger in my heart about slavery and I quite frankly was so enthralled with the parallel storylines about vengeance and true love that I was not focused on how many times the “n” word was spoken, perhaps because I recognize that the reality of that era is that the “n” word WAS used frequently by slave owners. Period. Being ticked off about it is not going to undo history. As a matter of fact, because of the origins of the “n” word, I am more appalled at the frequent use of the word in modern-day films depicting gang violence and Black-on-Black crime than in a period piece such as DJANGO UNCHAINED. By and large, Tarantino’s writing and directing skills in this film are in a word — extraordinary (evident by its recent five Golden Globe nominations) and whether his goal was to simply entertain or to start a conversation about slavery and its effects, he can pat himself on the back and consider his mission accomplished. DJANGO UNCHAINED is rated R for strong graphic violence throughout, a vicious fight, language and some nudity. It opened in theaters across the U.S. on

December 25, 2012.

Naturally Divine Beauty invites the public to its grand opening celebration Saturday January 26, 2012 11:00 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 3556 Forest Lane in Dallas TX. This daylong event will feature product demonstrations, live music and talks by real women who have made a successful transition from chemically treated to natural hair. Participants can learn about new

products and styles while enjoying tasty hors d'oeuvres and wine. Audra Cooper opened the store to address the new high demand for products suited for natural hair.“Natural hair is not a fad, it’s a choice,” said Ms. Cooper, the owner of Naturally Divine Beauty. The popularity of natural hairstyles has spawned a crop of specialty beauty parlors throughout the region, and shifted the economic balance of the $185 million black hair-care market. Cooper moved the store to its new location from a kiosk at Grapevine Mills Malls after the space became too small to handle the increase demand for products. The 1,500 square foot store and salon is a beauty boutique filled with carefully selected high-end products made by African-American owned companies popping up to meet the high

demands of natural products made specifically for natural hair. The salon offers an array of services including Twist Outs, Creative Cuts, Flat Irons, Blow outs and more! Naturally Divine has over 25 options of natural hair care and beauty products. Most products are sulfate-free, alcohol-free, paraben-free, and free of harsh chemicals. Women with relaxed and naturally textured hair can use the products. Some product brands include, Carol’s Daughter, Kinky Curly, Uncle Funky’s Daughter, Curly Junkie, Mixed Chicks and many more.Ms. Cooper has joined a growing number of African-American-owned companies
