Thank you, as always, to our dedicated K-5 parent volunteers. In addition to the support you provided for the children, who are always so happy to see you in the library, thousands of books were shelved. We couldn’t have done it without you. thanks! in honor of our parent volunteers read! HRS LOWER SCHOOL SUMMER READING 2012 Summer Reading This year in the Lower School library, students have: completed online research found just right books played library Lingo! solved mysteries folded origami and airplanes learned how to write a bibliography participated in the California Young Reader Medal award Now, we are all ready for some great summer reads! A big theme in the library in 2011-12 has been thinking about WHY we like the books we like, putting a rhyme and reason to our opinions about literature. So we made the summer reading list in a new way. This year, kids put their favorite books into categories describing the “why” behind the love. Some interesting trends came out of the new breakdown. Harry Potter appears in different categories: for younger kids it’s “scary” and for older kids it’s “adventurous.” Realistic fiction is the sole purview of older elementary kids. And everybody still loves Where’s Waldo. As always, some titles are serious award winners. Other titles are “just for fun.” There is something for everyone. You’ll be able to find most of these books at your local public library. Don’t forget to join their summer reading programs for reading incentives and community connections. Happy reading and have a wonderful summer! !HRS LOWER SCHOOL SUMMER READING 2012

Summer ReadingThis year in the Lower School library, students have:

• completed online research• found just right books• played library Lingo!• solved mysteries• folded origami and airplanes• learned how to write a

bibliography• participated in the California

Young Reader Medal award

Now, we are all ready for some great summer reads! A big theme in the library in 2011-12 has been thinking about WHY we like the books we like, putting a rhyme and reason to our opinions about

literature.

Other titles are “just for fun.” There is something for

everyone. You’ll be able to find most of these books at your local public library. Don’t forget to join their summer reading programs for reading incentives and community connections. Happy reading and have a wonderful summer!

K-5 HighlightsKindergarten and 1st Grade worked on location, location, location. They worked hard on finding their way to their just right books. Second graders read and analyzed multicultural stories and even brought in their own books to share.Third graders learned the reasons for citing their sources and created their first bibliographies for their animal reports. Fourth graders began mastering NoodleTools, an online bibliography creation tool. They read legends and tall tales; and they explored new ways to use the library.Fifth graders worked hard on research skills in library and computer class for several reports. They studied keyword searching, website evaluation, and online research strategies .
