THE I LIKE MYSELF WORKSHEET

The I Like MyselfWorksheet

In the Text the Romance Back program manual, I introduce the I LikeMyself Game. Even though the I Like Myself Game isn’t a cool textingformula or done-for-you text, it’s easily one of the most popular sectionsof the program (I get tons of comments and emails on it) and is thesingle most important exercise you can do to improve your relationships, improve your self esteem and improve your life.

Like I say in the manual, nobody can love you if you don’t love yourself.

So here’s what I want you to do:

Print up this worksheet and go through it step by step. Really focuson your positive attributes, and if you’re having trouble coming up withgood things to say about yourself use some of the examples below forinspiration.

Step 1: Brainstorm

In the space below, list out what you ACTUALLY like about yourself. Noediting here, no hemming and hawing, no using wiggle words and noacting like there’s NOTHING you like about yourself. Just list out theactual things about yourself you like. Make sure you have at least onething in each of the following categories:

Physical: (Ass, eyes, stomach, legs, hair, smile, skin, arms. There mustbe SOMETHING.) Note: For this exercise you’re NOT allowed to qualifywhat you like (“I like my butt, but I wish it were a little smaller.”).

Personality: (Sense of humor, kindness, loyalty, inquisitiveness, drive, ambition, how you never give up.)

Accomplishments: (What are you PROUD of yourself for? Graduatingcollege, raising 3 kids, surviving an awful relationship, being an amaz-ing chess player, whatever.)

THE I LIKE MYSELF WORKSHEET

Jenny is a 38 years old, divorced, struggling financially and wonderingif she’ll ever find the perfect guy.

She grabs Text the Romance Back as a way to get the romance and loveshe’s wanted for so long. When she reads the I Like Myself Game sectionof the manual she feels like she’s going to have a PANIC ATTACK. In herwhole life, she’s almost never THOUGHT anything nice about herself, let alone actually said it or written it down.

She prints up the I Like Myself Game worksheet, grabs a pen, but feelsabsolutely paralyzed at first.

Then, after a glass of wine, right before she goes to bed, she FORCESherself to actually sit down and play the game.

First she does the Brainstorm section. When she tries to think aboutwhat she likes about herself physically, it’s REALLY hard. All she canthink is how she wishes she was 15 pounds thinner. How she’s notas pretty as her sister. How she doesn’t look like those girls in themagazines.

But then a weird thing starts to happen. All those negative thoughtsstart sounding kind of silly, and even though it’s hard, she starts listingthings out:

She writes down:

My smile. I like seeing my smile in pictures. My hair. It’s long and dark and straight. My eyes. I like the color of my eyes.My butt. I’ve got an ass on me.

And from there it gets kind of fun.

Next, Jenny moves on to Personality traits. This is actually a little easierto do.

She writes down:

I’m tough. I’m a survivor. Nothing destroys me.I’m incredibly loyal to my friends. I never abandon someone I love.I always try to make my friends and family laugh.I’m honest. I never lie.

Finally, Jenny works on her Accomplishments. Jenny’s not making asmuch money as she’d like and with the bad economy, her career isn’twhere she wants it to be, but she writes down:

I was the first one in my family to graduate college.I kept my job even when everyone around me was getting laid off.I came out of my marriage stronger than I went in.

And from there she just keeps going. It’s kind of addicting just writingthis stuff down.

What I’ve Accomplished:

Step 2: Write a Third Person Narrative AboutWhat You Like About Yourself

Now you just need to take all those good things you wrote out aboutyourself and turn them into a short, third person narrative.

You want to start your narrative with “I like YOUR NAME, I really do. . . ”

For example:

Jenny finishes writing brainstorming and has a WHOLE BUNCH of stuffon the paper in front of her. It’s weird, but it’s pretty hard to rememberwhy she was down on herself so hard before doing this. Following theinstructions, she takes a deep breath and starts writing out a few shortparagraphs about what she likes about Jenny. She writes it in the thirdperson, because it’s MUCH easier to do and because it sends a littlethrill through her whole body.

She writes:

I like Jenny, I really do. I like that Jenny is tough. She’s a survivor. She’sbeen through hell in her life, but she doesn’t let it get her down and shedoesn’t let it stop her from loving every day. I like Jenny’s smile. It’s wide

and genuine and spreads across her entire face. I like Jenny’s eyes, thesly look she gets when she’s thinking of something and the way theysparkle when she’s having a good time.

I like how loyal Jenny is. I like how Jenny would give anything to herfriends and family and how there’s never any question if she’ll be therewhen somebody needs her.

I like Jenny’s ass. I like how men can’t help but notice when she walksinto the room.

I like that Jenny’s not afraid of hard work. She’s busted her butt to getwhere she is and she’s going to go much further from here.

I like Jenny a lot. In fact, I totally love her. She’s awesome.

In the space below write out your own I Like Myself Game. . .

I like , I really do. . . .

Step 3: Put Your I Like Myself Game Some-where You Can Read It Every Day When YouWake Up.

Jenny takes her “I Like Myself Game” and puts it up in her bathroom, taped to the mirror. The next morning she wakes up a little stressed andfrazzled, but when she sees that piece of paper on the mirror she makesherself stop and read it. . . and suddenly she thinks of more stuff aboutherself she really likes.

And that’s it.

I’ve had HUNDREDS of people (men too, by the way. Guys, you’re notoff the hook. Get over being cool.) play this game and it always strikesme what a profound effect it has.

In fact, I want to hear YOUR I Like Myself game. Do me a favor and sendit to [email protected].

I promise I won’t share it with anybody without your permission =-).
