G O D I S B L E S S I N G O U R C H U R C H Heartland Church began in our living room in 2001 with just 17 people,

including kids. Today we’re a church of 3,000+ people meeting in multiple

locations. Over 1,500 people have been baptized and 7 new churches have

been launched out of Heartland Church since we began. We reached over

4,000 people during last year’s Christmas services!

For the last 13 years we’ve witnessed the stories of changed lives...one life af-

ter another telling how the people of Heartland Church sacrificed time, energy

and resources to love them well; how that investment in their life earned trust;

how through being loved they were led into a transforming relationship with

Jesus Christ; and now they too are launching out to love others well. They’ve

been loved well, led up, and launched out! This is what God has called His

church to do, and we’ve answered the call and said, “Yes!”

T H E T I M E I S U R G E N TWe have reached capacity in all our environments at optimum times. We are

out of space at our 96th street location with 5 services. Parking is at capacity!

Our HSE Campus has grown 100% in three years. At that rate of growth, we

can clearly project when we will be out of room.

funding 5 strategic initiatives in 3 missional locations over the next 24 months.

To stay ON MISSION we need to launch more services and more leaders in

more locations. If we run out of space, we are OFF MISSION. We’ve always

existed for people who are not here yet! Heartland Church was launched be-

cause everything is broken! People, relationships, marriages, families, human

equity, even our planet! The signs of the times give us great urgency to love

people well, to lead as many people to Jesus as we can, while we can.

I am Scott Perry and I was lost for 35 years.

My God was money and I feared if I got close

to God, He would take it away. I worried,

stressed, planned and invested to get more. I

measured whom I was by how much financial

wealth I accumulated.

When a friend told my wife, Mindy, and I

about Heartland Church, Mindy attended and

I went with her the next week. After a life

saving cup of coffee with Pastor Darryn,

I accepted Christ on January 12th, 2002.

A little while later, I was baptized. My baptism

was not just a fresh start, I felt launched like

a rocket. I had a new and deeply meaningful

purpose for my life.

Some of the biggest changes in my life were

that Mindy and I wanted our daughters,

Ashley and Angela, to know the love of God.

I feel a deep internal satisfaction when I help

and give to others. I am positively impacting

other people’s lives! This is the real treasure

in heaven. I try to worship God in every-

thing I do, and I realize when I rely on God

the results are far better than I could have

imagined. I want to share my story and bring

people to know Christ and I still feel God is

celebrating my changed life!

Chris and I were

both raised in single

parent homes by

mothers that were

relatively poor.

We went away to college and began to

acquire credit card debt along with student

loans, and car payments. When we got mar-

ried we had seven credit cards, four student

loans, and two car notes. This amounted to

more than $60k. And when we began having

kids we went into further debt. In all, we need-

ed to pay off over $90k in debt!

Chris heard about Financial Peace University

on the radio and was immediately hooked.

Dave’s basic humorous approach to getting

out of debt spoke to him. He came home, told

me about what he had heard and actually took

Dave’s advice and put my credit cards on ICE

so I couldn’t get to them!

We both jumped in with two feet and came up

with what we like to call a “No Matter What”

attitude. We decided that no matter what we

would not go back into debt and would ensure

that our children knew and understood how to

live DEBT FREE.

Our debt of nearly $100k took 5 years to pay

off. Here’s how we did it: We put God first,

tithed faithfully and lived on a budget to help

keep us on track.

Free people, free people! We feel that God has

positioned us to be free to do whatever he

leads us to do. When you are not saddled with

high amounts of debt you’re able to do so

much more for his glory.

Alignment, Speed, Focus!These strategic initiatives enable us to fulfill our mission, with greater speed at a fraction of the cost - specifically by not losing critical momen-tum in growth, farming critical leadership for the future, continuing to give generously into our community and world, without leveraging our future with overwhelming debt.

1. A Practical Reason:It defines what can be counted on. Our

A look at one family’s commitment to increased giving...

We retired in May of 2011 and we knew it

would be the beginning of a new chapter in

our lives. We set out to find a church home.

We wanted to fit somewhere!

Upon our first visit to Heartland, we felt loved

and accepted. There were people like us. We

loved that it was a multi-generational church!

We fit here!

We loved that Heartland is committed to

home groups and we joined one right away.

We now host one in our home and we get to

love on people and we’re loved in return!

We will never forget, Pastor Darryn asked 250

people to leave the 96th Street campus to

make room for an influx of new people. We

accepted the challenge and began to attend

the HSE campus.

We love that he is not afraid to teach on gen-

erosity! We have been challenged to increase

our faith and giving! We’ve already made our

commitment and turned in our card for the L3

initiative.

We love our church! We have each found a

place of purpose and passion at Heartland!

with God, I basically abandoned

my faith once I went to college.

After I got married and we had our first child my

wife literally told me “we are going to raise this

child in the church and you are going to take us.”

We walked in the door of Heartland Church and

my life was never the same. I gave my life to Christ

6 months later and was baptized in January 2007

Jesus began to transform my life! I became more

patient. I was a better husband and father. But the

main area that I struggled with was finances. That

was MY money and I had worked hard for it! But

God was so patient with me. But I knew that in or-

der for me to grow spiritually, I was going to have

to let go. So I made the decision to start tithing.

I would like to say immediately I was a “cheerful giv-

er” but that would just be dishonest. Then I bumped

my tithe from the net to the gross and it was a fairly

substantial amount; especially that first check.

It was the largest giving check I had ever written in

my life and now I am sitting at my desk, opening

up bills and paying, what seemed to be abnor-

mally high invoices. I get about halfway down

the stack of bills and I saw an envelope that said,

“Important Tax Information Enclosed.” I thought to

myself, “here we go; what now?” I opened that en-

velope and found a letter explaining that the state

of Indiana had recently capped property taxes at

1% of the assessed value and that I had an overage

in my escrow account because of it. Within that

envelope was a check and the amount of that

check equated to the EXACT difference between

the net and the gross of my tithe check earlier that

week to the penny.

I prayed to God for more faith, and he blew me

away! We gave God the opportunity to show us

how big He was, and He has given us so much

more! It is the craziest thing and I have found that

being generous has done more to show people

the love of God than anything else I do!

Have you ever missed a boat or train? Remember the helpless and hopeless feeling of standing there watching it as it moves away

from you getting smaller and smaller? It was not that you were moving but you felt like you were moving backwards. This is the

same feeling we get when we miss out on what God is doing. The good news is that he has a train for you and he does not want you

to miss it!

There is only one way to follow God and that is by faith. Without faith it is impossible to please God (Heb 11:6). One thing we know

about following God is that it is never passive. It is always active. And because it is active there is something required of you.

It takes courageous faith to trust God and take him at his word. This attitude of obedience always leads to change. You cannot stay

the same when you follow God by faith. When you are moving forward by faith God moves and creates in you new desires and he

puts you in situations and circumstances to demonstrate his power in and through your life. All of this activity leads you to a place of

sacrificial commitment of your heart to God.

Many of us have experienced this cycle of spiritual growth over the course of our lives. For others this may be the first time you have

been faced with such a challenge. That feeling of fear and intimidation is normal, but please know that you have people around you

that love you and care for you. They are praying for you even now.

Over the next five weeks we are going to explore together this notion of following God by faith. Together we will study a passage of

scripture and focus our attention on one specific question:

said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide: 2 “Moses my servant is dead.

Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan

River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites. 3

I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised

Moses. 4 Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and

from the great river, the Euphrates—all the Hittite country—to the

Mediterranean Sea in the west. 5 No one will be able to stand against

you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you;

I will never leave you nor forsake you. 6 Be strong and courageous,

because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their

ancestors to give them.

7 “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my

servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the

left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Keep this Book

of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that

you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be

prosperous and successful. — Joshua 1:1-8

We love great stories — epic stories. In particular, we

love stories of overcoming. There is something about the

drama of facing enormous odds with unwavering fortitude

that does something to us. We resonate with the exuber-

ant triumph of courageous faith and the sense of signif-

icance. It is how God created us. Ephesians 2:10 tells us

that, “... we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus

for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that

we would walk in them.”

See, we were created to accomplish the grandness of

God’s work. Not only that, we were created in a certain

way to be a unique and integral part of God’s work. As

you read this, realize that God created you in a way that

no one else was created. You are absolutely and unequiv-

ocally unique. Your uniqueness exists by God’s design for

God’s wondrous, extravagant purposes. That is the part of

our story that we love — the triumph and victory.

In our text the people have returned to the outskirts of the

Promised Land. Once again the people of Israel are at the

crossroads of faith. God speaks to Joshua about the tre-

mendous faith step that he is to undertake. He can either

believe that God will do what He has already promised to

do or he can shrink back as their fathers did.

After re-establishing His will for the people of Israel God

uses the following phrase of exhortation three times in

four verses: “Be strong and courageous.” The point is

that God doesn’t sugarcoat the truth that following Him

will require more from Joshua than he has ever needed

before. It’s going to require much. It’s going to require

great strength. It will find Joshua in predicaments that

would seek to dismay him, frighten him or make his knees

go weak.

When we agree to follow God in faith, embarking on a

journey that will require us to be stretched in ways God

has never stretched us before, we absolutely must stay in

the Bible so that we know what God would have us to do.

Then we can yield ourselves to apply what the Bible tells

us. Failure to do so short-circuits the entire journey. We

cannot avoid having God’s Word in our lives. It is abso-

lutely irreplaceable (2 Tim 3:16)!

G R O W5 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,

the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who

were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belong-

ing to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat

down and taught the people from the boat.

4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep

water, and let down the nets for a catch.”

5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t

caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that

their nets began to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other

boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full

that they began to sink.

8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away

from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” 9 For he and all his companions were

astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and

John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.

Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for

people.” —Luke 5:1-10

What if God wanted to use your life for something great that

you couldn’t fully understand now? Would you be interested?

The truth of the matter is that He absolutely does want to

do that. He went as far as to create you specifically for that

purpose and calls you to it.

See, many people reserve the idea of a “call” for those whom

God has given a public ministry, like Billy Graham, Mother

Teresa, or the pastor at their local church. This problem is

vocalized as “but I’m just an ordinary, run of the mill person.

I’m not like them.” The tragic result of this deception is the

dismissal of the truth that God works through all of his people

(1 Cor. 12).

Notice the flow of Simon’s call. At the beginning of his

encounter with Jesus, Simon is merely asked to change the

normal flow of his life somewhat to be obedient to what Jesus

asked of him. Specifically, just get back in his boat and take

Jesus out a little way from shore. Once Simon had agreed to

serve in that way, he listened to Jesus teach him. He gained

deeper insight from his personal encounter with Him. Then,

after He finished teaching, Jesus asks Simon to do something

that required more of him. Simon had to row his boat out into

the middle of the Sea of Galilee and fish with freshly cleaned

nets. Building on what he had just learned about Jesus,

Simon agreed again citing his foundation of Jesus’ authority

for the decision. The power of God manifested itself in such a

mighty way that Simon is brought to his knees in worship and

amazement, which readied him for the next level of his call.

Before we miss this point, we should note that Simon had no

idea what he was getting himself into. All he knew was that

Jesus was the One to be followed and that he would give up

whatever it cost to do so. What Simon understood was that

whatever it meant to be a fisher of men, if Jesus was asking

him to do it, it would be too grand to be missed.

The people in those boats on the Sea of Galilee -- on that day

when Jesus climbed into Simon’s boat -- were just ordinary

men going about their jobs like they did every day. But God

had a purpose for their lives. The way they discovered that

purpose was by saying yes to the promptings of Jesus, in

small ways at first. The truth is God has a call on your life and

He wants you to know what it is. The way you find it is by

beginning to say “yes” to His promptings.

no trouble for me to write the same things to you again, and it is a

who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus, and who put

no confidence in the flesh— 4 though I myself have reasons for such

Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the

Christ. 8 What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the

surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake

I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that

comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the

righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. 10 I want

to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and par-

ticipation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so,

somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.

12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at

my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took

hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have

taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and

straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the

prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

15 All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things.

And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make

clear to you. 16 Only let us live up to what we have already attained. —

Philippians 3:1-16

“Home” is a powerful concept. It connotes the idea of the

place where we most belong, the place that we most inti-

mately fit. By the time we reach adulthood, we might have

had several homes. The idea of “home” has to do as much

with the people and experiences involved in the core of our

lives as it does an actual geographic location.

Why emphasize what “home” means? It is because believ-

ers in Jesus Christ must undergo a home reorientation. Our

home is not here, but in eternity with Christ. That means our

entire understanding of our lives has to change. The ethics

by which we live have to change. Many things we value most

prior to our salvation must change once we accept Christ as

our Savior.

This text is crucial for understanding how a relationship with

Christ changes our worldview. Here Paul unfolded the exam-

ple of his own life as one the Philippians should follow. See,

Paul was a Pharisee, which would have put him in the most

religious and righteous category of Jewish men. The people

resonated with Paul’s background. But then something

curious and foreign happened to the mentality of the people

in Philippi.

Paul relinquishes all that was important to the people. The

word for rubbish cannot be translated strongly enough. Paul re-

garded whatever earthly acclaim he had earned as a detriment

to his knowing Christ. In other words, his priorities changed

because his worldview changed at the point of his salvation.

The point is that his whole view of his real “home” changed.

The realization of our true home has present and future

implications. For Paul the implications transformed the goals

of his entire life. Now he worked to please God and to know

Him more fully in everything that he did. It reframed the way

he thought of his purpose. If it is true that our home deter-

mines our core values, then recognizing that our true home

is in heaven has as its natural outflow a revision of our core

values — those things that we absolutely must do.

Understandably, when we grasp hold of the fact that heaven

is our home — our eternal destination — it changes our be-

havior. This is not a transformation that we can bring about

in our own doing, but one that happens under the direction

of the Holy Spirit. When that happens, honestly, some on-

lookers are not going to understand it. Living in such a way

that disregards the temporal glories of this world in favor of

the eternal reward promised by Jesus will be distinctive in our

culture. But, knowing what lies beyond this world, that heav-

en awaits those in Christ, the Christ follower can do no other.

G R O W22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to

the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. 23 As

they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that

the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.

24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re

going to drown!”

He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm sub-

sided, and all was calm. 25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples.

In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He

commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

—Luke 8:22-25

As we think about following God by faith and being

stretched, without a doubt adversity will find us when we

begin to obey and follow Christ with boldness. However,

in the midst of following in obedience, the power of God

draws us to new levels of intimacy with him.

In our text the disciples are in a boat crossing the Sea

of Galilee. Due to the geography of the area it was not

uncommon at all that there were storms on the sea. Winds

would frequently blow in and raise havoc on the body of

water. But this storm blew up so quickly and violently that

it became a life- threatening situation.

Ironically several of the disciples were fishermen who

made their living on the Sea of Galilee. They were ex-

tremely familiar with that body of water, including weather

patterns, and knew that this storm was different. It was so

powerful that it sent them running to where Jesus slept.

They were dreadfully aware that left to their own devices,

they would perish.

The wording used in Luke implied that there were evil forc-

es stirring this storm. It was the equivalent of a spiritual

sucker punch for Jesus’ followers. They awakened Jesus,

calling Him “Master.” Jesus rebuked the storm, as He had

done to so many unclean spirits before this moment. A

brief display of his power and authority results in his peace

replacing their panic.

Having vanquished the storm, Jesus asks one convicting

question: “Where is your faith?” The disciples are absolute-

ly astonished at what just happened. Not only that, but in

their amazement, they realize that while Jesus may look

like them, eat like them and talk with them, He is definitely

someone much different than them. His power and wis-

dom exceed their ability to explain or comprehend.

Why is this particular passage of Scripture important for us

as we consider how we are called to follow God? First, in

order for us to follow God and think in terms of what God

might want to do through our individual lives, we need to

become reacquainted with the magnitude of the power of

God. Second, when we begin obeying God and seeking

to live our lives for eternal purposes instead of our own

purposes, we will likely run into situations that require us to

lean on His power in faith. Third, as we prayerfully consid-

er what God is calling each of us to do over the next two

years we need to understand the power of the One who

will take what we offer to Him, multiply it for His purposes,

and continue the work for His glory.

He summoned the elders, leaders, judges and officials of Israel, and they

presented themselves before God.

2 Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel,

says: ‘Long ago your ancestors, including Terah the father of Abraham and

Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River and worshiped other gods. 3 But

I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the Euphrates and led

him throughout Canaan and gave him many descendants. I gave him Isaac, 4 and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. I assigned the hill country of Seir to

Esau, but Jacob and his family went down to Egypt.

5 “‘Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I afflicted the Egyptians by what I did

there, and I brought you out. 6 When I brought your people out of Egypt,

you came to the sea, and the Egyptians pursued them with chariots and

horsemen as far as the Red Sea.7 But they cried to the Lord for help, and

he put darkness between you and the Egyptians; he brought the sea over

them and covered them. You saw with your own eyes what I did to the

Egyptians. Then you lived in the wilderness for a long time.

They fought against you, but I gave them into your hands. I destroyed them

laam son of Beor to put a curse on you. 10 But I would not listen to Balaam,

so he blessed you again and again, and I delivered you out of his hand.

11 “‘Then you crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho. The citizens of

Jericho fought against you, as did also the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites,

Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites, but I gave them into your hands. 12 I sent the hornet ahead of you, which drove them out before you—also

the two Amorite kings. You did not do it with your own sword and bow. 13

So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities you did not build;

and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did

not plant.’

14 “Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the

gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt,

and serve the Lord. 15 But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then

choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your

ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in

whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve

the Lord.”

16 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake the Lord to serve

other gods! 17 It was the Lord our God himself who brought us and our par-

ents up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery, and performed those great

signs before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all

the nations through which we traveled. 18 And the Lord drove out before us

all the nations, including the Amorites, who lived in the land. We too will

serve the Lord, because he is our God.”

19 Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord. He is a

holy God; he is a jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your

sins. 20 If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring

disaster on you and make an end of you, after he has been good to you.”

21 But the people said to Joshua, “No! We will serve the Lord.”

22 Then Joshua said, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have

chosen to serve the Lord.”

“Yes, we are witnesses,” they replied.

23 “Now then,” said Joshua, “throw away the foreign gods that are among

you and yield your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.” 24 And the people

said to Joshua, “We will serve the Lord our God and obey him.”

25 On that day Joshua made a covenant for the people, and there at

Shechem he reaffirmed for them decrees and laws. 26 And Joshua recorded

these things in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and

set it up there under the oak near the holy place of the Lord.

27 “See!” he said to all the people. “This stone will be a witness against us. It

has heard all the words the Lord has said to us. It will be a witness against

you if you are untrue to your God.”

Life is full of rites of passage — those life-stage specific

events that signify our transition to a new level of maturity.

All of them require something of us. Things like graduations,

new jobs, marriage and having babies all require a measure of

sacrificial commitment.

The book of Joshua chronicles the nation of Israel follow-

ing the leading and strength of God in taking the Promised

Land. Continually the people of Israel saw the power of God

intervene on their behalf, giving them victory in ways that

could only be explained by His favor and promise. Finally, as

Joshua was preparing to die he addresses the people for the

last time. He reminds them of God’s faithful provision before

leading them to renew their covenant with God.

Notice that Joshua actually seems to attempt to talk the

people out of making a commitment with God. He reminds

them that God is holy and jealous. If the people slip into

idolatry it would result in severe consequences. Nevertheless,

the people would not relent. Why would Joshua speak to

them in such a manner after reminding them of the goodness

of God? Because Joshua wanted them to understand with

accuracy and precision the gravity of the covenant they were

about to make. They weren’t just buying a home, a used car

or even agreeing to raise a child. They were entering into a

covenant of mutual faithfulness with the one true God.

We find ourselves in a similar place as the Israelites who

heard Joshua’s final address. We stand on the precipice

of making a new commitment to God and starting a new

chapter in our relationship with Him. As a church family, we

stand at the beginning of the next chapter in our multi-eth-

nic, multi-generational, multiplying ministry. But being a

part of that next chapter, just like Joshua’s challenge to the

people, means that each of us must make our own decision.

Make no mistake, your decision is at its core a spiritual issue.

Prayerfully, it is our great desire for the world to be changed

because the hearts of our people are changed first.

Because of the nature of the commitment we are asking

everyone to make, it should not be entered into lightly. Your

decision should be thoroughly examined in prayer followed by

wholehearted obedience. The commitment card that you turn

in will serve as your written decision. Further, you should have

some tangible object – in a place you frequently see—that

reminds you of how you plan to live out your commitment to

God. It will remind you that you are in that commitment with

God -- who has so richly blessed you already -- and that you

are following God and moving forward by faith!
