IS SUIOIDE EPIDEMIC P

Hardly a day goes by without we

read the report of a suicide and thecoroner is a very busy man Whatis the reason of this frightful increase in suicide all over the worldIs the theory often advanced thatsuicidal mania is epidemic oorreatIt appears to be because wheneyera suioide ooours it is generally followed by others who make up theirminds to take the short route out ofthe world

Tho increase in the number ofsuioides iu the United States is

alarming The majority of thesuioides occur in the largo citiesand is claimed to be the result ofthe nervouB striving of modern lifeWe quote the following figures fromthe Argonaut In tho last thirtyyears the number of suioides infourteen large oities was 28563The ratio has increased from 87per million in 1870 to 205 perper million in 1898 The total num-

ber¬

of suicides throughout theoountry last year was 6755 an over-age

¬

of 88 per million twenty yearsago the proportion was less thnone half of this or 42 per million

The death rate by suicide is far inexcess of the increase of populationand the subject furnishes some in-

teresting¬

material for thought andinvestigation

In Great Britain the attempt tocommit suicide is an offense in theeyes of the law but it does not ap-

pear¬

that a noticeable decrease iuthe number of suicides baa occurredthrough punishing those who wantto kill themselves and are rescuedIn most cases however a resouedsuicide never tries again to take hislife and the authorities places himin the custody of people who for atime will watch him and where hismental faculties can be observedand examined

We suggest that the Young MensReBearob Olub take up the questionfor debate It may be a morbidsubject but atthe rate we are goingnow it is a question whioh has avery disquieting aspeot

TOPICS OF THE DAY

It would have been in the interestof the taxpayers if the Dole juntahad settled the claims for damagesof tho foreigners who were wronglyimprisoned in 1895 when thoseclaims woro first presented throughthe respective governments of themen falsely cast into jail A com ¬

promise might have been effectedthen but as the money is not tooomn out of the private pockets ofthe Dole coterie it was of courseindifferent to them what amountsthe taxpayers would bo called uponto pay Mr Dole has beoomo sostrongly ipbued with the idea thatno notice should be taken of thorights of men who do not belong tothe sacred circle of the sugar ba ¬

rons Ho cannot understand that a

foroignor sojourning hero may bonobody in tho oyes of his oliquo

booailso he does not own any sugarstocks and yet be somebody withhis own government which does notgauge a mans standing by hiswealth The United States is anxioiiB to enter into a treaty with Den ¬

mark in regard to St Thomas andSt Jau It is not likely that theDanish Government will be anxiousto sign suoh a treaty if the UnitedStates should put its Btamp of ap-

proval¬

on the gross violation of theDanish Hawaiian treaty perpetratedin re Edmund Norrie in 1895 Itwill take Borne very clever expertsto explain that incident and MessrsDole Go will have to commitsome tall perjury if they wish toconnect the Danish and Portugueseclaimants with the emeute of 1895

It is pleasing to us however thatMr Dole through his narrow-mindednes- s

and pig headedne8s is havingau unpleasant quarter of an hour

The Independent is not auxious tosoo the segregation laws repealedbut it is decidedly opposed to seethe lepers treated by the familycompact and its organ as convictedcriminals undergoing a deservedpunishment and through the neg ¬

lect and lack of foresight deprivedof their staple food The Independ-

ent¬

is by no moans afraid of Adver-

tiser¬

riots A paperwho could notsecure even a working representa-tion

¬

of its clique in the Legislatureis uot dangerous The Advertisershould realize that it no longer re-

present¬

the American eloment inHawaii but simply a played outband of missionary sugar planterswhose whole interest lies in divi-dends

¬

and who care nothing for thewelfare of the people of HawaiiThe teeth of the Advertiser ganghave been drawn and the organshould now ceaRe to bark

PAPAITAS TRIUMPH

Tho Tahitian Walks Four TimeaOvor Bed Hot Stones

There was quite a large numberof people who witnessed Papa Itasfire walking exhibition yesterdayafternoon Of course thare weresome who went there with precon-ceived

¬

ideas there were others whoexpeoted more thau bargained forand a good many wanted to studyand if possible to aojve the mysteryiand when the performance wasover there was a great diversion ofopinions

Some thought that while theimu as a whole was hot the largestones were not extremely hot ontho top so that the upper sidecould be stepped on without caus ¬

ing muoh discomfort these weremore encouraged in their convictionwhen Manager Lewis instructedthe workmen who had charge of theimu not to turn the stones up sidedown In compliance with thedemaud of the spectators howeverthese stones were turned over

When the fire walker was readyone of his managers announced thata certain party pointing to a bluecoat standing by was ready tostep on the heated rocks and thatif he was willing he should proceedat onoe

Take his stockings off shoutedthe Tahitians sympathizers towhich the soldier man explainedthat the fire walkers managers hadallowed him to wear his stockingsand that he would follow the Tahi-tian

¬

across the imu step by stepTo the latter part of his an ¬

nouncement the managers declaredthat if the white man was not will ¬

ing to go ahead of Papa Ita hewould not be allowed to go at allThe blue coat would not agree andhe left the Tahitian to go it alone

Immediately after the soldier boybad left Papa Ita stood up in hisglory acknowledging the crowdswelcome applause with smiles ofprido and uttered a few words of in ¬

cantations presumably summon ¬

ing his gods either to duplioate hissoles or to cool off the surface ofthe heated stones as be wentaround the imu Standing at thebead of the imu he closed his sup-plications

¬

with Amaro o amonBtruck tho ground twice with his

brush of tl loaves and then mountedthe plloof heated rocks and crossedit coolly Sayiug a few more wordsof prayer he crossed the boatedoven back again thus finishing thefirst part of tho performance Thesecond part was simply a repetitionof tho first after about ton minutesintermission

Then those who wanted to denounco Papa Ita a fake and otherswho wanted to bo suro whother thestonoB were really hot or not climbedthe oven with their shoos onofcourse and felt the stones steppedon by Papa Ita whioh they darednot to before Papa Itas gods hadreduced the heat of the stones

It is an injustice to call Papa Itasperformance a fake for he reallyfulfilled what ho had promised todo that of stepping on heatedrooks He is not to blame forpeoples over expectations

There was a little rumpus be ¬

tween Manager Lewis and the sol-

dier¬

after the performance whichresulted in their being accompaniedby the police to the Station

Although the pertormance wasnot an extraordinary feat it doesnot necessarily follow thac it wasa fake There are Hawaiiana whocan handle red hot stones in cook-ing

¬

pigs even without the assistanceof Hinanui-i-te-a- ra and Vahinenui

Soles Cabinet Meeting

Governor Dole presided at themeeting of his council or cabinet orwhatever he calls it yesterday Heread communications from theState Department in regard to thesettlement of the 95 claims Hestated that correspondence regard-ing

¬

the claim of Mnnuel Reis aPortuguese had boon forwarded toWashington by the local govern-ment

¬

with the correspondence onthe British claims and had probablybeen overlooked at the other end

The governor didnt advance any

propositions ob to what ho is goingto do now

Tho Treasury Department askedfor information in regard to thebonded indebtedness of the defunctrepublic in anticipation of action byCongress for the payment of thebonds

The Interior Department remind-ed

¬

the Governor that tho Secretaryof the Territory must send on re-

ports¬

of tho doings of the Senateaud Houso of Legislature

A light wine and beer license wasgraoliously granted to Tlios Olarkof Waihee Maui

A complaintwas read from WrayTaylor who emphatically protestedagainst the mutilation by the tele ¬

phone company of trees in ThomasSquare No action was taken
