PERSONAL STATEMENT

I received my undergraduate degree in Nagpur, India graduating with honors (> 90%)

in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. This helped me secure a position in

medical school (Government Medical College, Nagpur, India) among several thousand

applicants. During medical school, I topped my class in Anatomy/Embryology and was

amongst the top 5 in General Surgery. I conducted a study on ‘Mid arm circumference as

an indicator for nutritional status in children’ and completed a rotating internship at

Government Medical College, Nagpur. Besides academics, I also focused on some other

aspects of career development. I took the opportunity to learn computer programming with

interest in medicine and successfully programmed the first medical drug directory for my

hospital. My desire to participate in social service led me to be a part of several surgical

mission trips within India organized by the Rotary club.

I had decided to become a Pediatric Surgeon very early in my career (high school). To

achieve this goal, I joined a highly coveted General Surgery program (3 years) at

Government Medical College and Hospital, Nagpur, India. This was a very competitive

program with only 3 positions/year. Based on my academic record in medical school and

my performance in the 1st year (PGY1), I was offered the position of Senior Registrar (Chief

Resident) for the remaining 2 years of my surgical residency. In the capacity of a chief

resident, I organized Grand rounds, Journal clubs and Junior resident teaching and also

had Attending privileges allowing me to perform surgery and teach junior residents

independently. During this period, I submitted my dissertation on ‘The spectrum of benign

breast disease in the Indian population’ to the Department of Surgery following which I was

awarded the MS (Master of Surgery) degree. I then served as Lecturer in General surgery

for an additional year.

I was fortunate to be selected for Pediatric Surgical training through a nationwide

entrance examination (3 positions/year) at a premier institute, The Post Graduate

Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh, India which

operates directly under the President of India. PGIMER is a high volume

tertiary/quaternary referral center for the entire North India. I served as senior resident

(Assistant Chief Fellow) during the first year and chief senior resident (Chief Fellow)

during the second year following which I was granted the MCh (Magister Chirurgiae)

Pediatric Surgery. I subsequently served as a Pool officer (Lecturer/Consultant) for an

additional year.

With my credentials in India, I was selected for training in pediatric surgery in the United

Kingdom and successfully completed 5 years of pediatric surgical training. My first

position was at Birmingham Children’s Hospital which is one of the largest tertiary

referral and transplant centers in the UK. I subsequently rotated in the Leeds Teaching

Hospitals renowned for minimally invasive surgery for adults and children. During this

training, I earned 3 consecutive awards during year-end pediatric surgery assessments

and completed the Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons Of England [FRCS] (Pediatric

Surgery) degree examinations London, England (Board certification). I also acquired

the European Board of Pediatric Surgery certification. I subsequently served as a

Consultant (Faculty/Attending) in Pediatric Surgery at the King's College, London and

Southampton General Hospital, Southampton, England for 1 year.

I was then selected for a Fetal and General Pediatric surgery Fellowship at the

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) following which I worked as Assistant

Professor Pediatric Surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Columbia, University of

Missouri for a year.

In December 2007, I was appointed to the position of Assistant Professor of Pediatric

Surgery in the Michael E. Debakey Department of Surgery and with an adjunct

appointment in the Department of Pediatrics at BCM. Just prior to joining BCM, I spent

3 months of dedicated time learning robotic surgery at the Blank Children’s Hospital,

Des Moines, Iowa with Dr. Thom Lobe, MD.

Teaching and Education

Throughout my tenure at BCM, I served as a teacher and career mentor for multiple

learner groups, including medical students, residents, pediatric surgical fellows,

physician’s assistants, as well surgical colleagues. This resulted in several scientific

paper presentations at international meetings and peer reviewed publications in

esteemed journals. I was awarded the Educator of the Year Award for 2012-13 by

Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery and the Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P. Faculty

Excellence Award for Teaching and Evaluation in 2013. I was also inducted into the

BCM Academy of Distinguished Educators in 2013.

I consider the initiation and development of a Simulation Program in Minimally Invasive

Surgery (MIS) at BCM as my major achievement. Based on my interest in MIS training,

I was asked by the Interim Surgery Chairman (Dr. Wesson) at BCM to set up a MIS

Simulation Program for BCM residents. I successfully accomplished this challenging

project requiring establishment of a new infrastructure including lab space, simulation

stations and curriculum development resulting in 100% success rate at the subsequent

FLS testing by ACS. I subsequently worked jointly with a surgical colleague (Dr. Avo

Artiniyan, MD) in establishing a curriculum for the intern MASTER (Minimal access

surgery training education and research) Program and a year round curriculum for BCM

residents. I also proctored several surgical colleagues in advanced MIS procedures in

children.

Clinical Research

I am frequently invited to speak on minimally invasive surgery, robotic surgery and

surgical simulation and have delivered over 15 lectures and medical presentations since

2007. I have co-authored 12 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 49 abstracts and co-authored

4 book chapters since my appointment at BCM. I am a reviewer for Journal of Pediatric

Surgery, editorial consultant for Journal of Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons and

one of the editors for Bangladesh Journal of Endosurgery.

Patient Care and Service

Apart from teaching and education, I have 95% clinical responsibility at Texas Children’s

Hospital (TCH). My major focus is on minimally invasive surgery in neonates, infants

and children and I perform over 400 such procedures per year. I pioneered and

performed over 300 single port laparoscopic procedures in TCH. In addition, I teamed

up with the gastroenterologists to start the short bowel rehabilitation (bowel lengthening)

and bowel motility (placement of gastric pacemakers for gastro paresis, ACE,

laparoscopic cecostomy) programs at TCH. TCH sees a large volume of children with

vascular malformations. I participate in the surgical management of these complex

children along with my wife, who is a pediatric interventional radiologist at TCH.

Administration

I serve on various administrative committees including the TCH Trauma Committee,

BCM Education Committee and the Surgical Simulation Committee. I also serve on the

Membership committee for IPEG (International Pediatric Endo-surgery Group).

I was the director of Pediatric Surgery at Ben Taub General Hospital for a period of 4

years during which I actively conducted lectures, bedside teaching and one to one

teaching for pediatric and neonatology residents. I was the primary pediatric surgeon

with teaching and clinical responsibility at BTGH during this period. I also had the

opportunity to mentor a Physician Assistant into Pediatric Surgery.

National and International Recognition

I play a leadership role in sharing the technology and experience at BCM and TCH with

other centers around the world. I am a Visiting Professor at the Post Graduate Institute

of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India where I am committed to

conducting hands-on teaching, lecturing and educational courses annually. I conducted

a live workshop on MIS at Rainbow Children’s hospital, Hyderabad, India, (attended by

300 pediatric MIS surgeons) and Apollo Children Hospital, Chennai, India. I was invited

by the University Hospital Nairobi, Kenya to present lectures on MIS and Robotic

Surgery. During my visit I also conducted bedside teaching, interesting case and

discussion session for surgery residents. I was also invited to Frere Children’s hospital,

East London, South Africa as Visiting Professor to conduct a week long education

session and live surgical MIS workshop for surgical, pediatric surgical residents and

faculty.

Global Pediatric surgical education and simulation teaching

I visit a 1600 bedded children in Ho chi Minh city, Vietnam every year during which I

conduct live workshops and symposia on neonatal laparoscopy and thoracoscopy. I

perform about 15 neonatal cases every year and train over 35 pediatric surgery faculty

in neonatal minimally invasive surgery.

Global Pediatric surgical charity

I am the chairman of “Peedh Parai International” (www.Peedhparai.org), a surgical

charity for children. We conduct surgical missions to global locations and provide

surgical help for poor children. So far we have conducted 3 surgical missions and

operated over 300 complex congenital malformations in poor children.

I wish to continue my efforts at self-learning, teaching and creating innovative treatment

methods and teaching tools in pediatric surgery in the years to come.
