GeneMullinisinhis25thyearatthehelmoftheFurmancrosscountryandtrackandfieldpro-grams. Inthecourseofhisten-ure,FurmanhashostedtwoNCAADivisionICrossCountryNational

Championships,addedthewomen’scrosscountryandtrackandfieldprograms,resur-facedtheFurmantrackwithastate-of-the-artsurface,andestablishedatrackandfield/cross-countryscholarshipendowment.Thisyear,themen’sindoortrack&fieldteamwillalsoreturntoitsoriginalstatusasoneofthe18sportssponsoredbytheuniversity.Inad-dition,theFurmanrunnershavewonacco-ladesonandoffthefieldofcompetitionandhavecontinuedtoshineintheclassroom. Mullin,anine-timeSouthernConferenceCoachoftheYear,hasearnedtherespectofhispeersandhisathletestheoldfashionedway—hardwork,dedication,andlotsofhands-onexperience.Mullinearnedhismostrecentaccoladewhenhewasnamedthe2006SoConMen’sCrossCountryCoachoftheYear,leadingthesquadtoasecond-placeshowingattheleaguemeet. Despitea12-monthdevotiontoFurman,MullinspentfouryearsasamemberoftheNCAAChampionshipsCommitteeforCrossCountryandTrackandField,overseeingtheNCAA’sthreeDivisionItrackandcrosscountryevents.Inaddition,hehasexpandedhisworkwithUSATrackandField,thegov-erningbodyofrunninginthiscountry. AsanactivememberofUSATrackandField,Mullin’smostrecenthonorcameinthesummerof2000,whenhewasnamedheadcoachoftheUSAJuniorNationalTeam.Then,inthefallof2000,MullinledhisjuniorteamtotheworldchampionshipsinSan-tiago,Chile. Hisappointmentasheadcoachfollowedhispositionasassistantcoachandheadad-ministratorforthe1995U.S.NationalTeamthattraveledtoGateshead,England,foradualmatchwiththeBritishNationalSquad.Inaddition,in1987,hewasamemberofthecoachingstaffattheOlympicFestivalinRaleigh-Durham,N.C.,wherehis400mand1,600mrelaysquadssetnewworldrecords.

Inthesummerof1990,MullinwastheheadadministratorfortheUSANationalTeam.Inthesummerof1991asheadcoachoftheOlympicFestival’sSouthSquad,Mul-linfacedoneofhisgreatestchallenges.Hehadtosearch11southernstatestofindtheathletesthatwouldbestrepresentthispor-tionofthecountry. Asadirectresultofhisdedication,theSouthsquadtookthegoldinthe4x100mrelay,the3,000msteeplechase,andthedecathlon. InadditiontohistimewithUSATrackandFieldandtheNCAACommittee,MullinaddedvaluableinternationalexperiencetohisrésuméwhenhespentsixyearsasheadcoachoftheSaudiArabianNationalTeam.UndertheguidanceofMullin,fiveSaudiathletesestablishednationalrecordswhilepreparingforOlympiccompetition. Withhisdedicationtotrackandfieldcompetitionworldwide,Mullinisnotonlyhelpinghissportsgainpopularityacrosstheworld,butisgivingFurmanvaluableexpo-sureacrossthiscountryandbeyond.

BecauseofhisworkwithUSATrackandField,Mullinisanexpertorganizerandad-ministrator,andishelpingfashionthefutureoftheUnitedStatesOlympicTeam. TheseadministrativeskillsaretestedeachfallwhenMullinhoststheFurmanInvita-tional.TheInvitationalisnowinits34thyear,andlastyearfeaturedsixraceswithover1,500participants.Inaddition,theSoutheastRegionMeethasbeenhostedbyFurman28timessince1972.Smoothsail-ingatthesetwoeventspavedthewayforFurmantohostthe1997and2001NCAAChampionshipandledAlabamacoachDavidTroytosay,“The1995DistrictIIImeetwasespeciallymemorable—nonstoprainfromdawnuntiltheconclusionoftheraces!Despiteincrediblyadverseconditions,Geneandhiscrewcarriedonasifitwerebrightsunshineandbothraceswerecompletedflawlessly.” ItisclearthatFurmanisbenefitingfromMullin’smultipletalents.Inthelast18years,women’scrosscountryandtrackandfieldhascomeintobeing,FurmansentitsfirstwomantotheNCAACrossCountryCham-pionshipsandMullin’sathleteshavenetted

FurmanUniversity,whichovertheyearshasclaimedsevenSouthernConferencetitlesintrackandfieldandsixleaguecrosscountrychampion-ships,dedicatedtheIrwinBelkComplexforTrackandFieldinOctober1997. Thefacilityisnamedinhonorofitsprincipalbenefactor,IrwinBelk,thesonofWilliamHenryBelkandthefounderoftheBelkmerchandisingempire.IrwinBelk,alongtimeleaderinbusiness,thearts,politics,andeducationinthestateofNorthCarolina,attendedtheUniversityofNorthCarolina-ChapelHill,wherehesetanumberofrecordsintrack.Asaphilanthropist,BelkhasgiventheleadgiftfortrackandfieldcomplexesattheUniversityofNorthCarolina,CharlotteandnowFurman,andisdedicatedtotheadvancementofthesport. Inadditiontotheimprovedtrackcom-plex,FurmannowboaststheKelsey-Westtrack,aredMONDOsurfacewitheight42-inchlanes.Thehighjump,longjump,triplejump,andpolevaultrunwaysarejoinedbyacreamcoloredapron.MONDOisthepremiernameintracksurfacesandhasbeenusedineachofthelastsixOlym-picsandatthe1997WorldTrack&FieldChampionshipsheldinAthens,Greece. InApril2007,Furmanannouncedtheplannedconstructionofanew$2.5milliontrackhouseandanewtrackcomplex. Thefirstphaseoftheprojectwillbeatwo-story,6,000-square-foottrackhousethatwillbesituatedatopthehilloverlook-ingthetrack,offCherrydaleLane.Itwillincludelockerroomsforthemen’sandwomen’steams,coaches’offices,arecep-tionareaandawarm-upareaforathletes. Attachedtothetrackhousewillbeanew2,000-square-footlaboratoryfortheFurmanInstituteofRunningandScientificTrainingfaculty. Thenewtrackhousealsoincludessubse-quentplanstorenovatetheexistingIrwin

BelkComplexForTrack&Field,installlights,constructbleacherseatingfor1,500,erectapressbox,andaddparking. Thefacilityconstructionandimprove-mentsannouncementcameinconjunctionwiththeAsicsBlueShoesMilebanquetheldattheHyattRegencyindowntownGreenville.Over400alumniandothers,including1972U.S.Olympicgoldmedalistinthe800meters,DaveWottle,andformerBostonMarathonwinnerAmbyBurfoot,wereonhandfortheeventfulweekendthatalsoincludedthesecondannualAsicsBlueShoesMilerun.RenowndistancerunnerAlanWebbcappedtheevent,attendedbyover3,000fans,byrecordingthefirst-eversub-4-minutemileonaSouthCarolinatrackwithatimeof3:57.83. “Thisisadreamcometrueandapositivestepforwardforourprogram,”saidlong-timeFurmancrosscountryandtrackandfieldcoachGeneMullin.“Itisatremen-dousassetinourrecruitingefforts,andalsototheFurmanandGreenvillecommunity.Withthisfacility,welookforwardtohost-ingconference,regionalandinternationaleventsontheprep,collegiateandprofes-sionallevels.”

The Irwin Belk Complex for Track & Field features the Kelsey-West Track which is a MONDO running surface. The facility will be

getting a facelift over the next few years as there are plans for a new track house and renovated complex.
