Dear Golden Key Members and Friends:Each day as Executive Director of Golden Key International Honour Society, I have the privilege and opportunity to see firsthand and hear about the impact that Golden Key is making in the lives of our members. I receive emails, phone calls and letters from our student and alumni members about the difference that we have made in their collegiate journeys. Time and time again the members that contact me are scholarship winners. I truly believe that one of the most significant ways we accomplish the fulfillment of our mission is through our scholarship and awards program.

Golden Key offers $1 million in scholarships and awards annually to our deserving members. Through this programmatic offering our members are able to pursue their academic endeavors with less difficulty and are able to spend time impacting their communities and growing as twenty-first century leaders. Our scholarship recipients are able to have unique experiences, which give them a leg up in the post graduate world. They accomplish this through unique study abroad experiences with the assistance of our Study Abroad Scholarship or through continued and enhanced research due to receiving a Golden Key Research Grant. Here at Golden Key, we feel very proud and honored to be able to serve our members in this way and to truly make an impact on their lives.

On the following pages you will see a detailed outline of our scholarship program and the 2014 recipients. Take a minute to read the feature stories of our scholarship winners or look at the list of our Graduate Scholar Award winners. I promise that you will be amazed at the students in this report. They have achieved academic excellence, and also serve their communities and lead their campuses with integrity and excellence.

As always, our achievements as an organization would not be possible without the support and dedication of Golden Key members, donors and volunteers. We truly thank you for the important role that you play in helping Golden Key members realize their potential.

As Executive Director of Golden Key International Honour Society, I am proud of what we have achieved this past year and look forward to continuing our efforts to foster support for such dynamic students who continue to inspire, excel and serve.

Sincerely,

Bradford W. Rainey Executive Director

Education Debt Reduction Award, $5,000Olympic sprinter. Theologian. Not your typical Golden Key member.

That is Willem de Beer. Growing up in Pretoria, South Africa, Willem always set important goals for himself. Growing up with divorced parents (both remarried) it wasn’t always easy. Being one of many children in both families, he was never pushed to excel. The will to make them proud and utilize his talents drove him to succeed.

Willem is committed to his two core passions – theology and athletics. As far as theology, he holds a bachelor’s degree in Theology and a master’s degree in Divinity from the University of Pretoria and is an ordained minister. He is compelled to find a way to give people spiritual guidance. In regard to his athletic pursuits, he has competed for South Africa on numerous occasions as a sprinter who specializes in the 400 metres. He won a silver medal in the 4 × 400 m relay at the 2011 World Championships — a new national record. At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, de Beer was part of the South African team in the 4 x 400 m relay final, among other achievements.

Willem currently holds two jobs—one as a youth worker and counselor at a primary school and another as a youth worker at his local church with emphasis on students and young adults between the ages of 18-28. With the students and young adults, he is tasked with their spiritual growth as well as creating meaningful opportunities for community and fellowship. He enjoys working with people and assisting them with their personal needs, be it spiritual or guidance in life’s difficulties. Willem explained how much he enjoys both of his jobs as they are fulfilling and suit his personality.

However, he has another pursuit — Olympic glory. Both of Willem’s jobs are part time so that he has time to focus on his athletic career. Willem made a personal choice to take on jobs that don’t pay well so that he can follow his spiritual passion and still have time to dedicate himself to his athletics. However, his studies and athletic pursuits (including traveling abroad for competitions) put a strain on him financially and he had to take out a sizable amount of student loans. Winning the Golden Key Education Debt Reduction Award changed that.

“After seven years of study I had a substantial amount of student loans to pay off. It would have taken me four more years by myself considering other living costs as well. This award not only made my life easier but also motivates me to follow my dreams,” he said. “Now I am given the opportunity to settle my affairs of the past and start working on my dreams for tomorrow which include starting another post graduate qualification in the field of Practical Theology, pursuing Olympic glory as a professional athlete at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, and focusing on giving back to my sport and being active in the community.”

In addition to his athletic pursuits, Willem continues to set lofty goals for himself in the future. Some of his goals include gaining a doctorate in theology, becoming a motivational speaker, and opening a denominationally free church where fellowship and community take priority over race, status, wealth and orientation to create committed followers of Christ.

Outstanding Student Member Award, $1,000 International Student of the Year Award, $1,500 Undergraduate Achievement Award, $5,000Crystal’s educational path has been a long and difficult journey. Her father graduated from high school, but her mother never finished the 8th grade. Without much guidance on continuing her education or a future career after high school and needing to contribute to her family’s income, she worked as a landscaper and a receptionist after graduating high school at the age of 16. Without much direction in her life, she continued to work in jobs with no advancement opportunities. Crystal started a family at the age of 21 and had three children by time she was 26 years old. She continued to work and selected jobs that would allow her to have an active part in her children’s lives.

At the age of 33, Crystal decided it was time to make a change and enrolled in community college. However, there were obstacles she had to overcome. Her self-esteem was low and the thought of attending classes, doing homework and taking tests terrified her. Crystal did not believe that she would be successful after having graduated high school 17 years prior. It was also difficult to find the time to take classes since she was working full time. She was limited to online, evening and weekend classes—making the process much longer than desired.

Through it all, she excelled academically, but life continued to present obstacles when she was ready to transfer to a university. Crystal owned a home childcare business that was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain since she also had to care for her family and go to school, and she found out she was having another child. Then, tragedy struck as her stepfather was killed and her mother’s health was deteriorating. She closed down her childcare business, moved her family into her mother’s house in order to take care of her, and two months later she gave birth to a beautiful daughter.

Not once did she think about giving up her education though. In 2012, she finally was able to continue the path towards earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology at California State University, Sacramento. She enrolled in school full time and her husband became the sole financial supporter for the family. Receiving Golden Key scholarships has helped Crystal reduce their financial burden. “I am truly honored and privileged to receive these scholarships from Golden Key. It has been my honor to be a member of an organization that not only advocates for academic achievement and leadership, but is 100% committed to giving back through service as well,” she said.

“Despite the numerous obstacles in place for a Hispanic mother of four, I excelled in college and discovered a passion for helping others pursue their own educational journey. I am very passionate about supporting students from underrepresented minority communities and first generation college students,” Crystal said. “The best reward that this journey has given me is that my own daughters know and believe that they too can go to college. My journey is far from over; I will continue to further my education, develop my professional skills, and advocate for equity in education.”

Crystal is currently a program coordinator for the College of Continuing Education at CSU Sacramento, where she supports continued professional development for professionals in the community. After graduating with her B.A. in Psychology, she has continued her educational path in a master’s program for Higher Educational Leadership at CSU Sacramento.

“As an education specialist and strong believer in life-long learning, I am excited to utilise the funds made available through the GK Alumni Professional

Development Grant to continue broadening my horizons both on a professional as well as personal level. Receiving this recognition is a great encouragement and

motivation and no doubt will unlock many doors in its wake.”

“I would like to thank Golden Key for this award and the communities I volunteer in for allowing me to learn from

“Accepting the Living the Mission Award is a huge milestone for me

and I am extremely honoured and privileged to have been awarded it! This

award has definitely helped to boost my motivation for further study next year where I will be undertaking my Masters; and because of this scholarship I will not be as constrained financially.”

Kathleen Seddon2014 Living the Mission Award recipient, $1,000 University of Canterbury, New Zealand

“This award definitely means a great deal to me as it recognizes

my commitment to academics, leadership and community service. It is

also a great help to me to complete my Bachelor Degree in Monash University Malaysia. I will continue my effort in leading the chapter to become a notable honor society on campus.”

Xi Li Ng2014 Undergraduate Achievement Scholarship recipient, $5,000 Monash University, Australia

“This award money will definitely help me a lot to procure important reagents for my doctoral studies in Neuroscience. It will help me focus better on my research and serve the society. I am extremely grateful to Golden Key for the award since winning this award makes a huge difference to me and my career. It is critical for scientists to be able to get grant awards for research and what better for a young, budding trainee than to get an international award such as the Golden Key Research Grant!”

Jay Bhatt 2014 Research Grant recipient, $1,000

University of Alabama at Birmingham, United States

“The recognition I received from Golden Key was a constant reminder to stay focused and dedicated throughout my

studies. Without it, I don’t think I would have received my academic honorary colours and won best design student for

my undergraduate degree.”

“This award not only reflects my personal commitment to Golden Key’s pillars of academics, leadership, and service, but also the support of my

family, friends, academic mentors, and volunteer partners. I pursued a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy to enter a profession centered

on helping people participate in meaningful life activities at home, work, school, and in the community. I did so at a time when I had a newborn baby, a wife

on maternity leave, and was active in community volunteering and leadership work. As such, I feel extremely fortunate to have received financial assistance from this and other academic awards during my degree! Through this scholarship, I also hope to further my research in pediatric ergonomics to promote health among school-aged children. I am grateful for my membership in Golden Key and for this award!”
