I do not meet very many atheists. I do occasionally meet doubters ofGod’s existence. I usually tell them that as a 23 year old fallen awayCatholic man, who had just lost his father, I started asking myself bigquestions: Do I believe in God? Do I believe in an afterlife? It seemed tome that every culture throughout history believed in a God or a series ofgods and believed in some sort of afterlife. It brought me some solace. It didn’t seem like everybody could be wrong. Also, I think we have anatural desire to pray. You would almost have to fight yourself not topray in some manner. That aside, all seminarians and priests are familiarwith Saint Thomas Aquinas’ Five Philosophical Proofs for God’sExistence. In other words, these proofs are derived from human reason, not biblical revelation.Saint Thomas, who lived from 1225-1274, formulated them for the university students of theday. Theology, then considered the “Queen of the Sciences”, was considered essentialknowledge for an educated person. Obviously, times have changed. The proofs were meant to besimple, understandable proofs for the “average Joe and Jane.” That mentioned, no matter howmany times I heard a priest or religious sister explain the proofs or read an explanation in a book,I didn’t understand them until I read Bishop Robert Barron’s explanation in his book, To Light AFire on Earth: Proclaiming the Gospel in a Secular Age. I recommend this book and Irecommend memorizing the proofs. More than anything, I think my difficulty understanding theproofs had to do with the medieval writing style. Bishop Barron has a knack of making heavenlyteachings easy to understand. I’m not sure you’ll have much initial luck converting an unbelieveror doubter with them but you may lay the groundwork for a future conversion.

Saint Thomas Aquinas’ Five Proofs for God’s Existence:

* Unmoved mover : For Thomas Aquinas, “moving” included any kind of change - notjust spatial motion. Things change all the time in the world, and those changes are alwayscaused by something else. A plant grows because someone waters it, I change jobs becausesomeone hired me, and so on. However, that chain can’t go back indefinitely, because at somepoint there had to be a force that initiated change without external cause, and that’s what God is.

* First cause : In the world, everything that happens has a cause. Once again, however, that chain can’t be infinite, because something has to exist without being caused, and that’s God.

* Contingency : When we look around, it’s clear that everything in the world depends onsomething else, meaning everything is “contingent”. I wouldn’t be here without my parents, myPrius wouldn’t exist without Toyota, et cetera. However, there has to be something that’s notcontingent that got the ball rolling, and that is God.

* Degree : As we think about the world, instinctively we think about things as more or less“good”, more or less “beautiful,” et cetera. Yet that evaluation implies some absolute standardof perfect goodness, perfect beauty, and so on, against which everything else is being judged, and that’s another way of saying “God”.

* Natural End : In the world, even nonintelligent beings appear to behave with purpose -acorns, for instance, grow into oak trees without anyone engineering it. Yet, since these thingscan’t think for themselves, they must have acquired that orientation toward a goal from someintelligent force, and again, that’s a way of talking about God.

A Reading from the Book of Wisdom (WIS 11:22-12:2)

Before the LORD the whole universe is as a grain from a balance or a drop of morning dew come

down upon the earth. But you have mercy on all, because you can do all things; and you overlook

people's sins that they may repent. For you love all things that are and loathe nothing that you have

made; for what you hated, you would not have fashioned. And how could a thing remain, unless you

willed it; or be preserved, had it not been called forth by you? But you spare all things, because they

are yours, O LORD and lover of souls, for your imperishable spirit is in all things! Therefore you

rebuke offenders little by little, warn them and remind them of the sins they are committing, that

they may abandon their wickedness and believe in you, O LORD!

A Reading from the Second Letter of St. Paul to the Thessalonians (2 THES 1:11-2:2)

Brothers and sisters: We always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy ofhis calling and powerfully bring to fulfillment every good purpose and every effort offaith, that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, inaccord with the grace of our God and Lord Jesus Christ. We ask you, brothers andsisters, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our assembling withhim, not to be shaken out of your minds suddenly, or to be alarmed either by a “spirit,”or by an oral statement, or by a letter allegedly from us to the effect that the day of theLord is at hand.

Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke (LK 19:1-10)

People: Glory to you, O Lord.

At that time, Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town. Now a manthere named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man, wasseeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for hewas short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way. When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said,“Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.” And he camedown quickly and received him with joy. When they all saw this, they began togrumble, saying, “He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner.” But Zacchaeus stoodthere and said to the Lord, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to thepoor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to savewhat was lost.”

Priest: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Responsorial: I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God. (PS 145:1-2, 8-9, 10-11, 13, 14)

the Only Begotten Son of God,

born of the Father before all ages.

God from God, Light from Light,

from heaven,At the words that follow, up to and including and became Man, all bow

and by the Holy Spirit was Incarnate of the

Virgin Mary and became Man.

For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate,

He suffered death and was buried,

and rose again on the third day

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living

and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

Golden Rose, Queen of Ireland all my cares and troubles ceaseas I kneel with love before you, Lady of Knock, our Queen of Peace

Though your message was unspoken still the truth in silence liesas we gaze upon your vision, and the truth I try to find. Here I stand with John the teacher and with Joseph at your sideand I see the Lamb of God on the Altar glorified.

Moving Souls from Purgatory to HeavenThe salvation of one’s eternal soul is serious business. And we are often left to wonder about the souls of our dearly departed who have left this life and gone on to the next. Is there any way we can know, or even help determine, where they will spend eternity?

Lectio Divina (“Divine Reading”) originated in the monasteries but it’sa practice that can benefit all Catholics. I’d suggest looking up the dailyMass readings and prayerfully reading at least the Gospel. If you areambitious, begin with the beginning of the New Testament and read forone half hour. After reading a small section of Scripture, ask yourselfthe following questions:

1. Lectio (Reading) - what does the biblical text say in itself? 2. Meditatio (Meditation) - what does the biblical text say to us? 3. Oratio (Prayer) - what do we say to the Lord in response to his word? 4. Contemplatio (Contemplation) - what conversion of mind, heart, and life is the Lord asking of us?

N.B. I was told that YouTube sensation Father Chad Ripperger recommends that Catholics try tospend one half hour prayerfully doing Lectio Divinia, especially if you suffer from an addiction.

Saint Peter’s Parish was founded nearly 200 years ago by Irishimmigrants. For many years we were known as the “Irish” parish ofPoughkeepsie. For those of you who don’t know, England becameProtestant permanently under Queen Elizabeth who ruled from1558-1603. During her reign approximately 130 Catholic priests wereexecuted. Many of them were hung, drawn and quartered. LayCatholics lost their lives too. England tried to impose Protestantism onthe Irish. In theory, all you had to do was kiss the ring, go to Anglicanservices (Church of England). Then, you would enjoy the rights andbenefits of an Englishman. The Irish, overwhelming, refused to do it.

Listed below are some of the laws the Irish had to live under. Don’t drink the modern Kool-aidthat all religions are the same. They are not. Our ancestors would rather die, starve or emigratethan buy that malarky.

Some of the laws included:- Exclusion of Catholics from holding public office- No Catholic could vote or be elected to office.- A ban was imposed upon Catholics from owning land.- Catholics could not lease land for longer than thirty one years and rent was equal to two

thirds of the yearly value of the land.- Catholics were not allowed to hold arms or be a member of the armed forces.- If a Catholic landholder died, his estate could not be passed to the eldest son unless thatson was a Protestant. Otherwise, it was to be shared by all the surviving sons.- A ban was imposed upon the intermarriage between Catholics and Protestants.- Catholics could not be an orphan’s guardian.- Catholics were barred from living in many provincial towns.- Catholic clergy were to be registered and were required to take an oath of loyalty, butfriars, monks, hierarchy and Jesuits were to be exiled- Places of worship could not have a steeple or display a cross.- Catholics and dissenters were required to pay tithes to the Anglican Church of Irelandwhich was the Established Church.- Catholics could not establish schools or send their children abroad for education.
