The X chromosome carries the genes for Red and Green photosensors. Men have one X chromosome and women have two, so a defective genetic sequence is more likely in males. On the other hand some evidence has been reported that defective genetic sequences in women can occur in one X chromosome but not in the other producing tetrachromatic vision in maybe 6% (estimated) of women.
