Message from Father Robert: In the church of San Luigi de Francesi in Rome, there is a famous painting done by

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio it is called “The Calling of St. Matthew.” It depicts Our Lord’s invitation to St. Matthew, who was sitting at the customs post counting his money, to follow him. What is interesting about the painting is that artist himself is known for a technique called chiaroscuro that uses strong contrasts between light and dark. In this particular painting the light is on St. Matthew pointing to himself, and two younger men on his right who are looking at Jesus while the two other men on the left of St. Matthew who are focused the money that is on the table are dimmed. In many ways the painting can make us reflect on how we like St. Matthew responded to Christ’s invitation to follow Him either with generosity ready to leave the table and go wherever the Lord goes, or to be focused on passing things.

This Monday the Church celebrates the Feast of St. Matthew the Evangelist. St. Matthew, also known as Levi was a tax collector, a job that was considered to be the lowest of all profession by the Jewish people of that time. In other words, if you were tax collector you were a great sinner. Through Jesus’ invitation to follow Him not only did St. Matthew leave his life of sin, but also came to a life of faith in Christ. In the beginning of the Gospel of Matthew we are confronted with the reality of sinful humanity and the need for a Savior. At the end of the Gospel of Matthew we are given a unique mission that despite whatever obstacles come our way we are called to make known the message of Salvation, the Gospel.

God does call us like St. Matthew to make known the Good News, namely, by our generous response to follow Christ through a conversion of heart. This conversion of heart does not happen one time in our lives, but it is a daily experience. Might I recommend to simply read a chapter of the Gospel of Matthew a day so that the eternal words of Christ can speak to our hearts.

Sunday September 27th

Did you know that 20 million Americans struggle with addictive illnesses? Nine million children live in homes with one parent who has an addiction. Addictions to alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex, social media, food, shopping and pornography are among those that require treatment and our prayers. “Jesus said to them, ‘This kind (of demon) cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting’” (Mk 9:29) “Recovery Sunday” is a reminder of the plight of those dealing daily with addiction and recovery issues, and those who love and support them on the difficult journey to healing. It is an opportunity to recall the true meaning of freedom, as material abundance and spiritual emptiness too often lead to addictive behaviors. Most importantly, the observance of “Recovery Sunday” is a powerful vehicle for prayer for families and communities in need.

Please join us in prayer on Recovery Sunday.

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim

freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year the Lord’s favor.”

Luke 4:18
