The stripes: 13 horizontal stripes, seven red alternating with 6 white.

The stars: 50 stars - 1 star for each state in the union.

My First Look• Established on June

14, 1777 by the Continental Congress.

• The first Flag Act resolved that the flag be made of 13 stripes, alternating red and white, and one star for each of the 13 states.

• George Washington asked Elizabeth (Betsy) Ross to sew the first U.S. flag.

• George Washington drew a picture of the flag he wanted her to sew.

• She sewed it in 1776.
