Blogger Your typical day A Blogger is responsible for writing interesting and engaging articles geared for a specific target audience and creates original, relevant and timely topics. They may also develop digital products to sell, create videos to go along with their articles, and participate in social media to engage with their audience. Skills + training you need A blogger doesn’t need to have a degree, but they do need to be knowledgeable about the topics they will discuss on their blog. They should be creative enough to come up with relevant, interesting topics. They also need to know their audience’s needs, wants and problems and be able to address them successfully. Having a professional, consistent, and sometimes witty writing style that encourages subscribers to share on social media and elsewhere is helpful! How to get started 1. Buy your domain name and set up your blog. 2. Start writing articles to your audience. Grow your audience! 3. Look for guest blogging opportunities and share your blog with other audiences. 4. MONETIZE!! My Outlook Blogging is a very lucrative business to start. Once you learn the marketing, social media, and content creation side, the income possibilities are endless. PS...I’m a blogger! *wink*

Virtual Assistant Your typical day Virtual assistants (VAs) offer administrative, technical, or creative support for other entrepreneurs. They operate in the role of a secretary or executive assistant, except they are virtual. Some niche down, while others add various skill sets to their expertise. This makes them more marketable and valuable, when looking for clients. skill sets. Most entrepreneurs may need a VA for 5-10 hours per week. While there are other more, established entrepreneurs who need a VA 20-40 hours a week. Skills + training you need VAs need a host of skills to be able to perform their job well, for their clients. Those VAs who niche down into specialty areas like website/blog support, social media management, graphic design, accounting, etc. need more specialized training. However, these are the VAs who have really successful businesses and stay in demand. How to get started 1. Decide the type of services you want to offer. Be sure your skills and expertise match. 2. Determine the niches you want to serve. When just starting out I recommend starting with 1-2 niches, then grow from there. 3. Examine your equipment, software and work space to ensure they meet client needs. You don’t need the latest Mac computer or a super fancy desk, but you do want to be able to work with relative ease. Also, be sure you have a high-speed internet connection! I’d skimp on the other stuff, but would pay for a good internet connection speed, especially if you’re using Wi-Fi in your home. 4. Market your services + find your first client. Places like Upwork, Freelancer, and Fiverr have people looking for VA work. If you enjoy social media, you can even market your services there. My Outlook I believe Virtual Assistants are here to stay. Unless the internet goes bust or robots take over our lives, there will always be the need for VA work. More and more entrepreneurs are getting started online. They all need help (some for short-term projects, others for long-term, ongoing work), but they don’t necessarily want to hire an executive assistant. This is where VAs can be invaluable! I will say this though, if you want to stay ahead of the competition and always have clients knocking on your door, you REALLY want to specialize and niche down. I see the most popular, in-demand VAs being those in social media management, website-technical help (think bloggers), email marketing, content marketing, sale funnels + software to run them.

Tutorial and Enrichment Services Your typical day An online tutor offers additional support to students in various subjects. Some students need remedial help others are looking for enrichment. Your primary responsibility will be to help students with the subject where they need the most support or enrichment, as well as developing their own independent study skills. As you grow your client base, you may offer a virtual classroom and use platforms like Skype or Zoom to host a seminar for your students. Other online tutors work as independent contractors for companies who find students for you to work with. Either way, you can work up to 40+ hours a week as an online tutor. Skills + training you need Tutors (online or face-to-face) need to have skills and training similar to those of a teacher. You don’t need to necessarily have a college degree, but you should have a level of expertise in the subjects you will be offering for tutorial services. In this role, you’ll be working closely with students and their parents, so you’ll have to keep that dynamic in mind. You also want to have a basic understanding of certain special needs* *Some students you encounter may have special learning needs or disabilities. Some common ones are dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, processing deficits, dyscalculia (math disability), dysgraphia (writing disability). These are nothing to be afraid of or feel that you cannot serve them. They are likely in need of tutorial services because of their special needs. You may find that niching down and honing in on working with students with disabilities to be beneficial to you and your business. How to get started 1. Decide which subjects you feel you have the most expertise and would enjoy tutoring. 2. Decide if you want to be an online or face-to-face tutor. You could even choose a combination of the two to meet the needs of your clients/students. 5. Determine your tutorial hours. During the school year, it will likely be after-school. During the summer, you will have more flexibility because most students are out of school. 6. Start advertising and marketing. You can make flyers to post at your local schools and libraries. Ask family and friends if they know of any students who need tutorial services. Scroll your social media timelines for people asking for help for their child’s school work. 7. If you choose to become an independent contractor for a company, you’ll have to go through their application and training process. My Outlook I believe tutors are here to stay. There is always a need for remediation and enrichment for students. I worked for years as a public high school teacher and we were always looking for tutors for students. A teacher or parent can only do so much. Sometimes they need to call in reinforcement - that could be you, as a tutor!

Consultant Your typical day A consultant is someone who is very knowledgeable (think almost expert level) in their field. They offer their knowledge and expertise to both large and small businesses or organizations, in their field to help them grow, expand, or even handle crisis situations. In many cases, a consultant may also work to train employees within a company or organization, provide professional development workshops at conferences, and even hosts their own seminars, traveling locally, nationally, or even internationally. Skills + training you need Consultants need to be at “expert” level in their field. If not “expert” level, then really close to it. They should have at least 10 years of consistent work. Plus, at some point in time have been in a leadership capacity, by supervising and training others within their company or organization. How to get started 1. Determine if your years of experience in your field qualify you to be considered an “expert.” 2. Determine if you need any additional certifications to work as a consultant in your field. 3. Identify local businesses or organizations that could use your expertise to help with growth. 4. Look for opportunities to network with other people outside of your business circle and spend more time listening to what issues their company is facing. 5. Market your services by reaching out to former bosses, new contacts, and even cold calling. 6. Build a portfolio of your results. These can be results you were able to get while working as an employee and for your clients. People want to see results! My Outlook I believe consultants can have a lot of longevity in their marketplace. Companies and organizations often look to outsource things like grow, expansion, and reorganization because it gives the “arm’s length” feel for employees. If you present and market yourself well, you can do very well as a consultant.

Coaching

Your typical day Coaches work with clients to identify areas for growth, both professionally and personally. Through regular meetings, they help assess their clients' progress towards meeting their goals. They also help clients achieve personal and professional objectives through a collaborative process of self-assessment, problem-solving and goal setting. Skills + training you need Depending upon your niched area of coaching, you may need to have a bachelor’s degree and/or additional training and licensure. You will need to check with your State and National Board to verify. How to get started 1. Get trained and certified, if necessary. 2. Gain experience through an internship or an externship. 3. Advertise on social media + start a blog 4. Consider joining professional organizations related to resume writing, to network with other professionals and potential clients. My Outlook I believe there’s a need to coaches to come alongside others to help them reach their fullest potential in life. There’s great reward seeing others win! The compensation is often much bigger than anything monetary. There are multiple areas of coaching: Life Fitness Health Career Business Finances Weather Personal Development Spiritual Development Family Marriage Children Relationships

Professional Speaker Your typical day A professional speaker is someone who is a keynote speaker at conferences, seminars, and other professional meetings. Some professional speakers help motivate people, while others speak on more professional topics that are related to the industry and niche they love. Skills + training you need Professional speakers need to first be very passionate about their area of expertise. In some cases, it helps to have a degree. In other cases, it doesn’t matter what your level of education is. For example, a medical doctor or engineer who speaks about a certain topic within their field would need to have a degree and any other certifications. On the other hand, a motivational speaker, speaking to empower women would not likely need to have a degree of any kind. It is a good idea to take professional speaking classes and to join groups like Toastmasters that allow you to fine tune your speaking skills and style. How to get started 1. Be very knowledgeable and passionate about your speaking topics. 2. Practice your public speaking skills daily. 3. Look for opportunities to sign up as a speaker for events, seminars, and conferences. 4. Build a portfolio of your speaking engagements. It really helps to have a video and/or audio recording of your speeches. 5. Offer to speak at schools, libraries, churches, and other such places so you can get your name out there. My Outlook I think public speaking is a great entrepreneurial field to go into. There is always a market for people who need motivation, inspiration, and information. I will say this...being a professional speaker means you’ll need to stay booked or be willing to go some time without any gigs. It isn’t a steady stream of income; however, it can pay very well. So, you may only need to do a few gigs a year and still make a great income, especially once you become very well known in your industry and niche.

Real Estate Agent Your typical day A real estate agent works to buy and sell properties like homes, condos, townhomes, land, and commercial buildings. They typically spend their day showing properties, drawing up contracts to buy and sell properties, and in some cases, they work closely with land developers or even councilmen to help determine the best use of property in their local area. Skills + training you need In most states the only certification you need is a Real Estate license. This means going to a real estate school and then passing your State board exam. In addition, to be a really good real estate agent you will also want to learn about marketing, home staging, and even become specialized in a niche that interests you. How to get started 1. Check with your State Board to determine the certification requirements. 2. Take the necessary real estate course(s) and pass the State examination. 3. Get connected with your local Realtor’s Association to network, learn about the industry, and get the inside scoop on the market. 4. Determine which brokerage you want to work for to help you learn the industry. 5. Build up your clientele, leads, and make your first sale! My Outlook I believe Real Estate Agents are here to stay. There will always be homes and land for sale or develop. Someone needs to be the expert in making that happen that’s fair to all parties involved. Word of caution: Many people go into real estate thinking they can get rich quick or flip houses for pennies on the dollar. While this is possible, it’s also more likely that you won’t get rich quick or can lose a lot of money if you don’t know what you’re doing. Go into real estate being realistic and willing to work hard. It will pay off!

Home/Apartment Staging Your typical day Home stagers use their decorating and design skills to declutter and improve furniture placement, allowing prospective homebuyers to imagine the possibilities each room represents. When builders are setting up a show home or realtors are trying to sell a home, they may hire home stagers. These professionals set up the space to demonstrate its use and style to potential buyers. They need to consider the ideal buyers for the property and use furnishings and design styles that would appeal to them. Skills + training you need There are no specific education requirements to start a business as a home stager, but many get their training through university and college continuing education courses in which they can learn about architectural styles, interior decorating and even the psychology of home buyers and sellers. Some home stagers obtain training and certification through professional organizations. How to get started 1. Have a passion for decorating and making homes look good. 2. Look to take classes to learn more about staging homes, real estate, and decorating. 3. Network with local real estate agents and property managers to show off your skills. 4. Build a portfolio of homes you’ve staged for other clients. (Before and after pictures work get here!) 5. Make your family and friends your first clients! My Outlook I believe home staging is a growing and often under-valued opportunity for someone looking to start their own business. As long as there are real estate agents and apartment complexes, home stagers will be in demand.

They may be employed by fitness centers or work on a freelance basis. Most personal trainers are certified, and an increasing number of them hold associate's or bachelor's degrees in fields like exercise science or physical education. Personal trainers tend to start their employment by being paired with a more experienced trainer for on-the-job training. Skills + training you need There are several different paths you may take to become a personal trainer. Certification and postsecondary education programs are the most common. Certification is not always mandatory in order to work as a personal trainer; however, the vast majority of employers have policies requiring that personal trainers be certified. Certification is also beneficial for freelance trainers, who rely on reputation and word of mouth to obtain new business. How to get started 1. Research your State to see if there are education or certification requirements to become a personal trainer. 2. Take classes and pass State Exam. 3. It’s a good idea that you are physically fit and healthy. You are your best marketing vehicle as a personal trainer. 4. To get experience see if you can work part time or freelance at a gym. 5. Build up a portfolio of client results and experiences. 6. Consider using social media to show results, run challenges, and give free tips. My Outlook With the way many more people are becoming more health conscious about their bodies and the food they eat, I think this is a great business to start. You can easily set yourself up to be the expert. You can also consider niching down to pre-and postnatal women, brides, busy moms, etc.

Skills + training you need Your training or degree may depend upon which programs you choose to teach. For example, yoga and Pilates, have developed highly specialized instructor training programs in response to people getting injured after following untrained instructors. Zumba instructors also must be certified through their organization. It’s also very important to have a clean criminal record because you will be working with children and potentially, as a consultant for a school, daycare, or afterschool care program. How to get started 1. Check with your State and the program you’re interested in teaching to see if certification is needed. 2. Take courses and pass your exam. 3. I think this is a growing market that hasn’t be tapped into fully. The key will be to stay the course and offer high quality work AND that parents feel comfortable with their children being with you. Your reputation is KEY in this kind of business!

It's important to keep in mind that while interior decorators and interior designers are closely related, there are fundamental differences between the two. Interior decorators don't need any formal training or licensure, while the opposite is true for interior designers. Skills + training you need A degree is not needed to work as an interior decorator, but an associate degree is useful in getting started with your business. A seamstress' skills are versatile, so a person in this profession could work in dressmaking, gown design, handbag making or costume design. It's common for a seamstress to work with a tailor shop on a job-by-job basis or with other businesses that deal with clothing, such as dry cleaning shops that offer sewing services. Pet Sitter Your typical day Pet sitters provide daily care for pets while their owners are on vacation. Routine duties for a pet sitter include feeding, putting out fresh water, brushing pets, taking dogs on walks, and cleaning litter boxes. Mobile Pet Grooming Your typical day A mobile pet groomer does much more than just keep our pets looking and smelling nice. A pet groomer can be an important member of a pet's healthcare team by discovering potential problems early, such as ear infections, skin abnormalities or tooth decay. They have the advantage of coming to where their clients are located for pet grooming services! Skills + training you need There is no specific educational requirement for becoming a pet groomer, although training programs are available through online courses and some vocational schools. However, many people in this field have learned their skills through on-the-job training. Experience, more than formal training, is often considered the most important factor when customers are choosing a pet groomer. Skilled pet groomers know the grooming standards for all breeds of dogs, understand small-animal anatomy and know how to spot changes in a pet's hygiene that might indicate a health concern. Pet groomers who wish to own their salons may benefit from some training in the basics of business management as well. In addition to patience and genuine care for animals, a pet groomer must have high standards of cleanliness and professionalism. Excellent customer service skills are required, and pet groomers who own their own salons may also need good management skills if they employ other groomers or assistants. Dogs may be the animal to most commonly visit a pet groomer, but groomers should be prepared to care for cats and other pets as well. How to get started 1. Have a love for pets. 2. Have experience grooming pets. 3. Purchase or lease an RV or gutted school bus, then outfit it as a pet grooming salon. 4. Begin advertising in pet stores, veterinarian offices, local community apps, such as NextDoor, Craigslist, etc. 5.
