Transcript of I am an experience designer
I’m an experience designer
The creator of a dialogue between a person and a product, service or
system.
Disclaimer:
This presentation
is inspired by the books of:
Jon Kolko

Objects, services
and systems
that are commercially
successful are
not just useful…
…they have other
qualities that
make them
timeless…
…and/or
desirable.
The artist makes a statement
and the viewer responds.
A designer
creates the
dialogue
between
the user
and the
product.
We help the user
to experience
an emotion….
…and to
understand
the content
and context.
Who the user is,
really
matters.
Their culture…...
demographics……
environment……
…where
they
hang out
every day…
…where
they
spend
their
time
online…
…what
makes
them
tick…
…and
what
doesn’t.
“User centered design, as frequently practiced, often does
not truly give credence to the importance of the user. The
creation lies dormant until the user completely understands the
intellectual depth and feels the emotional qualities of what has
been designed.”.”(Jon Kolko)
Experience designer =
Designer of behaviour
Myth:
Interfaces such as the
web are primarily visual,
delivering brand
identity through
aesthetics.
Truth:
These interfaces
are primarily experiential,
where brand value
is delivered through
ease of use.
Some questions you
should be asking us…
What behaviour
is desirable
for my users
to have?
How can I alter
their existing
behaviour?
How do
my users
relate
to my
product?
What
are
their
needs?
What are my opportunities?
How can I make
my users loyal?
How do I get them
to adopt my new
product?
…and
how do I
get them
to love it!
We do this through…
User testing:
Listening, and
watching them.
Participatory design:
working together to
design the product.
Analytics:
measuring, benchmarking,
testing,
improving.
Storyboarding:
to understand
the processes.
Personas:
to help us
know your
users.
Evaluation:
so we can
improve.
Concepting:
to test lots of
ideas.
And many
more things
to ensure
your project
is successful.
Yes…
We’ll still make it
look clean
and cool…
…and
really
really
pretty.

Visual design
“Design is not just
what it looks like
and feels like.
Design is how it works.”
