My Course is Grammar
I am a student majoring in English. In studying English I taught about grammar.
Grammar is a compulsory subject that should be studied by every student of English.
Lecturer in my class is Drs. Amri Isyam, M.d. !ame of the course is grammar ". #his
course revie$s the tenses $hich had been covered in grammar % and grammar &, and
discusses adjective clauses, modals, passive voice, conditionals, gerunds and infinitives,
adverb clauses and noun clauses. It covers communicative e'ercises in oral and $ritten
forms. #his course is prere(uisite for advances grammar, and the learners )*+ may tae it
are only #hose $ho have passed the first grammar and grammar &.
Grammar is the set of structural rules governing the composition of clauses, phrases, and
$ords in any given natural language. #he term Also -efers to the study of tandard rules, and
this field includes morphology, synta', and phonology, +ften complemented by honetics,
semantics, and pragmatics.
#he term grammar is +ften used by non/linguists $ith a very broad meaning.*o$ever,
linguists use it in a much more specific sense. peaers of a language have a set of
internali0ed rules for using that language. #his is a grammar, and the vast majority of the
information in it is ac(uired/at least in the case of one1s native language/not by conscious
study or instruction, but by observing other speaers2 much of this $or is done during
infancy. Learning a language later in life usually Involves a greater degree of e'plicit
instruction.
#he term 3grammar3 can also be used to describe the rules that govern the linguistic
behavior of a group of speaers. #he term 3English grammar,3 therefore, may have everal
meanings. It may refer to the $hole of English grammar/that is, to the grammars of all the
speaers of the language in the $hich case, the term encompasses a great deal of variation.
Alternatively, it may refer only to $hat is common to the grammars of all, or of the vast
majority of English speaers 4-evie$s such as subject/verb/object $ord order in simple
declarative sentences5. +r it may refer to the rules of a particular, are relatively $ell/defined
variety of English 4-evie$s such as tandard English5.
3An English grammar3 is a specific description, study or analysis of tandard rules. A
reference boo describing the grammar of a language is called a 3reference grammar3 or
simply 3a grammar.3 A fully e'plicit grammar that e'haustively describes the grammatical
constructions of a language is called a descriptive grammar. #his ind of linguistic
description contrasts $ith linguistic prescription, an attempt to discourage or suppress some

grammatical constructions, $hile promoting others. 6or e'ample, the preposition stranding
+ccurs in Germanic languages, Instant confirmation and has a long history in English. 7ohn
Dryden, ho$ever, objected to it 4$ithout e'planation5, leading other English speaers to
avoid the construction and discourage its use.
