Proposed Shoulder Use
Northbound Inside Shoulder (no work on Southbound)
All traffic will be allowed to use shoulder lane in peak periods (no flexible delineators)
AM and PM peak hours to alleviate traffic queues and improve merging
Static and dynamic signing, lane markings, and overhead lane-use system included
Typical Section
Pavement Work Mill and overlay, restripe Northbound I-
495 within project limits Reconstruct outside shoulder to full depth
pavement Widen right shoulder at Georgetown Pike
Interchange to provide emergency pull off Pavement joint repairs for improved ride
and longer pavement life
Structures No major bridge work anticipated. Sound wall/retaining wall impacts under
evaluation. Pier protection will be upgraded at
overpasses within project limits Overhead dynamic and static sign
structures along median barrier and outside barrier
Concept of Operations
Advance DMS signs, static signs, overhead lane control signs, and striping to delineate shoulder lane
Light gray color for shoulder lane to provide contrast
Additional camera coverage and traffic detectors along Northbound I-495
Other Items During construction, no lane/shoulder
closures during peak hours. Minor drainage work anticipated Median barrier modifications to upgrade
to meet current standards No right-of-way or utility relocations
