HOW DOES IT WORK?

• The amount of energy produced is dependant on the height distance from where the water starts and where it hits the turbine, as well as the actual amount of water

• The height distance between the source and the water’s outflow is called the ‘head’

• To obtain better head, the water may be run through a large pipe, called a penstock before it goes through the water turbine, to maximise the water’s potential energy

• The turbine then powers the generator, which in turn creates useful energy

• WHEN WATER PASSES THROUGH THE TURBINES, IT OFTEN LOSES ALL OF ITS SEDIMENT CONTENT DUE TO LACK OF ENERGY, LEADING TO DEPLETED RIVER BANKS AND RIVER BED FURTHER DOWNSTREAM AND THEREFORE INCREASED EROSION

• ALTHOUGH MANY PEOPLE APPEAR TO BE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF IN THE COURSE OF LARGE-SCALE HEP PROJECTS, IT SEEMS THAT HEP IS MUCH BETTER OVERALL THAN ANY OTHER MEANS OF GENERATING ENERGY, DUE TO THE BALANCE BETWEEN ENERGY PRODUCED AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

• HOWEVER IF IT WERE TESTED UNDER THE 4 QUARTILES OF SUSTAINABILITY, IT WOULD BE CONSIDERED ‘UNSUSTAINABLE’
