description

This multimodal essay explores the rise of hybrid media in the entertainment industry. I have attempted question 1 here elaborating on the idea of hybrid media as proposed by Thornurn & Jenkins. By providing examples from different media forms this trend of media hybridization is studied. The design principle for the essay shows the hybrid nature of today's media. It uses design elements of films, comic books, graphic novels and movie story board. Since the essay mainly dwells on how other media forms are hybridized into moving images, I have embedded all the other media elements into a camera film roll. The layout however is inspired from comic books and graphic novels where images complement the text in telling the story. The last design element, which are the red boxes, inspired from movie story boards guides the user from start to finish of the essay.ByNIKHIL MOHANANU083978N

As Manovich puts it, these hybrids are not merely a sumof its parts but have in them intrinsic qualities which previously did not exist.

Another point worth noting is that these movies look like more the graphicnovels they were adapted from than traditional movies. The oldermedia forms evolve to give rise to these hybrid mediaforms. During this period of constant flux one can observemany interesting hybrid media forms. In the forefront of thismedia evolution is the entertainment industry.

However hybrid media is much more pervasive in the entertainmentindustry than one thinks. It is a mix of both digital graphics and live-action filming to add inspecial effects. Now a common practice in both TV shows and moviesgreen screen technology is now the most pervasive form of hybrid media.

A more recent trend is the introduction of user interaction to music. A recent exampleof this is by the artist Björk who released her album also as an iPad application for herlisteners to interact with the music. Other artists such as Arcade Fire and Chris Milk haveexperimented with internet browsers to provide an immersive way to experience music. The band We the Kings even added game play to the music video, incorporating elementsfrom video games and internet all into one fine example of hybrid media.

In all of the above cases internet acts much more than a platform, but as a mediumwhich adds additional flavour to the music experience. Also innovative attempts likethese provide novelty factor for the audience who constantly consume traditional media. It also boosts fan engagement and provides a great advertising platform for the banditself. With the internet constantly changing, its capabilities as a media form are stillbeing explored; hence we can expect more such innovative attempts in the future.

This hybrid revolution came about mainly due to better computing power and bettersoftware tools which enabled content creators to combine multiple media elements. While the monetary strength of the entertainment industry placed them in a goodposition to spearhead this new media revolution. And hence today we have this plethoraof hybrid media forms each catered to different audiences. With all media movingtowards the hybrid form, the possibilities seem endless...

There have also been attempts to combinemoving images with media forms such astypography and still photography, which wereonce associated with print media. A lot of theexamples can be seen in music videos whichare the hotbed for hybrid media.
