DEFINITIONS OF HYBRID COMMUNICATION NGNM:
• hybrid communication is the combination of frequency and time division duplexing with a single radio unit or
connector
5G-PPP:

• Digital / analog beamforming
C2C Communication Consortium:
• the combination of ITS-G5 and mobile radio communication (source, press release 23 Feb 2017)
Volkswagen Group research:
• The feature combination of ITS-G5 (licence exempt Spectrum) with 5G (New Radio) (lincenced spectrum in the 3.4-
3.6 GHz range

• The isolated car (no cellular connection)
• Analog telephone for voice
• Digital telephone for voice
• Digital telephone for voice and data (first telematic services)
• Developement of ITS-G5/IEEE 802.11p/C2C ad-hoc communication without cellular connections
• Mobile online services for data to be aggregated on a backend
HISTORY
4 | Volkswagen Group Research | A. Kwoczek 4
• Developement of LTE/V as a competion to ITS-G5 (competing for the same unlicenced Spectrum @5.9 GHz)
• Developement of 5G communication with new KPI‘s and a paradigmen change from cellular to device based
technologies
• Input from the vertical industries for the definition of 5G in addition to the KPIs announced by 5GPPP

ITS-G5 SPECTRUM
China:
• Parts of 5,9 GHz Spectrum
reserved for LTE-V
EU:
• Spectrum 30 MHz for Road Safety at 5,9 GHz available
• The Spectrum is technology agnostic
USA:
• For ITS there are 50+20 MHz designated
In the NPRM the first 10 MHz are designated for Car2Car via
802.11p
• 50 MHz are being discussed for WLAN 802.11ax
• The 5,9 GHz Spectrum is worldwide consistent reserved for Vehicle-2-Velehicle communication.
Other frequency ranges are not under discussion.
14 | Volkswagen Group Research | A. Kwoczek 14
• WRC 2015 announced the 5G-Pilot bands in the 3,4 to 3,6 GHz range
• In Europe an even wider range will be possible, on a long term perspective 3,4 to 3,8 GHz
• 700MHz (Digital dividend 2) was also confirmed as globally allocated for mobile communication
NEW SPECTRUM FOR NEW 5G-HYBRID-APPLICATIONS
15 | Volkswagen Group Research | A. Kwoczek 15
• ITS-G5 as a backbone for safety related Intelligent Transportion System usage @5,9 GHz
• Day 1 Applications
• Day 2 Cooperative Systems Communication
• 5G-Device2 Device Communication in the 3,4 to 3,6 GHz licenced bands for Quality of Service (QoS) and
prediction requirements
• Example: High Density Platooning, Teleoperated Driving
• 700MHz licenced channels for the control plane usage to coordinate the 3,4 -3,6 GHz user plane
• Additional ITS Channel(s) for future adhoc use cases that must be independend of any operator to
exchange sensor or crash mitigation data that might not fit into the 5,9GHz band
WAY FORWARD
16 | Volkswagen Group Research | A. Kwoczek 16
Infrastructure and silicon manufacturers:
Building new hardware for infrastructure and
vehicles
Automotive Industry:
automatic driving is the „next big thing“, Cooperative
Connected Driving makes automatic driving more
comfortable, data generation from vehicles to
improve high definition Maps
Smart Cities:
smooth traffic flow, less polution, more traffic
throughput to be attractive, parking
concepts outside the city
Operator:
more data traffic, edge cloud applications for traffic management,
business communication and navigation (QoS)
5G Stakeholder Interest
internet
CONCLUSION:
Hybrid communication is not coexistence in the same frequency band, or the same channel
Hybrid communication is the usage of cellular backend connection
with simultanous ad hoc communication in separated frequency
bands. One with a commercial use case, the other unmanaged,
independend of any operator for safety related applications
Volkswagens preferred technology for ad hoc communication is ITS-
G5 (802.11p), available in products by 2019
