Fellow Alumni and Colleagues,

I hope everyone has had a successful and healthy 2017 and looking forward to a wonderful Christmas and holiday season. Alumni Weekend is only a few months away - beginning on Thursday, February 1st through Sunday, February 4th. Registration is now open and if you register before 5pm on Monday, January 22nd, you will save $50. Please register early to assure your accommodations.

As always, Dr. Lori Gearhart has put together an outstanding agenda of speakers and continuing education. Our alumni staff of Scott Huffman, Charlene Phillips, and Abby Vinson always run an exceptional meeting and do everything in their power to assure everyone has a great experience.

In my opinion, this is the premier dental meeting in the state. The venue at the Hyatt Regency, excellent CE, class reunions, interaction with classmates and friends, opportunities to visit with the dean and faculty, sold out vendor exhibits, and much more make this an event you don’t want to miss.

I would also like to put in a plug for the student variety show on Saturday night. Dr. Filler and his students always put on an impressive display of talent. This show is sure worth the price of admission. Don’t delay! You can go ahead and register now plus renew your membership dues online.

Again, I am honored to serve as your president and am very proud to be an alumnus of The University of Alabama School of Dentistry. I hope to see all of you at Alumni Weekend 2018. Gratefully Yours,

Robert S. Jones DMDPresident, UASOD Alumni Association

Course Description

The prevalence of dental injuries has been shown to occur in approximately 10-50% of children between the ages of 7 to 12 years world-wide. These injuries occur primarily in the anterior region of the mouth. Maintenance of the vital pulp and an intact periodontal ligament following trauma are critically important for these young patients as tooth loss can result in devastating and long-term clinical, social and psychological repercussions. The management and consequences of luxation injuries are multi-factorial, and knowledge of the inter-relating healing patterns of these tissues is essential. For example, ankylosis and replacement resorption are frequently diagnosed following avulsion and severe intrusive luxation. The treatment of ankylosed permanent incisors following dental trauma present a clinical challenge particularly when it involves a growing child due to the high risk of infra-position and under-development of the alveolar bone. New approaches for the treatment of ankylosed teeth, including decoronation and bone augmentation for the preservation of alveolar ridge prior to permanent prosthetic reconstruction will be presented.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to: • Understand the etiology, diagnosis and differentiation of root resorption lesions • Apply current therapeutic approaches for the treatment of root resorption • Develop a comprehensive approach for the treatment of traumatically injured teeth and associated complications

Establishing & Maintaining Periodontal Health: What's Your Game Plan & Tissue Issues

Featured Speaker: Marc Miller, DMD, MSDate: Saturday, February 3Time: 8:30am – 11:30am CE Credit Offered: 3 Hours

About the Speaker

Dr. Marc Miller knows the importance of tradition and dedication – from following in his father’s footsteps by playing college football and into the dental profession, to serving in the United States Air Force.

For Dr. Miller, it all began as he grew up in Gadsden, AL. His father, Dr. Noah Miller, began practicing dentistry there in 1978, and Dr. Miller knew early on that he wanted to be in either dentistry or sports medicine. After high school, he attended the University of Alabama where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in biology. While there, Dr. Miller was a member of the Crimson Tide football team (1999-2002) and was the first third-generation Tide player. He was also awarded a health professions scholarship by the U.S. Air Force. Following dental school, he was accepted into one of the most esteemed periodontal residencies in the nation, obtaining a Master’s from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

After completing his residency, Dr. Miller joined the U.S. Air Force. He was assigned to Barksdale AFB in Shreveport, LA where he served as the Chief of Periodontics for the 2nd Dental Squadron. During his service, he was assigned to the largest dental clinic in the Air Force Global Strike Command, and taught periodontics to residents. Dr. Miller stays abreast of the newest technology in periodontics including laser periodontal therapy and Piezosurgery.

After 6 years of active duty service in the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Miller and his family recently moved to Mobile. Dr. Miller married his high school sweetheart, Anna Firestone, and they are blessed with three children: Annabelle, Bo and Emme.
