e The memories of summer vacations have slowly faded away. The kids have settled back into their regular school routine, and that typically means

mom and dad busy shuttling them around to after school activities. Sports season is in full swing and, thankfully, the heat and humidity are dropping a bit. Finally, we can enjoy family activities and gatherings with friends in our backyards again.

These cooler nights signal fall has arrived in South Florida, and that means Halloween is almost here. It’s time to decorate the house with “scary” lights to brighten

the spirits of our little ones (and sometimes not so little ones). Let’s have some fun while watching the neighborhood kids roam the streets dressed up in costumes.

Be sure to have your camera ready to take some pictures of your children enjoying the trick-or-treating tradition. These are the memories that last a lifetime.

Have a happy and safe Halloween everyone.

Sincerely,

Sven BudzischPublisher/Owner

Once upon a time, 2004 to be exact, there were a group of volunteers at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s

Hospital Foundation that spent their time advocating and raising funds for the hospital to support its mission to heal an individual’s body, mind and spirit. This spe-cial group calls themselves The Diamond Angels, and since their inception they have raised more than 3.5 million dollars.

Eleven years ago, The Diamond Angels of the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation created a special fundraiser which they are excited to announce again this year. The“12th Annual Fairy Tale Ball” will take place on Saturday, November 21st at 7:00pm at The Diplomat Resort & Spa on Hollywood Beach.

Guests will enjoy an evening in the ‘Big Easy’ as this year’s theme is “The Princess and The Frog”. The evening will feature a cocktail reception, dinner, dancing and auction. Traditionally, the highlight of the night is a musical headliner who will perform an intimate concert. Last year’s Fairy Tale Ball featured performances by the Gin Blossoms and also members of Billy Joel’s original band, led by singer Mike DelGuidice, Joel’s current backing vocalist and guitarist

“This year’s event comes with a cool New Orleans vibe and tells the story of a young girl trying to beat the odds and make dreams come true,” said Elizabeth

Jacobs, co-chair of the Fairy Tale Ball. “It’s what we wish for every child being treated at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.”

Proceeds from this event will benefit expansion projects at the children’s hospital that include the Wasie NICU, emergency department and the addition of four capac-ity-building floors to the DiMaggio facility.

The Fairy Tale Ball is sponsored in part by the Diplomat Resort & Spa and Ultimate Software. Additional sponsors include Sheridan Healthcare, Duty Free Americas, PNC Bank and the Memorial Healthcare System. Tickets to the ball are $250 per person and can be purchased at www.dia-mondangels.org. Sponsorship opportunities are also available through Kate Rodriguez at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation at 954-265-3454 or [email protected].

Established in 1994, the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation provides philanthropic support to JDCH by serving as the central agency for charitable contributions. This helps to ensure the ongoing availability of the highest quality of healthcare to hospital patients regardless of their ability to pay. For more information, visit www.jdchfounda-tion.org.

ws This month the Curci House will

transform its grounds to host its third annual pumpkin patch. This highly

anticipated fall event starts on Thursday, October 22nd and runs through Saturday, October 24th from 11:00am-5:00pm each day.

Guests big and small are welcome to take photos and play in the old fashioned patch while choosing the perfect pumpkin for carving or for Halloween decoration. Pumpkins of all sizes are available for purchase. Proceeds from the patch will go to restore Hallandale Beach’s historic structures.

The Curci House is one of Hallandale Beach’s historical landmarks. The Mediterranean-style home was built in 1924 by Frank and Rosina Curci on an 11-acre site. It was constructed with concrete terra-cotta block walls, Dade pine floors and imported Cuban tile. One of its most extraordinary features are the Italian colored glass which was imbedded in the exterior stucco finish.

The Curci family was one of Hallandale Beach’s pioneer families when they settled in 1907. They were able to build this home, now known as The Curci House, 17 years later by reinvesting their

farming profits into land purchases. They used this land for additional tomato fields and fruit groves. As their family grew to eleven children, so did their vision to build their dream home which they affec-tionately named “Villa Providence”.

In 1926 the Great Hurricane hit, and dozens of nearby residents had homes which were damaged or destroyed. However, “Villa Providence” survived with minimal damage and the Curci family took in many neighbors as they rebuilt their homes. The family lived in the home until the early 1950s. In 2013, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Each month this Hallandale treasure can be toured for free compliments of the Hallandale Beach Historic Preservation Board.

Tours are given on the first Saturday of every month between 11am and 4pm. The Curci House is located at 324 SW 2nd Avenue, Hallandale Beach – FREE admission, but donations are always accepted and appreciated. For more information call 954-457-1452.

It’s a “rUFF” life for Hollywood caninesby beverly Perkins

Recently, Hollywood residents and their furry 4-legged friends celebrated the grand open-ing of Hollywoof Dog Park. This is one of

Hollywood’s newest dog parks located at the Stan Goldman Memorial Park. This new addition to the rec-reational facility is Phase I of the park improvements.

The Hollywoof Dog Park is 20,000 plus square feet and includes fenced–in secured grassy areas for both large and small breed dogs. The park is also fully fur-nished with dog play and training equipment, fresh water troughs for drinking, dog themed park benches and waste bins along with new pedestrian walkways, signage and security lighting.

During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, attendees were treated to a Junkanoo band and canines were treated to some free K-9 treats from some local ven-dors. Hollywood elected officials then cut the ribbon and the pups and their peeps were off to explore the new park. Running leash-free, wading in pools and jumping on the exercise equipment allowed these dogs a “paws”-i-tively perfect afternoon.

Another great addition to the dog park are the bioswales. These bioswales capture water runoff from impermeable surfaces such as sidewalks and parking lots. The design and shape, along with the

native vegetation within the swale slows the flow of water allowing for partial filtration and then infiltra-tion into the groundwater. The native vegetation filters sediment, nutrients, oils and wastes to improve the quality and reduce the quantity of water enter-

ing the storm water system. Bioswales planted with native vegetation can also attract butterflies thus adding to the overall aesthetics of the area. This low cost, low maintenance, natural form of storm water management installed by The Department of Public Works Engineering & Architectual Services improves Hollywood’s water quality.

Other enhancements made to the Stan Goldman

Memorial Park include new entrance signage and pavement, additional parking for 15 vehicles, new fencing and gates, security lighting and landscap-ing. Along the water, the park is shaded by a mature tree canopy and features a picnic pavilion, restroom facilities and children’s playground equipment on an artificial turf safety surface. This major modification project began earlier this year with an estimated construction cost of $375,000.

Hollywoof Dog Park is located at 800 Knights Road in the Park East neighbor-hood in Hollywood and is open from dawn to dusk.  For more information on the Hollywoof Dog Park, please call the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts at 954.921.3404.

The IMPACT Young Ambassadors group is in its infant stage being just 6

months old. However, this exclu-sive group is already busy making a difference for Memorial and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundations. This group of young leaders want to ensure that the highest level of care is available today, and for generations to come.

The vision behind the group is to engage and bring together a new generation of professionals and leaders who are interested in philanthropy, networking and investing in their communities. They are searching for young leaders in the community who share the same drive, energy, passion and ambition who want to be a part of a results oriented organization. Currently at fifty mem-bers and growing, these young adults are community leaders, working profession-als, former patients, medical staff and physicians with a desire to play a major role as the next generation of support for Memorial Healthcare System.

Individuals can become members by making an annual contribution of $1,000 or more, with a $100 individual membership fee. Donations may be directed to the program(s) of the member’s choice, resulting in total transparency. Annual, quar-terly or monthly payment options are available. A philanthropic annual member-ship will provide an invitation to social gatherings, leadership events and fund-

raising opportunities. Additional benefits include exclusive invita-tions to Foundation & Healthcare System events, reduced tickets to Foundation events (when avail-able), recognition on donor wall, an annual report and the opportu-nity to serve in leadership roles.

This past summer IMPACT had a successful event with a private cocktail reception in Daniela’s Atrium at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. The Foundations’ board members along with IMPACT members and guests were able to tour the recently expanded Wasie Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) allowing them to better

understand the work and further connect to the cause. This month they are holding a “Mix & Mingle Networking Event” on October

22nd at the newly opened Margaritaville Resort on Hollywood Beach from 6:00-8:00pm in the License to Chill Rooftop Terrace Bar. This event will be free to mem-bers and a $20 donation for non-members. In the spring of 2016 they will be having their inaugural fundraiser.

The Foundations’ offices are located on the Hollywood campus of the Memorial Regional Hospital. For more information on how to get involved in IMPACT contact [email protected].

The South Florida Depression Glass Club was founded over 40 years ago. The purpose of the club is to promote an

awareness and appreciation of the American depression era glassware and to promote glass as a hobby. The club meets once a month and provides information on this histori-cal collectible through lectures, publications and exhibits.

Depression glass was manufactured from the late 20’s to early ‘40s by manufacturers that wanted to produce something cheerful and affordable in such a gloomy time. This mass-

produced glassware wasn’t exactly made of good quality, as they exhibited many flaws. However, the colors and patterns are what drew people to purchase them for as low as just a nickel. Sometimes food manufacturers, such as The Quaker Oats Company, would distribute them free of charge as incentives to make a pur-chase. Movie theatres and other businesses also used them to encourage sales.

Since the 1960s, this popular glassware has become highly collectible as it’s become extremely scarce. Rare pieces have been known to sell for several hundred dollars. Common colors are crystal clear, pink, blue, green and amber. Harder to find, and thus more valuable, are canary yellow, ruby and royal ruby red, black, amethyst, monax (a translucent white) which is sometimes confused with white milk glass.

Novice and advanced collectors are encouraged to attend the monthly gath-erings to share and learn about American made glassware, dinnerware and pottery. Meetings include a program presented by a member or a guest speaker, a “show and tell”, glass identification and of course, refreshments. The members are always available to speak at community events with displays where they can share their passion, pride and knowledge of their collections.

Since its inception in 1974, the club sponsors an Annual Show and Sale. This event provides an opportunity for dealers, collec-tors and the public to admire and learn about vintage glass. They also provide information about the American Glass Companies that cre-ated these antique treasures. The 42nd Annual American Glass, Pottery and Dinnerware Show and Sale will be held February 6-7, 2016. The Depression Glass Club hopes to continue shar-ing this interesting hobby which is rich in history.

The Depression Glass Club meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 6:30pm at the Fred Lippman Multi-Purpose Center in the shuffle board building - 2030 Polk Street, Hollywood 33020 - Join to learn more about vintage glass and pottery that is “Made in America”. For additional information call 954-964-8073 or visit the website at www. sfdgc.com.

T he South Florida Italian Culture & Heritage Festival (aka “SoFlaFeast”) will be coming to Hollywood this month. The much anticipated event will launch October 11th at ArtsPark at Young Circle. The festival was the created by

Joe Bevelacqua of Cobra Joe Productions and Anthony Paparella of Gino’s Market along with the cooperation of the City of Hollywood.

Bevelacqua and Paparella both wanted to develop a festival that highlights the best of Italian and Italian American culture in the region while creating an annual tradition that will continue for many more years. The event will coincide with Columbus Day celebrations since Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who made major contributions to our nation. This celebration will showcase the many ties South Florida has to Italy’s twenty diverse regions.

This inaugural event will feature local Italian restaurants, grocery stores, busi-nesses and organizations who will share their Italian heritage with the community, as well as live entertainment, classic and modern Italian cars and of course, deli-cious Italian food and wine tastings. Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital will dedi-cate an entire area for children to enjoy. Activities such as face painting, games and plenty of treats will be available to kids and tweens.

Other activities include traditional Italian games such as Bocce and multiple vendors with art and jewelry. Musical acts will be performing throughout the day on stage. The nationally recognized group, recently inducted into the Doo Woop Hall of Fame, The Mystics, will be one of the headliners. Various local nonprofit cultural organizations that work to support Italian culture will also be honored.

The festival producers are thankful for the encouragement they have received from the City. “SoFlaFeast is grateful for the support from the City of Hollywood, which has embraced the vision for festival as both an opportunity to support local business and to celebrate the ethnic heritage of many of its citizens who have contributed to its growth and development.”

The South Florida Italian Culture & Heritage Festival will take place on Sunday, October 11th from 12:00pm-8:00pm at ArtsPark at Young Circle on Hollywood Blvd. at U.S. 1 in Hollywood. For more information email: [email protected]. Proceeds from the SoFlaFeast will directly benefit the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH).

ws This summer, Emilio Benitez, CEO and

President of ChildNet, was named Administrator of the Year by the Florida

Coalition for Children (FCC). The FCC advo-cates on behalf of Florida’s abused, abandoned, neglected and at-risk children and supports the agencies and individuals who work on their behalf.

Each year the award is presented to a candi-date who has shown extraordinary efforts result-ing in their agency’s effective achievements meet-ing the needs of children, youth and families that they serve. Over several hundred child welfare providers and advocates gathered at the annual awards reception to celebrate these honorable and exceptional individuals. The reception also was a commemoration of the extensive accom-plishments the state has made since privatizing child welfare and transitioning to a community based care system more than ten years ago.

ChildNet is Broward County’s Community Based Care (CBC) lead agency, the single private non-profit entity responsible for administration of the local child welfare system under a contract with the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF). Benitez has been involved with the ChildNet agency since its inception. He served as first Chair of ChildNet’s Board of Directors and remained on the board until January 2007. In January of 2008, he was named President/CEO and has worked continuously and tirelessly to

ensure that the agency always benefits the fami-lies and children they serve.

Through fundraising and grant writing, Benitez has made exceptional strides in supple-menting service budgets and off-setting the reduced budget in Broward County. His leader-ship, passion for the cause and level of involve-ment has helped the organization continue to uti-lize and implement innovative technology, quality initiatives and new programs to promote great advancement and results in the effectiveness of their mission to protect abused, abandoned and neglected children in the communities they serve.

“It is an incredible honor to be recognized for a cause I am so dedicated to, but I would be amiss to not credit the exceptional team at ChildNet,” said Benitez, who leads ChildNet in Broward and Palm Beach counties. “Everything that we have done to help children in the child welfare system is because of the commitment and passion the ChildNet team exudes day in and day out to help Florida’s most vulnerable population. I am proud of everything that we have accomplished and look forward to continu-ing to meet the needs of the abused, abandoned and neglected children in our community.”

Prominent Hollywood attorney and com-munity leader, David

Singer, had success once again with his signature American Cancer Society fundraiser, Jail & Bail. This was the 24th year of this annual event, and the results were astounding at more than $45,000. The three month fundraiser concluded with a trip aboard the Up-the-River Cruise on the triple-decker Biscayne Lady yacht.

Hundreds participated to raise funds for the much needed cause. It began with a week of “jailing” at the Westin hotel in late June. Participants included Miss Hollywood U.S.A., Jacqueline Garcia-Casals, who raised more than $1,000 on her first day, Former Miami Dolphin and Football Hall-of-Famer Dwight Stephenson and The Fort Lauderdale Strikers mascot. This year’s honorary chairs were Rep. Lois Frankel and Rep. Ted Deutch. Broward County. Law enforcement was well represented with the Sheriff Scott Israel and State Attorney Mike Satz lending their annual support.

Guests who set sail aboard the Biscayne Lady enjoyed a warm South Florida evening as they sailed around the Fort Lauderdale waterways. They also partici-pated in silent and live auctions.

Certain items attracted a lot of attention: “Sheriff For A Day”, which gives a bid-der an inside look at Scott Israel’s duties, “Breakfast With The Manager” will allow the lucky winner and 5 friends to have breakfast with the longtime manager of the

Miami Marlins, Jack McKeon, plus several designer purses stocked with surprise items such as gift cards and jewelry.

“Every year the Up-the-River Cruise is a highlight of the summer charity sea-son,” said Singer. “Up the River was fortunate to have great sponsors like Lipton Toyota, Coldwell Banker Realty, Mayback & Hoffman Law Firm, LRI Process Serving, Kerney & Associates, Exults, Empire Imaging, Sun Trust Bank and

County Line Chiropractic. But I have to give a special thanks to our Presenting Sponsor, CiTiMed - one of the premier deliverers of trauma health services in South Florida. Auction Chair, Jo Walters and her committee were also indispensable to our suc-cess. This wonderful event puts us one step closer to eradicating cancer.”

This year’s festivities pushed Singer’s lifetime fundraising efforts for the charity to over the

$4.5 million mark-a figure unfathomable when the event started 24 years ago. All proceeds raised through the Jail and Bail events will be used to support research, education and patient services.

For more information, David Singer can be reached at 954-920-1571 or toll free at 1-800-ASK-FREE, or visit http://www.1800askfree.com.

ws The Miami Dolphins unveiled their “2016

Swimsuit Calendar” last month at the newly renovated Sun Life Stadium. This is

the third consecutive year the squad started the announcements online during a six week period until the actual annual event took place which included a swimsuit fashion show along with the presentation of the 2016 calendar.

Hollywood born native, Jacey, a third-year vet-eran Dolphins cheerleader, was announced as Miss July 2016. This marks her second appear-ance in the Miami Dolphins Swimsuit Calendar. She formerly held the “Miss July 2015” title. The difficult decision of only choosing twelve cheer-leaders is done by the staff as the girls are not at all involved in the process, but they all cheer each other on.

Being a Dolphins cheerleader is not as easy as it may appear. These girls have to be dedi-cated to an intensive practice and game sched-ule while maintaining a healthy active lifestyle and life outside the team. During the season, they practice three times a week for three hours each night. This allows those who work full-time and/or attend school full-time a manageable balance of their responsibilities. In the offseason practice may take place to prepare for a tour overseas or for a local performance.

Being a Miami Dolphin Cheerleader has also given Jacey many opportunities to work in the

community. She has participated in 5k runs for charities and Miami Dolphins Foundation events, such as back to school shopping with less fortunate children. She finds these events to be the most rewarding and memorable.

Besides cheering on the sidelines, Jacey always enjoyed working with children and has done so through volunteer work and working previously as a pre-school teacher. However, she was most inspired by her Early Childhood Education teacher in high school and decided to follow in this passionate teacher’s footsteps. Jacey is now a proud graduate of FIU with a degree in elementary education. She currently teaches at a therapy center for children with learning disabilities in Davie. She also loves to spend her time with good company or a good book.

When asked if she loves football, Jacey responds by saying, “I love football! Definitely my favorite sport of all. Growing up my entire family were huge Dolphins’ fans so I’ve always been a part of the lifestyle. Now, I am just lucky enough to watch from the best seat in the house!”

reconstructive Surgery: the Other Plastic Surgeryby Jorge a. Perez, M.D., F.a.C.s.

Plastic surgery is booming, though most people associate plastic surgery with cos-metic procedures. However, formal plastic

surgery training includes reconstructive surgery as well. Chances are many of you have come in contact with plastic surgery, but the other kind. Reconstructive surgery includes restoration of form or function following injury, disease or defor-mity. Accidents, infection, cancer, birth defects and developmental abnormalities can all create deformities that require reconstruction by plastic surgeons.

Do I need a Dermatologist or a Plastic Surgeon? Patients often ask if a particular skin condition is best treated by a der-

matologist or a plastic surgeon. I defer diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of rashes, moles and other skin disorders to the dermatologist. The plastic surgeon plays a role if surgery is necessary or desired. Though there are many talented dermatologists in South Florida with advanced training and skills in minor surgical procedures, most dermatologists will refer complex cases, those with more aesthetic impact, such as the face or children, to a plastic surgeon. If a patient requests a plastic surgeon, the dermatologist will usually oblige.

The Uninsured or High Deductible Patient

The issue of healthcare reform for the uninsured has received much attention recently. The Affordable Care Act ostensibly was intended to make insurance available for those previously unin-sured. The ACA has been a huge windfall for HMOs. An unintended consequence of these reforms, however, is that many patients, previ-ously with good insurance, now find themselves with high deductibles, rendering them functionally uninsured. A patient with a $6,000 deductible, requiring a $3,000 surgery is saddled with the worst of both worlds; paying out of pocket and forced to choose from a limited list of HMO contracted doctors.

Another Option Exists…Plastic surgeons with busy, successful cosmetic practices often choose not

to participate with insurance plans. This leaves patients with limited options when choosing from an HMO plan provider list. Our office has not partici-pated with insurance plans for more than 20 years. However, patients seeking high quality care with shorter wait times and more personalized service often opt to have their procedures outside of their HMO network. For these patients our office has developed an all-inclusive, flat fee program. Even on-line con-sultation is available.

Patients requiring minor reconstructive procedures such as torn earlobes, unsightly moles, non-melanoma skin cancers, scar revision, and more, can now be treated outside of their restrictive HMOs, affordably, by top surgeons with fees often significantly less than their deductibles.

Dr. Perez is a graduate and former faculty member of The Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He has been selected among Castle Connolly/U.S. News and World Report’s America’s Top Doctors every year since 2000 (again for 2015-2016). He has lectured internationally and been fea-tured as a plastic surgery expert for major media outlets. A limited number of personalized consultations are offered by appointment only, call 954-351-2200. To learn more about the practice visit www.PerezPlasticSurgery.com.

rt The eyes are the first thing we notice when

we meet someone. Beautiful eyes can make up for other features that are less than ideal.

Likewise, eyes that are tired, droopy, or puffy may not reflect a vibrant inner self. It is often said that the earliest signs of aging are around the eyes. Perhaps people are always questioning whether or not you had a good night’s sleep, because your eyes are swollen with bags. Fortunately, at the Weston Cosmetic Surgery Center, we can give you dramatically younger looking eyes through “eyelid lifts,” also known as blepharoplasty.

A primary reason for droopy eyes is simply due to age. It can also be hereditary. As everything droops, so do the eyebrows. As the outer part of the eyebrows droop, the skin of the upper eyelids will look saggy, as if you had developed extra skin that was not there several years before. Trimming this “extra” skin can drastically improve that droopy look. Another reason for “tired eyes” is because of droopy or migrating eyelid fat. This fat is held back by a thin wall of fibrous tissue called the orbital septum, which weakens over time. The fat, held firmly back by this wall in youth can bulge with age, giving you

“baggy” upper and lower eye-lids. Blepharoplasty trims this extra fat and tightens the wall, restoring a youthful contour.

For those patients with puffi-ness under the eyes or baggy upper and lower eyelids, laser eyelid surgery can reduce and often eliminate these problems. The end results are a more alert and youthful look around the eyes.

The prominent fat pockets can be removed from a hidden incision along the inside surface of the eyelid. This “no stitch,” no external scar technique is utilized when patients have fat prominence of “eyelid bags” alone without excess or sagging eyelid skin. If minimal excess skin is present, a skin pinch technique is combined with transconjunctival fat removal. In this case, a “pinch” of lower eyelid skin is removed. These techniques typically result in less swelling, less discomfort, and shorter recovery time. I will assess which technique is ideal for your eyes during your personal consultation.

Recovery from eyelid surgery usually takes seven to ten days. Sunglasses allow you to go out in public immediately after surgery, and make-up can be worn within about one week. Normal activity can be resumed within a few days, and exercise can be resumed within 14 days after surgery.

If the eyes looking back at you in the mirror are not reflecting how you are feeling, it might be time to consider a blepharoplasty.

s School has started along with the heavily anticipated football season, but some children were not so fortunate to be prepared with the right gear for their big “game day”. The Miami Dolphins football team became aware of

this and wanted to take time off from the field to help make a difference. As a result, they decided to host a “Back to School Backpack Event” at Dave & Buster’s in Hollywood last month where all attendees left as winners.

More than 100 students from McNicol Middle (Broward), Palm View Elementary (Broward), South Miami Heights Elementary (Dade), Pine Lake Elementary (Dade) and Crosspointe Elementary (Palm Beach) enjoyed a DJ, arcade games, dinner and a backpack filled with color pencils, pens, notebooks, loose leaf paper, folders, index cards, pencils, glue sticks, highlighters and a Dolphins supply pouch.

Dolphins players, cheerleaders and mascot T.D. were on hand to distribute the backpacks to these students from the tri-county area. These children from Title 1 schools in Broward, Dade and Palm Beach County schools were selected by their principals. Besides receiving backpacks filled with school supplies, they were given Dolphins t-shirts and had the opportunity to interact and play arcade games with some of the Miami Dolphin players.

Some of the Dolphins players available for this event were Chris McCain, Kenny Stills, Jordan Kovacs, Michael Thomas, Ced Thompson and John Denney.

Suzet Hernandez, principal at South Miami Heights Elementary, spoke about the impact this event has on her students: “We have some children that are home-less. We have some children that come from very low income families, they have very little to eat. So we know who we have in school and based on that we make our selection.”

“A lot of our students love football,” Hernandez said. “Some of them don’t have a father figure at home, so being with the Dolphins players and having a role model is a great opportunity for them to know that there is a future out there for them. And by staying in school, they can certainly accomplish that.”

“I think it was really important for me to get involved because I don’t really remember having the greatest time shopping for school supplies or ever having an NFL team pass out backpacks in my area,” Stills said. “It’s been really cool to come and get the kids excited about going back to school and helping the kids with school supplies, playing games and just spending time with them.”

watermelon is a one and a half year old domestic short hair feline. His favorite person is his nanny and his favorite toy is his stuffed monkey, Marvin. He likes looking out the window for blue jays, eating liverwurst, cuddling and Halloween. However, he dislikes vacuums and the real Housewives of beverly Hills, since his human mom pays far too much attention to it.

His favorite thing to do is chill out and relax. He was last seen doing just that on his hammock.
