ALL ABOUT NNLC
NNLC Charter CLUB PURPOSE
The purpose of the New Neighbors League Club
(NNLC) is to bring together the new neighbors
of the area so they may meet and become friends
while adjusting to new surroundings. The Club is
a not-for-profit social organization with a variety
of interest groups and special activities, including
monthly luncheons and speakers.
HISTORY
NNLC is the official social club of New
Neighbors League, Inc. (NNLI), which was
founded in Dayton, Ohio in 1939 by Theodore R.
Briggs. Out of the business of greeting new
residents grew a recognized need for a social
organization allowing newcomers to meet others
who were also new to the area. Theodore’s wife,
Bunny, lived in many cities throughout the
United States and knew the loneliness associated
with moving into unfamiliar areas. With the aid
of the Ohio Federated Women’s Club, the
Constitution and By-Laws for NNLC were
drafted. The first chapter was chartered in
Cincinnati, Ohio in 1943. As the greeting service
operations were established, new club chapters
were founded. Dayton was home for New
Neighbors League until 1986 when Corporate
and Club Headquarters were moved to Atlanta,
Georgia and Cheryl Beaudreault assumed the
position of National President. Currently, there
are fourteen operations nationwide. Each chapter
operates independently within established
guidelines and under the direction of a local
Board of Directors and a Club Director.
MEMBERSHIP
Membership in NNLC is open to any local woman wanting to meet new people and
make new friends in the community. Prospective
members should attend a Welcome Coffee held on the first Tuesday of the month. There are two
parts to the initial membership fee. First, a one-
time lifetime membership fee of $25.00 to join
NNLC with transfer privileges to any sister chapter; this fee is forwarded to National Club
Headquarters. Second, there is a $25
membership fee that remains with the local
chapter to cover administrative expenses (this amount is pro-rated according to the month
joined). On-going members will pay a $25
annual fee each year in January.

Coffee
Moving into a new community can be exciting, overwhelming, and often times, lonely. NNLC can help make the transition easier by helping women find new friends and
activities. If you know of someone new to the area, invite her to join us at the monthly coffee where she can learn more about
everything NNLC has to
offer.
The next coffee is:
Tuesday, February 4th at
9:30am at St. Louis County Library, Daniel Boone Branch, 300 Clarkson
Road, Ellisville, MO 63011. Meet in the Red Room. (Parking on the north side (lower end) makes for easier access to meeting
rooms.)

This can be served with grated parmesan cheese sprinkled on top. If you make a large amount of
this soup, it freezes very well.
Stay warm ladies and I hope this recipe becomes one of your favorites. I attained this recipe (which through the years I have tweaked) from an Italian man that worked for my husband when he was President of Ruger Gun Company and we lived in New
Hampshire.
I hope this year is a happy and very healthy one for you, your loved ones and friends. Also I wish you
all a Happy Valentine’s Day

GREETINGS
LADIES:
Here it is February 2014 and I am sure my message to you this time might seem a little unusual but it
is very cold today, 25 degrees, so I am thinking about a great soup recipe that is tasty, hardy, easy to make and delicious
I hope you enjoy this and it will very much help to warm you up.
DONNA'S ITALIAN SAUSAGE, BEAN, KIELBASA SOUP
~2 or 3 cans of beans (any kind or a mixture): such as pinto, kidney, black beans, etc. ~1 package of frozen chopped creamed spinach (thawed) ~2 cans (at least) Italian stewed tomatoes. (If you can't find Italian stewed tomatoes, regular stewed tomatoes are just fine). ~1 LB Kielbasa, cut up into bite sized pieces
~1 LB Italian sausage, browned (this can be hot, sweet or mild--your choice) ~Salt & Pepper to taste
~Cooking Sherry, a few dashes
~1 Large Onion---chopped
~Garlic---minced to taste
Brown meats, onion and garlic in a skillet until done and soft. At the same time, in a large Dutch oven, cook beans, spinach, tomatoes, salt, pepper and sherry until hot & well mixed. (This can also be done in a crock pot) Add cooked meat mixture to the Dutch oven, stock pot or crock pot. Cook all together for at least 1 hour (the longer the better). If prepared in a crock pot cook on low for at least 2 hours. Add water if or when needed to make soup consistency you prefer. More tomatoes can be added to make it more soupy. Never use tomato sauce.
Happy February to all my NNLC friends. I hope everyone is getting used to writing the year 2014 on their checks, datebook, and assorted
correspondence. I know I have to really think when I write down the
date.
On the matter of dates… The club is making a change to our yearly calendar by moving the date of installation of new officers and board members from April to May and from October to November. By doing this, installation will not interfere with our annual festivities at luncheons taking place in October (Halloween costume contest) or April (annual hat parade and spring fund raiser). We hope this will streamline the “meeting” portion of the luncheon.
More dates to remember… our 2014 spring fund raiser is just two months away. This year we will NOT be holding an auction as our fund raiser, instead we are planning a
lovely luncheon, with a fashion
show by Chico’s, and our
annual Hat Parade to be held at the Forest Hills Country Club on April 15th. Please watch the Happy Wanderer for details and plan on joining us for fashion, fun and friendship. (This will be a great luncheon to invite your friends, mother, mother-in-law, daughters, sisters, aunts, nieces, etc., to attend.) Be sure to SAVE THE DATE.
I hope to see you soon at a
luncheon, activity or event.
In Fun and Friendship, Gay Hampton, President 636-329-1044 [email protected]

NEW GROUPS FORMING
New Bridge Group FormingNew Bridge Group FormingNew Bridge Group FormingNew Bridge Group Forming
We seem to have some interest in starting a new bridge group for intermediate players. It will likely be on Wednesday afternoons or possibly mornings on one Wednesday per month. Typically it will be held in members homes and last about 3 hours. The details can be worked out with the group after we get started. Please call me at (620) 242-4676 or
email me at [email protected] indicating your interest. We would like to start as soon as possible, playing sometime in February. Several people have already shown an interest and we would like to have eight regular players with a sub list also. Please send your name again even if you have contacted me already so no one is left out. It will be a great opportunity to enjoy bridge and meet some new people with a common interest. This group could also decide to meet in a public meeting place if the group prefers that
option.

QUILTS OF VALOR
One of our NNLC members, Elaine Camp, participates in the Quilts of Valor group of Eastern Missouri. Since 2003, this organization has been making and presenting quilts to American veterans who have been in combat for our nation. Over 92,250 quilts have been given to veterans. Elaine will be giving the NNLC luncheon program on February 18th. The veteran needs to have served in combat (but not necessarily injured) to receive a “Quilt of Valor”. Their name will be recorded by the National Organization of Quilts of Valor. Elaine has forms that one can submit to Quilts of Valor ([email protected]). NNLC has made a donation to “Quilts of Valor” which will help defray the cost of shipping quilts to Hospitals, Clinics, Military bases and
individuals.

LUNCHEON COST INFO & NNOM FORM
Every once in awhile someone questions the pricing of our luncheons (saying things like,
“Seems like a lot of money for soup and salad” or something like that.) We thought it might be
good to explain everything involved in calculating the price of a typical luncheon.
A list of all of the items we have to pay for BEFORE we choose the entrée would look like
this: 18% gratuity, 8% tax, $3.00 per drink for each attendee (whether or not ½ of the ladies have only water) and $4.00 dessert. After all of these amounts are taken out, THEN we see how
much we can spend on the entrée. This, of course, assumes there is no program or tour expense.
With all of this said, here is what it looks like for a typical $19.00 luncheon:
We hope this illustration helps you understand how the process of setting up luncheons works.
Lynne Foss and Jill Glaus
$19.00
Gratuity per attendee $3.42 $15.58
Tax per attendee $1.52 $14.06
Drink per attendee $3.00 $11.06
Dessert per attendee $4.00 $7.06
Amount left for each Entrée $7.06

Bunco • Golf • Tennis • Book Clubs • Wine and Dine • Couples Dining • Ladies’ Evening Out ...The list goes
on and on.

ST. LOUIS TRIVIA
“THE HILL”
The Hill is a must to visit in St. Louis. Located just a bit south of Forest Park, it’s a 50 square block Italian neighborhood on the highest point in St. Louis—thus “The Hill”. It has a interesting history and absolutely fabulous restaurants where you can enjoy authentic Italian cuisine. Even the fireplugs, which set a colorful boundary for the neighborhood, are painted red, white and green. In the mid 1800s, many Italian workers came to the area, living in boarding houses near local clay mines; then families followed. Baseball’s Yogi Berra and Joe Garagiola grew up on these streets. Row upon row of tiny, neatly kept houses with equally tiny yards squeeze close to the street, and neighborhood restaurants, shops and taverns dot many corners. Dave and I used to go down to the Hill to Volpi’s Market to buy salami for Dave’s very Italian dad for his birthday and Christmas, and while there always picked up sandwiches from Amighetti’s Bakery-
yum! The Missouri Baking Co. has scrumptious cannelloni! And the restaurants!!! Zia’s, Charlie Gitto’s, Dominic’s, Cunetto’s and more ~ I only know one way to get there: from Hwy 64/40 or I-44 I go south on Kingshighway and just south of I-44 I take a narrow street on the right that almost looks like an alley straight down to Dagget St. Voila—I’m on The Hill! Use your GPS-
it’s probably more accurate. But go!

SHARE YOUR EXPERTISE
Anyone can start a new group activity—lunch or dinner group, cards, whatever...
Also, activities within the club do not have to be on-going ventures. You could give us a tour of some-where in the area that might be fun to
go-like Soulard Market for example.
We know a lot of you have expertise in a variety of fields. In addition to our activity groups, we’re also look-ing for people who can share that expertise in a workshop. Would you be willing to run a couple hour train-ing session on something you are good at like web page development, or closet organization, or furniture refinishing? We would really love to see your skills. The process is the same as that for starting a group. Just send a description of what you plan to cover, a date and location to meet and some contact information to the Hap-py Wanderer Editor. Be sure to give people enough advance notice so they
can RSVP to you.
We all have hidden talents. Care to
share yours with us?
