HW Blog: Unlocking Keywords:
Our Best SEO Tricks For 2015
Last week, we talked about the importance of using long-tail
keywords -- you know, the 3-5 word phrases search engine
users type to identify more specific requests. But let's take that
concept a step further.
You know what long-tail keywords are (at least, you will after
reading this post) but we get a lot of questions about them.
How often do we use long-tail keywords? Where do we put
them? How can they work to increase our content’s value? How
do these keywords fit into a larger search engine optimization
(SEO) strategy?

First, long-tail keywords must be used with frequency
throughout your company’s online presence. For each of your
pages, you want to be hyperspecific on one topic; including that
subject and its keywords in not only the content, but in every
area connected to the content. Some best practices include
using your long-tail keywords in the site’s title tag, header, URL,
image alt text, and of course, the actual content.
Second, and even more important, focus on your placement of
your long-tail keywords.
Your company will not see results
by merely placing your keywords in
as many areas as possible. It not
only looks spammy to users but
Google continues to get smarter
by the day, making it imperative to
place your keywords in the right
spots. Google’s key areas are
broken down to your site’s meta description and headers as the
most important. Body copy, sidebars and footers take the last
priority.
Focus on your site's actual content meaning. While long-tail
keywords' frequency and placement can be useful on their
own, Google has begun placing more and more value on your
site’s worth and meaning. Work towards more compelling
content by being creative in how you convey your message. You
are not constricted to your exact long-tail keywords, so be
creative and develop numerous synonyms and ways to explain
what you do without sounding repetitive or formulaic.

Last, think about your
keywords in the context of
who will be searching for
your product or service.
While research and data
can feel robotic and
socially detached, all of
your efforts should go
toward providing excellent services and content that your
customer is searching for. Google will honor these efforts and
hopefully your customers will find you site more attractive and
effective.
