"I have had one student graduate from HVL and have another one attending. The college that my graduate is attending says he has a good foundation for writing and also has a good foundation in other subjects. HVL offers many opportunities to each student. The teachers are willing to go the extra mile with students to help them to be successful and prepared for college."

After prayerful consideration, Mrs. Kirsten Kasten has declined our call to serve as the choir director for the 2018-2019 school year. We thank her for the wonderful work she has done with our choir and wish her God's blessings.
As you may know, Miss Grace Mattek is
retiring at the end of this school year. In
order to fill her position, the HVL Board of
Regents has begun the process to call for
a replacement. Recently, Mrs. Rebecca
Jahns declined our call to serve. The
board will be meeting to extend a call in
the future. Please keep HVL in your
prayers.

Click, clack, click, clack. The wheels of the transcontinental express, the f irst engine to travel the transcontinental railroad from start to f inish, rumble below me, as I ride this train on its journey through history. Out the window, in the distance, I see a tunnel f il led with darkness. I look to the left, and I see a bloody battle between the motherland and the rebels of the 13 colonies, the air dark with a thirst for power, but also a hunger for freedom. I look out to the right and see the American f lag, a symbol of l iberty and justice, f lying proudly above Independance Hall, as the forefathers sign the constitution, creating the basis and model for what this country ought to be. Click, clack, click, clack. She rides on toward the tunnel. I feel her wheels rumbling beneath me as she presses on through history. Again, I look out the window and see brothers kil l ing each other and hatred running through the land of Gettysburg which runs red with the blood of families and friends. I can look at the slaughter no longer and turn to look out the other window to see families reunited after countless years of separations because of slavery. Children hugging their mothers; fathers kissing their daughters. Click, clack, click, clack. She travels onward into the darkness of the tunnel, and stil l I feel her wheels rumbling beneath me. A few hours pass, but stil l onward she presses toward the tunnel. I look to the left again. I see a date that will l ive in infamy, as warships of the United States fall into the dark waters of Pearl Harbor, as planes continue to f ly overhead. I quickly turn away and look out the window on my right. There I see remnants of a wall that divided a foreign nation and stood for hatred. Families separated for many years are meeting again, hugging, crying, all over the debris left by the broken wall. Click, clack, click, clack. Stil l the transcontinental express presses onward, toward the unknown of the tunnel on the horizon. Staring into the darkness of the tunnel, pondering what waits inside, something out the left of the widow grabs my attention. American soldiers returning from a long hard war in Viet Nam and being spit on. Their faces shocked as they are totally disrespected after f ighting for the name of freedom. I look even further into the distance and see two towers, one of them on f ire. As the towers collapse, tears f il l my eyes as while I think of all the innocent people dying because of hatred. Unable to look at the landscape covered in hatred and self ishness, I turn to the other window, but I am surprised by the rainbow colored f lags f lying proudly above the United States Supreme Court building, signaling that equality has made yet another step of progress. The true American dream of rights for all people has prevailed. Click, clack, click, clack. She is at the tunnel and I no longer feel her wheels rumbling beneath me. What is beyond the curtain of gloom that this tunnel veils its face with? What darkness awaits on the other side? Sitt ing in my seat, contemplating the unknown before me, I recall what I have just witnessed, and I do not fear the tunnel. I am not terrif ied by the facts of the past, for I have hope. Through all of its terrible events of its past, has not the American f lag stood proud? Has she given up in despair? Once again I look into the tunnel, I look into the future, and
I see an American f lag f lying proudly, shining amongst the darkness of the unknown. This journey on the continental
express through history is my hope for the future of America. She travels along the rails of t ime, toward the darkness of the unknown future, the unwritten pages of history. She always presses onward through shadows and
into the light. Just as she travels through time, so has this great nation. The active duty soldiers, the veterans, the
workforce, the polit icians, the youth, and all other peoples of America have all seen dark days of her history. However, the legacy remains. The legacy of wanting better for our children and for each other. It began with the framers of the constitution as they wrote that promise of forming a more perfect union, and it continues today, with us. This is American History. This is my hope for the future.
Nathan had the privilege of representing HVL and our district at the State Voice of Democracy Essay Contest. He was one of 12 district winners at the state level. Nathan's oral essay entry was selected as the Runner Up in the State Voice of Democracy Essay Contest! Nathan, along with his Mom and Dad,
had a great expense paid weekend in Kalamazoo. Nathan also received another $4,000 in scholarships for his Runner Up f inish!
CONGRATULATIONS, NATHAN PRIESKORN
