The GaMe:After a 33-day stretch since its previous away game, the Washington football team(2-2 overall, 0-1 Pac-12) returns to the road this week for a Thursday night game at USC (3-1, 1-1

Pac-12). The game kicks off at 6:00 p.m. PT and will air live nationally on ESPN. The Huskies haven

played the Trojans the last two years (thanks to the Pac-12s division schedules) and last faced

USC in 2012 at CenturyLink Stadium in Seattle. Following the USC game, the Huskies will return

home for its annual border battle against Oregon, Oct. 17 at Husky Stadium.

QUICK hITTeRS:The Huskies most recent Thursday game was the a 2012 meeting with Stanforda 17-13 Husky win at CenturyLink Field ... the 2011 Alamo Bowl (a loss to Baylor) and a 2010 regular

season game vs. UCLA (a UW win at Husky Stadium) were also played on a Thursday ... the onlyother regular-season, post-World War II Thursday game in UW history was the season-opener a

BYU in 1999 ... Washington has played 10 true freshmen play this season: OL Trey Adams, LB Tevis

Bartlett, QB Jake Browning, LB Ben Burr-Kirven, TB Myles Gaskin, DB Austin Joyner, WR Chico

McClatcher, DB Jordan Miller, WR Quinten Pounds and WR Isaiah Renfro ... Washingtons curren

roster includes 52 freshmen (true and redshirt) and 24 sophomores, as compared to 13 seniors ..

33 Huskies made their home debut in the UWs win over Sacramento State ... Browning was the

first true freshman ever to start a season opener at quarterback for Washington ... he was the firs

true freshman QB to start in any game since Marques Tuiasosopo vs. Oregon in 1997, which was

until this year, the only true freshman QB start in modern UW history ... Brownings 368 passing

yards vs. Utah State were most ever by a UW freshman (true or redshirt) ... Gaskin rushed for 146

yards vs. Sacramento State, third-most yards ever by a UW true freshman (Joe Steele, 157 vs

Oregon, 1976; Willie Hurst, 155 vs. UCLA, 1998) ... Husky Dante Pettis returned a punt 76 yards fo

a touchdown at Boise State, his second career punt return for a TD (he went 87 yards Nov. 1, 2014at Colorado) ... hes the first Husky to compile two punt returns for TDs since Charles Frederick in

2002 and 2003 ... in four games so far, UW special teams have blocked a punt, a PAT and a field

goal, returned a punt for a touchdown and also run a fake field goal in for a TD ... in 2008, 2009

and 2011, the UW faced its former head coach on the field (Rick Neuheisel at UCLA in those three

instances), as the Huskies will do this week .. . prior to those three, the last time it had happened

was in 1975, when Darrell Royal (UW head coach in 1956) and Texas took on the UW.

The heaD COaCh: Chris Petersen, who has built a reputation as an of-fensive innovator who carried the Boise State football program to its highesthighs, was finally swayed to take on a new challenge when he agreed tobecome head coach of the Huskies in December of 2013. In his first seasonat Washington, Petersen led the Huskies to an 8-6 record and a berth in theTicketCity Cactus Bowl. He became the fastest active FBS coach to reach 100career victories doing so in 117 games and tied with Knute Rockne forfifth fastest all-time after a win over cross-state rival Washington State in the

Apple Cup. Petersens Built for Life coaching philosophy has been embracedon and off the field by the Huskies in less than a year. Not only did Washing-ton produce three first-team and seven honorable mention All-Pac-12 players, but a combined five players earned first or second team Academic All-Pac-12recognition, including Danny Shelton who was named First-Team AcademicAll-American a first for Washington since 1991. Petersen, 50, the onlytwo-time winner of the Paul Bear Bryant Award (2006 and 2009), compiledan exceptional 92-12 record in his eight seasons as Boise State head coach(2006-2013), including two unbeaten seasons (13-0 in 2006 and 14-0 in 2009)and two BCS bowl berths. He won five conference titles and posted a 57-6record in conference play. Petersen, who also won the Bobby Dodd Coach ofthe Year Award in 2010, led the Broncos to 10 or more wins in seven of hiseight seasons and to 12 or more in four straight (2008-11). In 2006, Petersensfirst season in charge in Boise, he led the Broncos to their first undefeated

season since 1958, when the school was a junior college. The 2006 seasonwas capped by a 43-42 overtime win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, agame remembered by many as one of the greatest in bowl-game history. ThatBoise team ended the year ranked No. 5 in the final Associated Press top 25poll. The following season, the Broncos went 10-3 and finished out of thepolls for what would be the only time in Petersens first seven seasons. The2008 squad went 12-1 and ranked No. 11 in the final top 25, finishing theregular season undefeated. In 2009, Petersen led the Broncos to their secondundefeated campaign and another Fiesta Bowl berth. Boise State beat TCU,17-10, in Arizona, becoming the first team from a non-BCS conference everto win two BCS bowl games. The 09 Broncos checked in at No. 4 in the finalAP poll. The 2010 season ended with a 12-1 record, a No. 9 final rankingand a win in the Las Vegas Bowl, the first of three straight trips to Vegas forBoise State. In 2011, BSU once again went 12-1, finishing with a No. 8 final

ranking. Last season, Petersens team went 11-2 and beat Washington in theLas Vegas Bowl, good for a No. 18 final ranking. In 2013, Boise State, whichfaced Washington in the first game at the newly renovated Husky Stadium, finished the regular season with an 8-4 record (Petersen came to the UW priorto the Broncos bowl game). Throughout his teams unmatched on-field suc-cess, Petersen also saw his Broncos succeed in the classroom. In 2011, BoiseState was the only school to finish in the top 10 in both major polls and alsoreceive a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for finishing in the top 10percent of the Academic Progress Rate (APR), the second of three straightsuch awards for the program. Boise States APR was second in the nationin 2011 and 2012 and Petersen was recognized in 2012 for having the bestAPR for the two previous years among all FBS coaches. Known for his workwith quarterbacks, Petersen tutored Ryan Dinwiddie, Jared Zabransky andKellen Moore at Boise State. Moore set an NCAA record with 50 career wins

as a starting QB while winning three conference player of the year awards.Moore was the only player ever to record four 3,000-yard seasons in bothpassing and total offense. His 142 passing touchdowns were second-mostin NCAA history while his 14,667 career passing yards were fifth-most. Hetwice led the nation in passing efficiency and set an NCAA record for seasoninterception percentage, throwing just three in 431 attempts in 2009. Duringhis eight seasons seasons, 51 Broncos earned all-conference honors. Beforetaking over as head coach at Boise State, Petersen served as the Broncosoffensive coordinator from 2001-05. Petersen began his coaching career in1987 as freshman coach at his alma mater, UC Davis. In 1989, he became theAggies varsity wide receivers coach. In 1992, Petersen moved to Pittsburgh, where he was quarterbacks coach. In 1993, he moved back west to take over

a QBs coach at Portland State, helping the Vikings to Division II playoff berthsin each of his two seasons. In 1995, he took a job at Oregon as receivers coachunder Mike Bellotti, a position he held before moving to Boise as coordinatoin 2001. Born in Yuba City, Calif., on Oct. 13, 1964, Petersen graduated fromYuba City High in 1983 and went on to play QB at Sacramento City College

From there, he transferred to UC Davis, earning a degree in psychology in1988. He later earned a masters in educational psychology from Davis. At Davis, he set numerous school records, including the season mark for efficiencycompletions, percentage, TD passes and total offense as well as the careermark for completion percentage. He still remains in the top 10 in Aggies history in numerous season and career categories and his season and careecompletion percentage records still stand. In 1986, Petersen was named theNorthern California Athletic Conference Player of the Year and earned UCDavis Colby E. Slater Award as the schools Male Athlete of the Year. He wasalso a captain and won the teams Jerry Norris Award (Most Valuable andInspirational) and was inducted into the Cal Aggie Athletic Hall of Fame in1997. Petersen and his wife, Barbara, have two sons, Jack and Sam.

COaChING STaFF: With a new head coach on board last season, the Huskycoaching staff obviously included mostly new faces. However, all of themare back for year two (see next note for more on that). Of the nine full-timecoaches on the 2015 staff, six came to the UW from Boise State along withPetersen after 2013. Defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski was on Petersens staff in Boise in all eight seasons as head coach, including the last four ascoordinator. Kwiakowksi, a BSU Hall-of-Fame defensive lineman, also workedat his alma mater from 1988 to 1996. Associate head coach and offensive

line coach Chris Strausser spent 12 of the last 13 seasons prior to last yearcoaching in Boise (he coached at Colorado in 2006), meaning he was withPetersen seven of eight seasons. Running backs coach and recruiting coordi-nator Keith Bhonapha was also on Petersens Broncos staff during Petersenentire eight seasons, though he started as director of operations. He coachedrunning backs his last five years at BSU. Assistant head coach and lineback-ers coach Bob Gregory came to Washington having spent the previous fouseasons at Boise State. He was the defensive coordinator at California from2002 to 2009 and, along with also having coached at Boise State in 2001has also worked in the conference at Oregon. Former Oregon State quarter-back Jonathan Smith, who turned in several top-class performances vs. theHuskies during his playing days, was quarterbacks coach at Boise State foPetersens last two seasons. Previously an offensive coordinator at Montanahe continued in that role (along with QBs) at Washington. Defensive backs

coach Jimmy Lake, who spent the 2004 season in the same position at Washington under head coach Keith Gilbertson, was Petersens DBs coach in Boisethe last two years there, having spent five seasons in the NFL before thatWide receivers coach Brent Pease worked at BSU under Petersen for his firstsix seasons as head coach. The former standout quarterback at MontanaPease returned to the Northwest after having coached at Florida the previ-ous two seasons. Defensive line coach and special teams coordinator JefChoate has a similar recent history as he worked under Petersen from 2006through 2011 before going to Washington State in 2012 and Florida in 2013Among the nine full-time assistants, the only returner from prior to 2014 istight ends coach Jordan Paopao, who served in that same role in 2013 afterhaving worked as a UW grad assistant in 2011 and 2012, when he was also incharge of tight ends. Three of the UWs four graduate assistant coaches arenew in 2015, with Joshua Taufalele the only returner. Taufalale, a former New

Mexico lineman, helps with the o-line. New to the GA staff are former BoiseState receiver Kirby Moore, former Stanford defensive back Terrence Brownand former Kansas State linebacker Hansen Sekona.

T E A M N O T E SSTaFF CONTINUITY: Washingtons entire full-time coaching staff remainedin tact following the 2014 season, which was coach Chris Petersens first atthe UW. He, along with all nine full-time assistants, are back in 2015. Thatsactually rare in UW history as the coaching staffs have gone unchanged overtwo or more seasons only twice before (UW records for coaching staffs goback to the mid-1950s): 1989-90 and 2009-11.

HUSKIES vs. TROJaNS hISTORY:Washington and USC have played one another83 times since the series began in 1923. The Trojans hold a 51-28-4 series advantage,

Washington won its first-ever meeting against the Trojans, beating USC, 22-0, in

Seattle in 1923. When the series re-started in 1927, USC handed the Huskies six

straight defeats before Washington reeled off five in a row. The longest streak eitherway in the series began in 1965, when the Trojans beat Washington for the first

time of 10 straight wins. The UW and USC didn't play the last two seasons, due

to the Pac-12's divisions. In the most recent meeting, in 2012 at CenturyLink Fieldin Seattle, the Trojans won 24-14, thwarting several late chances for the Huskies

to make it close by forcing three fourth-quarter turnovers. A year prior in L.A., the

Trojans broke the UW's two-game win streak in the series with a convincing 40-17

victory. In 2010, Washington posted its second straight victory via late field goal asErik Folk connected from 32 yards to beat USC, 32-31, on the final play of the game.

In 2009 in Seattle, Washington handed No. 3 USC a 16-13 loss as Folk connectedon a 22-yard field goal with three seconds left to cap the game-winning drive.

DeFeNSe:Washington enters the week ranked atop the Pac-12 Conferencein rushing defense (104.5 yard per game), scoring defense (15.8 point pergame) and total defense (321.0 yards per game). Through four games, theHuskies have held their opponents to 10 or fewer points (total) in three of fourquarters, allowing just nine points in the first quarter, seven in the third and 10in the fourth. Opponents have scored touchdowns on just five of 14 attemptsfrom inside the red zone.

The PaC-12:Prior to the 2011 season, the Pac-10 Conference added Utahand Colorado to expand to the Pac-12. Washington, which along with Califor-nia is one of two schools who have been in the conference since its found-

ing in 1915, plays in the Pac-12 North, along with the other three Northwestschools (Oregon, OSU, WSU) and Stanford and California. Under currentplans, each school will play all five division rivals, plus four of six teams in theother division each season. The first two seasons, the Huskies did not faceUCLA or Arizona State. In 2013 and 14, the Huskies didnt face Utah or USC.This year, neither UCLA nor Colorado are on the UW schedule.

CaPTaINS:Washington elected six captains for the season, all seniors: TBDeontae Cooper, OLB Travis Feeney, QB Jeff Lindquist, WR Jaydon Mickens,OL Siosifa Tufunga, DL Taniela Tupou. The UW will also utilize one game cap-taion for each weeks contest. Heres a list of game-by-game captains:

Bois Stt:Cory Littleton Scrmnto Stt:Brian Clay Ut Stt:Joshua Perkins Cliforni:Kevin King

The 100-YaRD FaCTOR: Since the 1947 season, Washington is 195-62-3(.756) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. The Huskies were4-2 in such games last season and are 1-1 this season

hISTORY LeSSON: Successfully rushing the football and winning go handin-hand for the Huskies. Since 1990, UW has rushed for 200 yards in a game96 times. The Huskies record stands at 80-16-1 (.839) in those contests. Since

1995, UW is 55-13-1 (.804) when rushing for 200 yards.

hUSKY STaDIUM ReNOVaTION:Husky Stadium underwent a major renovation over from Nov., 2011, through Aug., 2013, as the entire lower bowl andsouth upper deck were demolished and replaced. The new facility features anew, state-of-the-art football operations center (weight room, training roomlocker room, meeting rooms, coaches offices) in the west end, much morepremium seating options and a new playing surface. Husky Stadium had fea-tured a track up until 2011, so seats that were once far from the field, particularly in the west end, are much closer to the action. UW is 13-5 at home sincethe re-opening of Husky Stadium.

aLaSKa aIRLINeS FIeLD aT hUSKY STaDIUM: The Oregon game onNov. 5, 2011, marked the final game in Husky Stadium prior to major renova

tions that have now been completed. The Huskies re-opened their home fieldwith a 38-6 win over then-No. 19 Boise State on Aug. 31, 2013.
