INTRODUCTIONWelcome to the fourth edition of the Husab News, designed especially for you our valuable colleagues.

The newsletter is designed with an aim to cut through confusion and serve as a ‘one-stop-shop’ for information related to the company and the industry at large.

We have officially hit the half year mark, congratulations to all of us for the hard work we have put in thus far, both in your work and in your personal lives. It can only

get better from here on out. There are a lot of exciting activities lined up, so be sure not to miss out by regularly checking all our communication platforms and when you have a minute, you are welcome to pop by the Admin & PR Office for more information.

On 06th of May 2019, President Hage Husab impresses Namibia at the 2019 Annual Mining Expo

Swakop Uranium took eager Namibians through all stages of the Uranium Cycle starting from Exploration, all the way down to Spent Fuel Disposal, and explained the process of generating Nuclear energy

from U308 covering key processes such as Conversion, Enrichment Fabrication and so on.

Many Namibians who attended the Mining Indaba were given a tour of the Husab operation using the now very popular 3D model of the Husab Mine, leaving audiences which included, the

Minister of Mines and Energy, Hon. Tom Alweendo, Chief Executive Officer of the Namibia Chamber of Mines, Mr. Veston Malango and other Key Industry players impressed and thankful for the valuable presentation.

at the 2019 Annual Mining Expo between the 8th -9th of May in Windhoek and had their hands full with many visitors to the Expo making sure - not to miss a chance to find out about one of the biggest producers of U308 of our time.

This year’s indaba was celebrated under the theme: “Celebrating 50 years of dedicated service and excellence to Namibian mining industry.”

Swakop Uranium received the award of Best stand in the Mining Companies category based on display and presentation. Congratulations to the Husab Family.

Employer of Choice

Many Namibians, young and old that flocked to the SU stand were impressed with the giant operation and its life span and indicated interest in being employed here.

What stood out most, was the significance placed on our workforce, the audience was impressed to learn that SU is the biggest employer in the Mining sector in Namibia and boast people from different background thus making us a very diverse group of employees.

HUSAB IMPRESSES FINLAND AMBASSADORH.E. Pirkko-Lissa Kyöstila, Ambassador of Finland to Namibia and Angola, accompanied by a 5-member delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Husab Mine and only had good things to say.

The Ambassador and her delegation were received by Mr. Cai Yusheg (CEO) as well as Mr. Angula Kalili (COO), who gave the esteemed visitors an overview of the Husab Mine operations.

This is not the first time, the Husab Mine receives a visit from the Finnish Embassy and it will certainly not be the last remarked the Ambassador.

The delegation had a 40-minute sit down with the CEO and COO where they engaged the Company on its Corporate Social Involvement and Contributions to the Namibian National Agenda.

The Ambassador in her closing remarks said that the Husab mine was very impressive because of the size, its global position etc. and signifies a strong bond of mutual understanding between the governments of China and Namibia.

The Delegation visited Zone 2 – Stage 1 & 2 Open Pit Mining area and also paid a visit to the Processing Plant Area and concluded they visit with lunch in the Welwitschia Meeting Room.

Mining

The ore Mining process at the Husab Mine starts with the drilling and blasting of hard rock within the pit areas. Drilling is done with 311 mm or 165 mm diameter holes, this is done using small and large drills respectively.

The geologists scan the drilled holes to identify ore bearing rocks, which are marked to indicate the areas with ore composite. After the ore bearing rocks are identified and marked, the holes are charged with explosives known as ANFO in order to fragment the hard rock into loose material that can be loaded.

The ore is loaded onto 320t trucks using Hydraulic and Rope shovels before it is hauled to the crusher. The crusher than reduces the loose rocks to fine material which is sent to the processing plant via a conveyor belt for further processing.

Why do we have an Acid Plant?

Sulphuric acid plays a crucial role in the extraction of uranium from the ore. The acid is added in the leach circuit where the concentration of the acid is carefully controlled to ensure efficient reagent usage. It is also used in the backend of the process, specifically during the concentration and purification of the U3O8 product.

At Swakop Uranium, sulphuric acid is produced by burning Sulphur powder and producing SO2 gas which is converted to SO3 gas in a 5 stage catalytic converter. The SO3 gas is then absorbed using existing sulphuric acid which is diluted with demineralised water to produce 98% sulphuric acid.

Due to difficulties in the construction of a railway line to SU, it was decided to produce acid onsite and truck in the Sulphur powder. Excess acid produced is sold to regional consumers.

The Smiling Diesel Mechanic – Hertha Namadhila Ruben

Hertha Namadhila Ruben is 28 years of age and is employed as a Diesel Mechanic in the Ancillary Workshop in the Mining Maintenance department on the Husab Mine. Growing up she spent most of her time around her dad and mimicked everything he did and that is pretty much how she ended up choosing a mainly “male-oriented” career.

She describes herself as, being a down to earth person and a ‘go-getter’. She was born and bred in Walvisbay where she lived with her parents. Hertha recalls growing up in a home that was always full of people, so much that one could be forgiven for thinking there was a birthday party or some sort of celebration going on. She reveals that,family and taking care of people in need means a lot in her family and these strong values have been passed down from one generation to the next.

Hertha attended primary and secondary school in Walvis Bay and later moved to Arandis to pursue a qualification as a Diesel Mechanic at NIMT. She joined the Company on the 16th of July 2018 and says with a smile, “Swakop Uranium is by far, the most interesting and exciting company she has worked for.”

Her favorite part of working on the Husab Mine is the exposure to gigantic equipment that is only found on the Husab Mine. “It is just never boring here, every day presents a new challenge and that is the thrill.

“I love working at Husab because I learn every day and I literally have

to keep up with technological advancements. Being a Diesel Mechanic is empowering and working with oil and grease brings out the child in me. In a nutshell, a Diesel Mechanic is responsible for regular maintenance of equipment and this includes servicing and fixing machinery should a breakdown occur.”

which are essential to keeping the e q u i p m e n t running smoothly and in good condition for operations.”

And the Signature smile “Well, they say “a smile is the best make you will ever wear” A smile is contagious so why not spread it? you never know whose day you might brighten up and also its good for your health.”

Environment

The future is female but it is widely believed that it is still a man’s world. What is it like being the only girl in the workshop most of the time?

“I consider myself to be lucky! Because the men I work with are simply the best. They always make sure that I am comfortable and they treat like one of them. I wouldn’t consider replacing them and I am proud to call them my colleagues. I believe in the philosophy of survival of the fittest, and I choose to survive”

Things I cannot go a day without

“Definitely smiling, listening to music or some motivational/wisdom podcasts and lastly having some “me” time with a cup of Green Tea, for some reason my day is never complete without having that cup of Tea.”

Your thoughts on Women Empowerment in the Company?

“As a woman I encourage all the women here and out there to go out and get what they want. Make your dreams come true and remember that it’s all in your hands. For me every obstacle I go through gives me that energy to persevere.”

On 06th of May 2019, President Hage Geingob declared the current drought affecting all regions of Namibia a National disaster. Namibia has, since the year 2013, experienced below normal rainfall of which the repercussions are exhausted grazing land and with little recovery.

Swakop Uranium, as an act of patriotism, has over the years supported the Drought Relief programs of the government and has this year again made a monetary donation of N$250,000.00 to be channeled towards the relief programs

in the various regions of Namibia.Mr. Cai Yusheng (CEO) and Angula Kalili (COO) handed over the cheque to Dr. Saara-Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, the Prime Minister of Namibia, who heartily received the donation and praised the Company for its contributions and commitments – stating that there has always been a great expectation for capacity building from Swakop Uranium, given its size, and said that it’s very encouraging to see that the Company is living up to the expectations of the people of Namibia.

Mr. Cai Yusheng, updated the Prime Minister on the latest developments on the Husab Mine, in terms of employment statistics, Corporate Social Responsibility, skills transfers initiatives and succession plans for various roles within the Company, and highlighted that the Company will continue to support initiatives aimed at the betterment of the people of Namibia.

Day breaks across the plains. The frosted dew drips onto the soil as the machinery starts to rumble. In the distance, one can hear the ominous groans of conveyor belts. The mines are alive this morning.

The beauty within these plains is its inhabitants. Let us inspect this open pit dust-lake as we delve deeper into this ecosystem.

One usually expects a certain amount of serenity this early in the day. But today is different. A pack of geologists, sifting through their agate carcass, are on high alert – licking each morsel as if it were their last. The winds felt different this morning. A gaggle of metallurgists waddle past them, as they make their way to the chemical moors. If you were to blink, you would miss the coming chaos.

A screeching cry!

The laborers take flight, the waddling metallurgists freeze in fear as the geologists scatter to hide behind a Mesozoic terrace. The great herds of the mining plains vanish as they trample through the newly stripped corridors to a false safety. The mining engineers were

coming. The pride of reckless engineers rush in, led by a titan of a man, hungry for tons. They crush and devour what’s left of the lake. Slurping up the rubble, regardless of grade. They spit their oils and leave behind only debris. They have no intention of constraint on this day…

Wait, what is that in the distance?

I can hear the hurried flap of majestic wings. Look, there it is again! It’s rushing through the clouds at an immense pace! Out of nowhere, and most unexpected, the unknown entity dives from its atmospheric position to crash into the earth below. The shockwave disables the engineers as they stumble in a disorientated awe.

The dust plume settles. Visibility clears. Here stands the Lesser Spotted Environmentalist!

Through concise movements – some would say otherworldly - he defeats the titan with logic and law. With order restored – the curious creatures of the mining plains return to their posts as if nothing had happened.

Business as usual.

The position of environmentalist is definitely not for the weak. You will be tested in all areas, beyond your scope. Your mental capacity will be stretched incrementally. Your emotional intelligence will be tested in a manner previously thought inhumane. Under constant disruptions and chaos, you will grow. As the unsung heroes, you will become hard, but more connected than ever before. Your intrinsic need for altruistic acts is what keeps you going. The intimate knowledge that our time on this planet has increased, by however many split seconds, as a side effect of our good deeds, is the smile we wear to bed each night. The notion of excellence and need to inspire drives us through the day to take on all that may come our way.

Tread lightly, for we are watching...
