There will be a flag raising, laying of a me-morial wreath and salute at 9 a.m. at the Mc-Cormick School Veteran’s Memorial, 325 Ohio St.
Then at 9:30 a.m. a ceremony is planned at the Scott Cemetery Veteran’s Memorial , 9200 block of Huron-Avery Road. There will be a flag raising, the laying of a memorial wreath

Ron James, speaker for this year’s service, re-cently completed a distinguished government career before moving to Huron. He served as the; Assistant Secretary of the Army (Man-power & Reserve Affairs), and Chief Human Capital Officer for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
An attorney and educator with an extensive background in regulatory human resources
and employment matters, he was a partner in the international law firm Squires Sanders and Dempsey in Cleveland and is now on the adjunct faculty at Cleveland State University Law School.
The observance will move back downtown to the Veteran’s Memorial in front of the Hu-ron City Building at 10:30 a.m. where James will deliver a short talk and Rev. Ray will offer a Memorial Day reflection. A tree will be ded-icated nearby in memory of longtime AM-VETS members and veterans’ activists Audrey and William “Mack” Mackiewicz.

Several people were taken to area hospitals after a car ran a stop sign and rammed an oncoming pickup in Huron Township. Huron Fire and Milan Fire helped in assisting in the accident.
A group of nearly two dozen boat enthusiasts, including Police Chief John Majoy, councilwom-an Phyllis Wassner and members of the Huron Coast Guard Auxiliary, participated Saturday morning in “Ready, Set, Inflate, an event spon-sored by the National Safe Boating Council. The annual check of the CO2 cartridges in inflatable vests is similar to the annual fall checking of the batteries in home smoke detectors. CG Auxilia-ries around the country hosted similar events at the same time, in hopes of setting a new world record.

The Huron Police Department will join local and national law enforce-ment officers and highway safety ad-vocates all across the country for the 2011 national Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement mobilization, May 23-June 5.
During the mobilization, officers will be cracking down on motorists who fail to wear their seat belts – both day and night.
Because nighttime passenger vehicle occupants are among those least likely to buckle up and most likely to die in crashes when unrestrained, nighttime enforcement has become a priority of the Click It or Ticket mobilization. Of those who died in nighttime crashes in 2009, nearly two-thirds (62 percent) were not wearing seat belts at the time of their fatal crashes.
In 2009, 11,593 passenger vehicle occupants died in motor vehicle crashes nationwide between the nighttime hours of 6 p.m. and 5:59 a.m., according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
“Many more nighttime traffic deaths can be prevented if more motorists simply start wearing their seat belts. That’s why the Huron Police Department is strongly sup-porting enhanced nighttime enforcement of seat belt laws during the May 23 – June 5, 2011, Click It or Ticket cam-paign,” said Sergeant Sean Ryan. “We will be out in force to remind drivers and occupants to always wear their seat belts – both day and night.”
High-visibility enforcement such as the Click It or Ticket mobilization is credited with increasing the national belt usage rate from 58 percent in 1994 to an observed usage rate of 85 percent in 2010. Belt use saves thousands of lives each year across America. In 2009 alone, seat belts saved 12,713 lives nationwide.
“Law enforcement will be cracking down on Click It or Ticket violators around the clock. Local motorists should be prepared to buckle up.
If law enforcement finds you on the road unbuckled any-time or anywhere, you can expect to get a ticket — not a warning. No excuses and no exceptions,” said Sergeant Ryan.
Remember this May 23 to June 5: It’s Click It or Ticket. Buckle up and encourage your loved ones to do the same. You’ll save the cost of a ticket and may even save a life.

Harbor North, a locally-owned full-service marina and sailing center, is hosting its Discover Sailing Weekend June 4-5 to promote an affordable and family-based recreation-al boating lifestyle. This year’s event helps benefit the Erie County chapter of United Way in addition to promoting Lake Erie as a family boating and tourism destination.
One-hour introductory sail rides on Lake Erie are of-fered to the public both days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on a first-come, first-serve basis by members and staff of Har-bor North, 400 Huron Street.
Participants who register to enjoy a sailboat ride are each requested to provide a $10 cash donation in support of the fundraising effort to support the local United Way chapter.
Free refreshments and other activities are offered at Har-bor North both event days.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Watercraft reports there were a record 424,700 registered watercraft in the state in 2010. Among this total were 10,104 sailing craft, or 2.3 percent of all registered Ohio watercraft.
Additional event information, plus information on events, programs, marine products and services offered at Harbor North is available online at www.harbornorth.com and by calling 419-433-6010.

For the past two years, the members of Huron Girl Scout Junior Troop 213 have been working toward their Bronze Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Junior can earn. The Bronze Award requires each girl to learn the leader-ship and planning skills necessary to follow through on a project that makes a positive impact on her community. Working towards this award demonstrates her commit-ment to helping others, improving her community and the world, and becoming the best she can be. The girls of Troop 213 chose to help the Erie County Humane Society to fulfill the requirements for the Bronze Award.
The girls’ commitment to the Humane Society has been evident. Most recently, each girl has volunteered approxi-mately 15 hours of their time to helping at the Humane Society. This has required each girl to spend time playing with the cats and dogs at the Humane Society. In addi-tion, the troop held a pet food/supply drive at Woodlands
School. The most physically demanding project that the girls undertook was to spruce up the landscaping in front of the Humane Society. The girls solicited donations from local business to complete their landscaping project. The troop is tremendously thankful to Barnes Nursery for pro-viding mulch, Colonial Gardens for providing flats of an-nuals, The Garden Port for providing a lovely azalea bush, and Manager Phil at Menard’s for providing Preen. The girls spent several hours on Saturday, May 21, weeding, planting, and spreading mulch. The results were striking.
The troop will be finishing their project soon and will be bridging to become Girl Scout Cadettes. Troop 213 is led by Candy Mullins and Jodi Perez and includes fifth-grade students: Gretchen Blackwell, Sarah Blevins, Madison Carmel, Colleen Dodrill, Lea Fox, Josie Franks, Julia Hip-pely, Isabela Liu, Makenzie Mullins, Brooke Ritzler, and Breanna Smith. Congratulations to all of these girls and their troop leaders on their accomplishments.

The Twenty-Fourth Annual McCormick Junior High School Academic Dinner was held on Thursday, May 19. The purpose of the annual dinner is to recognize those students who have succeeded academically. To be invited to the dinner, a student must have been on the honor roll for three quarters. Inclusion on the honor roll requires that a student have a 3.5 GPA with no grade lower than a B. This year, there were 93 seventh- and eighth-grade students who achieved this goal and were invited to the academic dinner.
The evening began with a few words from McCormick principal, Mr. Chad Carter. Those in attendance were then treated to a vocal solo by Allison Brownell, a flute solo by Alison Litz, and a clarinet ensemble performance featur-ing Ashtyn Stadler, Renata Kurtz, Olivia Iannantuono, and Maggie Nelson. The performances were followed by a dinner prepared for the students and their parents. Af-ter dinner, each student was individually recognized and presented with a certificate from the President’s Education
Awards Program. The evening concluded with an invited presentation by Mrs. Anne Hinton. Mrs. Hinton, retired director of the Huron Public Library, attended her final three years of high school in Huron and raised her daugh-ters here. She spoke to the students about reaching beyond their comfort zone to try new things and, most important-ly, about kindness. After having a somewhat difficult time in school and experiencing bullying as a youth, she chal-lenged the students to be kind to everyone and said, “Don’t dismiss the late bloomers- you never know who they will become.” Further, Mrs. Hinton tearfully stated, “Kindness costs you nothing. It enriches those you touch.”
The students who were honored at this year’s academic dinner were: Colleen Allen, Jillian Balde, Karl Bates IV, Brooke Bauer, John Baus, Abigail Black, Delaney Black, Hannah Blackwell, Jep Bloor, Jamie Borger, Alexis Brady, Allison Brownell, Leo Bunting, Megan Cammalleri, Austin Campbell, Hannah Cantrill, Jessica Carroll, Sarah Carroll, Breanna Chaffin, Kaelin Cockrell, Megan Decker, Michael Delahunt, Dean Dickirson, Victoria Fantozzi, James Faun-
da, Deena Fenske, Grant Ferrell, Benjamin Fries, Jacob Fries, Bailey Gadd, Monika Giardina, Lisa Gies, Paige Gra-ham, Kylie Greulich, Kiersten Hammond, Danzell Harris, Samantha Hebert, Michael Huffman, Shannon Hughes, Katherine Humphreys, Olivia Iannantuono, Samuel James, Camille Karren, Alisia Kelley, Thomas King, Kyle Kovach, Kaityln Krueger, Renata Kurtz, Nicholas Lachowyn, Em-ily Lance, Kaitlin Lance, Zoey Lehrer, Alexandria Lenyo, Alison Litz, Sean Martin, Graham Mast, Hannah Miller, Madison Mize, Chase Mosijowsky, Hollie Mueller, Cody Myers, Wyatt Myers, Eric Myles, Margaret Nelson, Gabri-elle Norcross, Kelsey Ohm, Madison Orzech, Jennifer Paiz, Bo Pettegrew, Franchesca Reiber, Christina Rivera, Tyler Sasala, Brodie Sennish, Samuel Sluga, Nicholas Smercina, Gloria Souter, Ashtyn Stadler, Emma Steinmetz, Caleb Stidham, Erin Stoner, Adam Storer, Rylee Stradtman, An-thony Studans, Julia Studer, Anna Tanaka, Theresa Tomc-zyk, Logan Weber, Eric Weir, Morgan Welborn, Jacob Wise, Audra Wisehart, Jenna Witter, and Blake Wysocki. Con-gratulations to these students on their achievement.

The students and staff of Firelands Montessori Academy dedicated a Peace Pole on Friday, May 13, 2011. Creation of the pole was year-long effort and each member of our faculty and each child contributed to its beauty. The Peace Pole says: “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in English, Korean, German and Spanish (some of the languages spoken by families of FMA).
A Peace Pole is a handcrafted monument that displays this important message on each of its sides. There are tens of thousands of Peace Poles in 180 countries all over the world. They serve as a constant reminder to visualize and promote world peace.
