TYRE DISPOSAL. Tyres are still being left on site at race meetings, Although less each month, which is appreciated by the Club as this reduces costs for disposal. The club asks that this continues which will delay any decision on passing on disposal costs to the Competitors. Please take the tyres with you or pay a £3 fee per set of tyres to any of the kart traders or the maintenance team who will be able to dispose of them. Over the SEPTEMBER weekend HKRC Officials will be walking around the paddock checking on tyre disposal.

• DOGS are not permitted to be walked around the paddock during practice or race day. ALL DOGS must be kept with the pitbay area of the owner. When walking your dogs PLEASE ensure you clear any dog fouling. there were indications this was not being cleared. IF this continues WALKING DOGS on the site will NOT be permitted. Thankyou for your cooperation. Dogs must be kept with the pit space allocated during practice and race day (SR 25)

Kimbolton Circuit 2 was once again in use as Hunts Kart Racing Club hosted the 6th round of their 2010 Championships at the home of the East Anglian Trophy meeting. Immediately after the race weekend work started on Phase One of the 2010 Development Plan, refurbishing the gents’ toilets and installing wash and shower facilities. This work is expected to be fully completed by October.Cadet Libre and Honda Cadet: Connor Hall and Lewis Taylor seemed to be running away with the Libre final with Taylor latched onto Hall’s rear bumper, but it all went wrong for them on lap eight when they clashed and they dropped back to seventh and ninth. This promoted Ellis Hanks into the lead with William Bennett and Jake Blackledge following closely. Bennett and Blackledge got involves in an intense battle for runner up spot, allowing Hanks to gain a clear advantage. At the line it was Blackledge who followed Hanks home, just ahead of Bennett. Lawrence Wilson won the Novice trophy. In Honda Aaron Drury seemed to be running away with things with Harrison Huggan stuck behind Ethan Andrews. Huggan took a couple of laps to dispose of Andrews and then made huge strides into the gap set up by Drury. Running nose to tail on the last few laps, Drury just hung on for the class win.Junior TKM: Stephen Letts had this race in the bag from the start. Already a second clear, his progress to the flag was helped by the battle for second, third and fourth raging behind him. Richard Woolmer, Adam Strong and Bradley Peck were the men involved and with Peck getting the better of Woolmer on lap eight. Woolmer struck back the following lap taking Strong with him. Strong then had to fend off Peck allowing Woolmer to get away. Oliver Graham won the Novice trophy.Mini Max: Luke Hughes had James Webb pressing him from the off, soon to be joined by Ben Matthews. These three circulated nose to tail until Oliver Skingley came to join the party. Skingley put some life into proceedings mixing it up with Matthews, but each time he got past, Matthews would fight back. Eventually Skingley made the place his own, and then went into second, taking Matthews with him and demoting Webb to fourth. Skingley and Matthews spent the rest of the race swapping places with Skingley coming out on top in the end. Junior Rotax: Charlie Streather led from pole and seemed to have gained a significant advantage that would be hard for anyone to overcome. Liam Ferguson got took a while to get up to speed, but once in the groove was clearly quicker than Streather and it was only a matter of time until the inevitable happened. On lap thirteen Ferguson took the lead and never looked back. Streather was second well ahead of Josh Collings who ran a lonely race in third. He in turn well clear of fourth placed Bobby Neil. Luke Cox won the Novice trophy.Rotax 177: Matt Barnes had a great start up from grid six to lead the opening laps, but Milan Mach swept through from third to first in one move on lap four. James Darch was able to follow Mach to push Barnes back to third. After this all eyes were on the hard charging Lee Torrie who had not had the best of results in the heats and started on the back row. By lap six, he was up to third and chasing down Darch. When Darch was caught out at Easton, he immediately retook second from Torrie at the Bus Stop. Next time round, Torrie was prepared and, repeating his pass at Easton, blocked the riposte through the Bus Stop to claim second for his own. In a valiant pursuit of Mach, Torrie ran out of time and Mach secured the win by a kart length.Rotax 177 Masters: Ian Alexander made a good start to lead from Steve Sawford and Martin Reader, these three pulling away from the rest. Despite constant pressure, Alexander maintained hi s slender lead. Sawford kept the pressure up but wasn’t able to make a clean strike for the lead as his attentions were diverted by Reader. On

the last lap but one, Sawford made a determined move and when Alexander rebuffed this, Reader seized his opportunity to move up to second.210 Challenge: O Plate Lee Plain was master of all he surveyed with a lights to flag win in which he set up a seven second lead. Mike Coombs took up the pursuit, but faded as the race progressed, eventually being lapped by the winner. Tom Whyte, held second for a number of laps, but fell behind Matt Cardwell, Dan Bury and Chris Callaghan by the end.Gearbox 125 and 250: In 125, Anthony Abbasse, visiting works driver for the Sodikart team, had only managed to finish one heat out of the three, but after fitting a borrowed motor and with a resultant back row start, he was soon in the hunt for victory in the 21 lap final. Poleman Richard Palmer, also on a Sodi did his best to delay the hard charging Abbasse, but the French vice champion’s speed down Yamitsu Straight was immense and the inevitable pass was made on lap 17. This time Abbasse’s engine made it to the line, with Palmer second ahead of Tom Witts. Nicholas Hope took the novice award. Martin Smith and Ron Stamp looked set to battle it out for the 250 class win, but Stamp dropped out at half distance leaving Smith an easy win. Chris Purdie was second, one lap down and the only other 250 to complete the distance!Senior Rotax: Andrew Winter led from start to finish in a fairly uneventful race as far as podium positions were concerned. Aaron Charles was second throughout, seven seconds behind. Henry Easthope passed Harry Arnold and Alex Rowley on his way to third. The three novices provided the interest with a close race. Thomas Lamb got the break on Luke Andrews and Peter Marriott at half distance to win the novice trophy.

Kimbolton Station 117by Rodger A. Freeman

This Airfield, built by W. & C. French Ltd., was another in the batch laid down for RAF bombers in 1941 and had a main runway of only 1,340 yards before its extension to the 2,00 yards of a Class A requirement. Hard-standings were increased from thirty to fifty for the USAAF and additional living sites built, the majority of the personnel accommodation being to the south of the airfield close to the adjacent town of Kimbolton.

The first American unit to occupy the field was the 91st Bomb Group which arrived fresh from the States in September 1942, although it moved to Bassingbourn after only a month ostensibly because the runways at Kimbolton were not strong or long enough for the safe operation of Fortresses. In fact, the group changed places with the 17th Bomb Group, a B-26 organisation which was without its air echelon and was en-route to Africa. The 17th’s personnel also only stayed for a month during which time, and thereafter, extensions were made to the NW-SE runway to facilitate the operation of fully-loaded B-17s.

Kimbolton then became the home of the most successful of all the Eighth Air Force heavy bomber groups – the 379th. The early leadership of Colonel

Maurice Preston (November 26, 1942 to October 10, 1944) gave the 379th group premier position as far as bomb tonnage dropped – 26,459 tons – more than any other unit including those operational before the 379th arrived in the UK. It also exceeded all other UK Bomb Groups in the total number of missions flown, carrying out 330 between May 1943 and May 1945. One B-17G Ole Gappy itself completed 157 missions; probably more than any other Eighth Air Force bomber.

Hangar accommodation at Kimbolton was provided by the standard two T2s dispersed on the western and southern sides of the airfield. Some of the airfield buildings were close to the approach to the N-S runway and in bad vis ability on January 23, 1945, a B-17 taking off for a mission crashed into a living site killing and injuring several men.

On March 6, 1944, the day of the costly Berlin raid, Lieutenant General James H. Doolittle, the Eighth Air Force commander, had gone to the airfield and was waiting on the control tower with members of his staff for the bombers of the 379th to return. One Fortress, Dragon Lady, was seen to approach with one dead engine, firing red emergency flares. With four wounded crew members aboard, the pilot, Fred Sommer, attempted to put the Fortress on the runway but too close behind another B-17 just touching down. Dragon Lady hit the slipstream and, thrown out of control, careered straight for the

control tower. Only by giving the Fortress full throttle was Sommer able to clear the tower, and General Doolittle, by a few feet.

Kimbolton saw post-war service with the RAF until it was sold during the years 1960-64, part to former owners, the Duke of Manchester, and the remainder by public auction. Although some agriculture then took place at Kimbolton, when we visited the airfield, the runways were being smashed up and removed (although the control tower was still standing) in readyness for its conversion to the Stow Longa Trading Estate. A second, old-style control tower also remains a short distance to the south of the standard one. Parts of the runways are used for go-kart racing.

Kimbolton hit the headlines in November 1971 when an abortive attempt was made by a Syrian pilot, Rafiq Kalos El Jassen Ashour, to land four Indians and one Pakistani on the airfield from a Piper Cherokee. On November 28, 1971, the local farmer, Mr. Raymond Convine, saw the aircraft standing on the airstrip. When he got close, he could see the pilot was masked whereupon he rammed the plane with his pick-up truck. When Ashour tried to escape, Mr. Convine went after him armed with a spanner, the masked pilot stopping several times during the chase to offer the farmer a £1,00 bribe to forget the incident! When Ashour escaped with two men who had been waiting for the aircraft, Mr.

Convine returned to the five illegal immigrants who were taken into custody.

A Terence Back was subsequently brought to trail in March 1973 and found guilty. At the time of trial he was already serving an 18-month prison sentence in Glasgow to which the Northampton Crown Court added three years for conspiring with others to evade the control of Commonwealth immigrants and two years for making arrangements to facilitate the entry of illegal immigrants into the UK. His brother Raymond, believed by the police to be the ringleader, had previously died in Paris August 1972. Ashour escaped and was not brought to trail.

The incident sparked off an intensive check on all the disused wartime airfields in the East Anglia area and farmers and airfield owners were warned to be on the look out for aircraft landing in suspicious circumstances. Measures to combat the landing of illegal immigrants by plane still continue today and we were stopped by police during our visit to Framlingham airfield. The Directorate of Military Survey has also restricted the loan of wartime airfield maps.
