SEPTEMBER

2015 Welcome Berea!

Living out the great ends of the Church: proclaiming the gospel for the salva-

tion of humankind; sheltering, nurturing and providing spiritual fellowship;

maintaining divine worship; preserving the truth; promoting social righteous-

ness; exhibiting the Kingdom of Heaven to the World;

Believing that good stewardship of the buildings entrusted to us includes

making them available for emerging communities of faith to worship God;

Keeping the biblical mandate to love our neighbor;

Seeking to further expand the multicultural mission which Hunting Ridge

Presbyterian Church established over 16 years ago;

Hunting Ridge Presbyterian Church and the Berea Centro de Oracion y Estudio

Biblico, La Iglesia de Dios, Inc. commit to shared ministry:

These are the words at the beginning of our shared ministry agreement with Berea Centro de

Oracion y Estudio Biblico, La Iglesia de Dios. What a gift it is to a small, developing, immigrant

congregation to have a stable place to worship! What good stewardship of your well built, acces-

sible, beautiful sanctuary! Pastor Loida Pagán (Pah-gahn) and her congregation are so, so excited

guage. So if you drive by and see the lights on, stop in and say hello. They will be entering

lowship and service together. Hunting Ridge, you continue to open your doors to the commu-

nity. I am grateful, the community sees the love of Christ in you, and surely God is pleased!

2015 HRPC Outdoor Worship

More than 85 people joined us for worship outdoors

on a beautiful summer day on August 9. We gath-

ered under the trees near the office entrance and

kept needing to add more chairs! What a gift to

watch the dramatic talents of several church mem-

bers—thank you to playwright Queenline Mbenga

and to actors Eva Hendrix Shovliin, Amy Oh, Chris

Myles, Joan Higbee, Queenline Mbenga, Emmanuel

Addo and Craig Sparks! A typical HRPC picnic

spread of food provided more than we could

eat! We shared food with several passers by who

were setting up house after recently leaving the Help-

ing Up Mission. We gave them something to put in

their empty refrigerator.

Let’s make this a summer tradition!

September is busy for HRPC!

On September 17 James Parks will be installed as the moderator of Baltimore Presbytery! Join

other HRPC members to support James AND to hear the moderator of the PC(USA), RE Heath

Rada, preach during the 10 am worship service. If you want to stay for lunch, be sure to reserve

lunch on line at the Presbytery website ($10) or pack your own. Mr. Rada will also speak after

lunch (12:45-1:45 pm). Meeting is at Central Presbyterian Church on York Road in Tow-

son. Let’s fill up a pew with HRPC folks! Carpool if you can.

On September 13 our worship service will be the location for a neighboring church’s Pastor

Nominating Committee to hear a sermon from a candidate they are considering for their pas-

tor. It is a service we can provide for a sister church!

ALSO: come to see and hear a report from Eva Hendrix-Shovlin on her learning experiences in

Peru earlier this year.

as well) on Saturday, September 19 from 11 am-2 pm for a trip to the NEGRO BASEBALL

trip is free! Let’s plan to carpool. The city is providing a school bus to transport children

and adults from the Harlem Ave. neighborhood (where we had Bible Camp this sum-

mer). We can all meet at the library.

FAITH PLACE Starts September 13

Note: On the 1st Sunday of

each month, only the pre-

Kindergarten children have

class; the Kindergarten and

older children remain in the

sanctuary to participate in the

communion service.

PARENTS: We appreciate

your efforts to bring the chil-

dren every Sunday so that

they do not miss important

components of the learning and

fellowship experience that occurs

each week. They also participate

in learning scripture and music

that they share in the morning

worship service from time to

time.

CONGREGATION: We still

need help with teachers and help-

ers (who do not teach but stay in

the classes with the children and

assist the teachers as needed).

Please call, text, or e-mail

(number below) to volunteer.

Thanks again for being part of this

wonderful program for our chil-

dren!

We are looking forward to the

new church school year which

will start on September 13th and

we’re excited about our new

curriculum, Growing in Grace

and Gratitude! Our three

classes will all learn the same

Scripture lesson each week,

taught at their grade level.

Our schedule is as follows:

Children ages 3 through 5th

grade go to the 11:00 worship

service in the sanctuary. After

the “Time for Young Disciples”

with Pastor Deborah, they go to

their classes in the educational

building. We have pre-

Kindergarten for those who

have not yet attended Kinder-

garten. And we have a K-2nd

grade and a 3rd through 5th grade

class.

have already been enriched by their musical and

dramatic gifts. Take a moment to introduce your-

self to our newest members and help them get to

This six session Nutrition for

Health class will cover the basics

of healthy nutrition for optimal

health. Come learn about the

fundamentals of nutrition, even if

you think you are eating a

healthy diet right now. New

findings in the science of nutri-

tion have made a greater impact

on overall health.

Learn about biochemical indi-

viduality – that there’s no one

right diet that works for every-

one all of the time. Discover the

untruths of conventional “health

foods.” Examine the dieting

myths; nutrition facts labels; the

U.S. Department of Agriculture

(USDA) dietary recommenda-

tions.

Classes will be held in the

HRPC Fellowship Hall on Mon-

day evenings starting in Octo-

ber.

your whole family using nutrition-

ally sound principles which will

increase your optimal health.

Learn how nutrition can help

prevent heart disease, prevent

and even reverse diabetes, re-

duce the possibility of cancer,

heal the gut and turn around the

global obesity epidemic.

Did you know that the average

American eats four times the

amount of refined grains than are

recommended by the USDA?

About 14% of food budgets are

spent on sugar and candy. An-

other 8% is spent on frozen

meals. And less than 5% is spent

on fresh fruit and vegetables

which makes us a poorly nour-

ished nation.

Spiritual Mentor Program

HRPC Spiritual mentor program begins this month. Between 9-11 middle and high school youth will

work with a spiritual mentor (an adult member of Hunting Ridge)… getting to know one another

across the generations….studying and discussion the letter to the Philippians….sharing joys and

struggles of following Christ. What a gift this is to our young people! (And, I believe the adult men-

tors will find it a gift as well.) Please keep the Spiritual mentors/youth in your prayers as they begin

new connections in our church family.

New members Queenline Bihisi, Lovette Mbenga, and Kelly Mbenga were examined and

welcomed by the Session at the August stated meeting.

The Continuing Education topic for August was “Becoming Transformational Leaders.”

RE Johnnie Summers reported on her experiences at the “Big Tent” gathering.

The Session approved a Shared Ministry Covenant with the Berea Center.

HRPC’s commitment with the Baltimore Falam Baptist Church was reconfirmed.

Closer to completion everyday!

In Granite Falls, Minnesota I got to spend three days as a

counselor for the younger children of the Upper Sioux

Community. I experienced pre-schoolers to second graders

enjoy learning about science, robotics, and reading. After

the camp, the local Presbyterian minister, Pastor Fern,

taught us about Native American history and it was a real

eye opener. Knowing the history makes me want to go back

to the camp even more next year. Also so I can see all of

the people I met and the younger kids I connected with.
