CAFE & GROCER

GOODNESS ME ORGANICS

Goodness Me OrganicsGoodness Me Organics is an organic café and grocer in Newcastle all under one roof in a central location on the Cnrs Glebe Road and Dale Street in Adamstown in Newcastle.

It is the dream made reality by owners Anna and Andy who have put their years of healthy eating and extensive knowledge together to create a spacious and welcoming shop and café, filled with wholesome goodies including fresh produce, dairy, meat, eggs, bread and

pantry goods as well as household items. The café space spills out in to the garden courtyard and the yummy, additive free food is all made on the premises.

The Hunter iMag team visited on the open day (and many times since then) and were pleased to see the place simply buzzing with excitement. Locals are chuffed to bits that they have such a wonderful facility on their doorstep in Newcastle but it doesn’t end there, good food lovers (like us!) come from all over to buy the best produce for their families or simply to relax and unwind in the café.

For more information see the website www.goodnessmeorganics.com.au, find

them on Facebook or just drop in – the friendly team are always ready to help!

Trading Hours - Café: Mon to Fri 8.30am to 4pm, Sat 9am to 3 pm. Grocer: Mon to Fri 8.30am to 5.30pm, Sat 9am to 3pm

Garlic Farmers have had a bumper crop in AustraliaAustralian garlic has been in

abundance since Christmas and the prices are very good! For those of us who have had to endure the cheaper, poorer quality imported garlic for the last decade or, the good news is that there has been a lot of good, Australian garlic in the shops. It may have taken a few years, but

farmers in Australia have figured out how to grow good size and quality garlic at an affordable price. Fruit and Veg shops were selling it between $15 to $40 per kg.While this is not organically grown, it is still good quality and great eating, and it is without the fumigation that imported stock must go through. The best has come out of Tasmania, which is big, purple coloured and flowing with juices. It was the most

expensive and only came onto the market in February to April, but look out for it next year. Most purple garlic is out of season now, but our Grande variety is still available in selected Sydney stores and this will stay fresh right up til September. It’s perfect for roasting and eating whole with your roast lambs, etc.For more info or recipes visit: www.huntervalleygarlic.com.au

James Estate Wine review2012 Vitai (Semilon)Grown in the Upper Hunter Valley, this bronze award winning wine is best served chilled. It is beautifully pale in the glass, a light wine that is fresh, zesty and medium bodied with just a hint of spritz.

It was the perfect accompaniment to our Thai food (as recommended by the girls at the Cellar Door) – easy to drink and beautifully balanced. Definitely a new firm favourite! The price is good too at $16.00 it’s the perfect indulgence.

Petit Verdot 2010A full bodied red wine that has matured for 9 months. Rich ruby red colour a full intense

flavours, this is a grown up wine.

We tried it with an afternoon BBQ and it was ideally suited to the smoky meats. Priced at $16.00, it is a great red for sharing with friends or just be selfish and treat yourself! We loved it.

Newcastle is a vibrant cosmopolitan city which has everything from world-class surfing beaches, to the emerging food scene, Newcastle has it all. Explore and uncover the flavour

and allure of the city’s streetscapes and waterfronts – each with its own feel and character.

The Café culture is emerging with the most popular food areas in Darby Street in Cooks Hill; The Harbour waterfronts including Honeysuckle, Beaumont Street in Hamilton and The Junction.

Newcastle is a city that embraces and nurtures creativity, and holds local arts practitioners in high esteem. Newcastle is host to a colourful and expansive array of art galleries, including the Newcastle Region Art Gallery, one of Australia’s leading regional galleries. Much creative talent has originated in the city including the world-renowned band, Silverchair.

Newcastle BeachesNewcastle is well-known for its stunning coastline and it is one of the few cities in the world that can say it has eight beaches within five minutes of its city centre. Nobbys, Newcastle, Bar, Dixon Park and Merewether Beach, just to name a few, are attractive must-see locations for any visitor to the city.

June 2007 storms thrust Nobbys Beach into the International spotlight after the grounding of the massive Pasha Bulker cargo ship on its shores. A monument to the event stands at Nobbys Beach and is a stop off point for visitors and locals alike. Nearby is the Harbour break-wall and Nobby’s Lighthouse, perfect for that afternoon stroll and the ideal vantage point to watch 300m cargo ships come into port.

Newcastle Beach is known for being one of the best surf locations in

Australia along with Merewether Beach, home to the annual International Surfest competition. Adjacent are the Merewether Baths, the largest ocean bath complex in the Southern Hemisphere – there is nothing else like this facility in Australia. The bath is a favourite for locals of a warm summer’s day and ideal for lap swimmers all year round.

One of the city’s most outstanding historic landmarks is the Newcastle Ocean Baths. With its art deco architecture and picturesque views of the ocean, the bath has long been an icon of the Newcastle coastline. Adjacent to the ocean bath is Newcastle Canoe Pool, which once featured a map of the world with small islands representing the continents. The shallow canoe pool is the perfect place for young children to swim in safety away from waves and surfers.

A visit to Newcastle is not complete without a day on the beach. So grab a parcel of fish and chips and join the locals on the sand. Don’t forget to watch out for dolphins, a common sight off Newcastle’s beaches.

Soaking up the rays beside the water is one of winter’s greatest pleasures in Lake Macquarie. It may be a touch too cold for swimming, but you don’t always have to be in the water to enjoy it. Make the most of the beautiful coastal environment from onshore or onboard your vessel of choice. Some warming winter water activities include:

KayakingGet up close and personal with the lake – kayaking is a great way to experience the tranquil, flat waters and diverse range of shorelines. For some great kayaking adventure ideas, download the new Walking and Kayaking Trails Mobile App

from Lake Macquarie Tourism. You can choose from 5 scenic kayaking trails; take in peaceful Dora Creek or paddle past the largest island in Lake Macquarie. Just visit www.lakemactrails.com in your mobile browser from more.

CruisingA great option for groups! Get a bunch of friends together and relax onboard your own private boat. Visit the sand islands or venture onshore at Toronto, Warners Bay or Belmont for lunch. For true relaxation, charter a luxurious catamaran or yacht, or for a self-drive adventure, a range of smaller craft including a pontoon boat and tinnies are available for hire. Many do not require a boat license. For more information, visit www.visitlakemac.com.au/what-to-see-and-do/water-activities.

Whale WatchingAvoid the crowds of well-known whale watching destinations further north and try your luck in Lake Macquarie! Whale watching cruises operate during the cooler months of the year. On land, the Caves Beach Coastal Walk traverses along the cliff tops with stunning ocean views for most of its length. – perfect for spotting those elusive whales! For more information, see www.visitlakemac.com.au/what-to-see-and-do/walking-trails/caves-beach-walk. Another location to try is the Munmorah State Conservation Area. This park features pristine beaches, campgrounds and walking trails with spectacular ocean views.

Wollombi Valley www.hunterimag.com.au

Wollombi Markets

Wollombi Valley is nestled between the Watagan Forests and Yengo National Park, just an hour and a half from Sydney at the gateway to the Hunter Valley. Wollombi has a rich

convict history, reflected in the many original sandstone buildings and cottages peppered throughout the area. The Endeavour Museum is a great place to explore local history, located opposite the famous Wollombi Tavern – home of Dr Jurds Jungle Juice.

Wollombi is a photographer’s dream with a unique flavour all its own, offering experiences to suit everyone. Here you can enjoy a picnic lunch, a fine dining restaurant or the immensely popular local cafes and shops, everything from a nursery and an antique store to a world class wool store and several quirky gift shops. Accommodation ranges from farm stays and self contained guesthouses to gorgeous boutique B&Bs set amongst the bush.

The Wollombi Valley Wine Trail offers a diverse range of locally produced wines and a friendly welcome to all. Wollombi is also home to Australia’s largest private sculpture park, Defiance

Gallery on a former lavender farm. All are bordered by National Parks with great bushwalking trails, lookouts and aboriginal rock carvings. For more information visit the menu of the following websites: www.wollombi.com.au www.convicttrail.org

Wollombi is a wonderful place to lose yourself for a day, a weekend or longer.

What to See & Do■ Come wine tasting in the Wollombi Valley region - famous for its Semillon, Shiraz and Chardonnay wines.

■ Explore the history of Wollombi by following the town’s walking trail with many pre-1860s buildings including the Endeavour Museum.

■ See the Wollombi Valley Artists exhibitions at the Wollombi Cultural Centre or for theatrical productions at Laguna Hall.

Little Red Ridinghood Nursery and Gift shopA Small business with a Big Vision.

As a sole parent Lola sees it as her role to ease the kids into the workforce.

All three are involved in the business to some extent;  Finn, 13 yo, the youngest, grows and propagates plants. He learned to take responsibility for everything that involves his little business - from getting the timing of planting right, to watering before 7 am and after 5 pm (before and after school), hiring people to look after his plants when he is away, pruning, recognising and treating diseases and pests, out late at night to cover up plants for frost and so on.

Ziggy, nearly 17, runs the shop a couple of times a week when Lola needs to replenish the stock.

And Tavi, 25yo, is an enormous help in planning, plant care, facebook-page, general creative ideas, picking up stock and running the shop whilst also supplying the shop with her great handmade jewellery, baby shoes and clothes.

Little Red has shot the Wolf of un-employment , dullness, boredom and lack of motivation and so created a Great Small Family Business that sets young people up to "Get a Grip", be creative and have a healthy work-ethic.  Not just a nursery - but a place to come to, to see and experience!

Valley View, Cessnock

Cessnock & Kurri KurriCessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast.

Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland.

During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the

last twenty years.

Consequently many areas have undergone a change in character, with rural residential housing development and weekend retreats becoming popular.

The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries.

The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.

To Have And To Hold10 March - 27 July Lt Governor’s Residence (Maitland Gaol)Weddings are a time of hope for the future.  Preparations are exciting, often fraught with mishaps and downright disasters and today, often quite expensive.

This display will showcase wedding finery and accessories down the decades of the wedding group, parents of bride and groom and what the guests might have worn.  Garments worn by local identities will be featured where possible. Items on display will also include locally manufactured fabrics, local manufacturers and retailers, dressmakers and those associated with the production of other necessary items such as cake decorators and caterers.

“To Have and To Hold” traces the customs surrounding weddings through the decades, how fashions have changed, often in response to an event, society’s rules or historical circumstances.

Morpeth is an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a great experience for everyone who enjoys the pleasure of a walk in a country village with the opportunity of shopping and dining in unique style.

It's a little place not far from Maitland, with a history to make us all proud. Morpeth was once upon a time a busy river port and frontier town established during the late 1820's. The Heritage buildings and Bond Stores stand in testament indeed, Morpeth was the largest inland seaport of the new Australian colony and commercial icons Brambles, Simsmetal, Arnotts and Soul's Pharmacy were born in this magnificent place.

Set along the banks of the Hunter River, the drive to Morpeth is an added attraction. The green fields stretch for miles and the weeping willows sway in the breeze. It is very hard to find a place to match our beautiful Morpeth.

As you stroll through the cobblestoned village you will notice that Morpeth has everything from art galleries to specialty shops to a Trading Post and even a Bazaar. Local artisans and

craftspeople have their wares for sale throughout the town.

You will have the opportunity to taste locally made fudge and sip ginger beer. Fine fashion, teddy bears, art and craft, tempting treats to take home, beautiful jewellery, home furnishings and objects of interest, we promise that you will find them in Morpeth.

A range of restaurants and cafes offer al fresco dining, river views, heritage surroundings and a cosmopolitan standard of menu. Grab a bottle of the finest wine available for tasting from the local wine cellar then select your café, even the most finicky of foodies will find something to their liking.

Morpeth does have its own museum, a service that traces family names and shields, St Johns Theological college and is home to the beautiful St James church to name but a few of the significant buildings throughout the town.

Just down the road a way is a structure of a different nature. The infamous Maitland Gaol is now open to the public, experience what it's like to walk in the footsteps of some of Australia's

most notorious criminals.

Morpeth, the town, the heritage, the buildings and carriage ways make this a place to not only visit but make a regular event.

What to See & Do■ Morpeth is National Trust classified, so take one of the Heritage Walks - enjoy the colorful history of Morpeth and its characters - in a living museum of Australia’s past.

■ The streets of Morpeth are home to over 40 specialty shops and boutiques. Browse the gift shops, antique shops, galleries, lolly shops, a tea house, ginger beer factory and bakery.

■ Visit the Morpeth Museum housed in the old Court House built in 1862.

Tocal - Paterson - Vacy - East Gresford - Gresford

The Allyn & Paterson River Valley

Tocal Road, PatersonPh: 4939 8901 w/days; 4939 8939 w/ends

Open every weekend from March to Nov 30th 10am – 3pm. When you visit Tocal Homestead its not hard to imagine days gone by. Tales of architects and graziers, bushrangers, businessmen, social reform and philanthropy are woven through the highs and lows of life on this unique property.

There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape vines in 1843.

Here you will discover the geographically blessed towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops.

First stop could be historic Tocal Homestead for tales of the olden days of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the

greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for weddings and milestone celebrations.

Paterson has inspired many artists to pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Take the time to look at the many fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style.

9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. It is well worth a visit to the café, hotel, arts & crafts shop and general store for a taste of country hospitality, great food and quirky crafts. Travel over the Vacy bridge, circa 1898, to Bunna Bunoo olive grove and gift shop. You can see

the roof tops of the cabins and lodges such as Banjos Bushland Retreat and Cabins in the Clouds on Mt George, perfect destinations for weekend getaways or a longer stay.

The small towns of Gresford and East Gresford are the gateway to Lostock Dam, Mt Allyn and the Chichester State Forest to the north. Take the Allyn River Road drive past homesteads set among rolling green hills and granite outcrops. Visit Clevedon craft shop, Natural Furniture Works, the Beatty Hotel and Camyr Allyn winery. History lovers will enjoy a drive to St Anne’s Anglican Church and suspension bridge, and St Mary’s on Allyn at Allynbrook.

For more information on the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, please go to www.apvt.com.au

Airlie House & Motor Inn, Scone a warm and friendly welcome for allWe stayed at Airlie House Motel and Restaurant for two nights at the Highland Games in 2012 and we couldn’t recommend it highly enough. From the moment we walked through the door we were made to feel very welcome by Wes, Tracy and all of the staff and the service was outstanding. The hotel was full due to the event in Aberdeen but nothing was too much trouble and the food…! It has a well-deserved reputation for great food and we could not fault breakfast or dinner. Everything is made with fresh ingredients, is beautifully cooked and presented. Originally a Victorian mansion, it has a relaxing, cosy ambience, made all the more inviting by the smiles of the staff (and guests). The whole place just lends itself to settling back and taking it easy. It is comfortable and affordable. If you’re heading to the Upper Hunter – a stay at Airlie House is a must.
