Activity teaching tips
The hundreds chart / number board
“A number board can be thought of as a number track that has been arranged into multiple rows of equal length. The
number on each tile in a number board indicates the distance from zero to the end of that tile.... Zero is not a measurable
distance or quantity, so it is not represented on a number board” (Irons & Burnett, 2009, p3).
The hundreds chart is a well known visual model that provides a structure for numbers, usually 1-100. It “has a multitude of
uses for developing counting, patterning, base ten, addition and subtraction, and multiplication and division fact knowl-
edge” (Bobis, Mulligan & Lowrie, 2013, p.214).
Purpose
This activity is designed to give students practice with using place value concepts by reconstructing a hundreds chart to:
assist with counting and ordering in Year 1(BOSNSW, 2012, p.68)
identify number sequences on number charts in Year 2 (BOSNSW, 2012, p.70)
Furthermore, it allows students to ’see’ that when you move left and right only the ones digit (1 to 100 chart) or the tenths
digit (0.1 to 10 chart) or the hundredths digit (0.01 to 1 chart) changes. But when you move up and down, only the tens
digit (1 to 100 chart) or the ones digit (0.1 to 10 chart) or the tenths digit (0.01 to 1 chart) changes. This leads to strengthen-
ing an understanding of counting in tens, ones, tenths and hundredths (1) and standard partitioning.
When to use
The activity can be ‘plugged in’ at any time of the school year once students have the required pre-requisite skills.
Duration
30 minutes when introduced to the whole class for the first time.
10 minutes as a Daily Number Sense activity or a lesson break activity.
Student grouping
Individual, student centred, self paced, self checking.
This activity is intended to be used during a whole class differentiated lesson.
In K-4 it may be used with all 30 students. However in grades 5-8, it may be
used for intervention. As it is self paced and targeted to individual students learning needs, there is no need to seat
students of similar ability together.
If you are not using the jigsaws with the whole class (E.g. other students may be using Hundreds Chart Worksheets or
Hundreds Chart Window Spins) seat students using the jigsaws resource in the same physical space in the classroom to
assist with classroom management.
Equipment for each student
A hundreds chart baseboard (double sided): Either ’1 to 100 and blank’ OR ‘–49 to 50 and blank’.
A jigsaw puzzle suited to their ability level, then a jigsaw puzzle that comes next in the developmental sequence.
Note: Sets of 6 jigsaws of the same type and 6 baseboards can be commercially purchased from Anita Chin Mathematics Consultancy.
Price ~ $20.00 . Release date ~ November, 2015. E [email protected]
Equipment for the teacher
Initial teacher introduction and demonstration requires:
Concrete material version of a hundreds chart. E.g. 1-100 flip array hundreds chart or
1-120 flip array number chart (65 x 55) cm as shown in the picture opposite.
Available from Anita Chin Mathematics Consultancy, E [email protected]
Interactive whiteboard software for hundreds charts. E.g. Flare: Number Board by Origo
Education.
Available as an annual online subscription from Origo Education, W www.origoeducation.com/flare
Online demonstration lessons
Video footage (80 mins, 9 videos) of this activity in action in K-6 classrooms is available through
my online course Differentiating Instruction: Place Value Concepts, K-6. For more information

Creating and storing the jigsaw puzzles and baseboards
Jigsaw puzzles: A class set typically consists of 6-12 jigsaw puzzles of each relevant set (there are 14 different sets, A - N).
Print your required quantity of the relevant jigsaw set onto A4 coloured paper. Use a different coloured sheet of paper
for each jigsaw to assist with keeping all 10 / 23 pieces of each separate puzzle together that are in your class set. If
you do not have a large range of coloured paper, simply mark the back of each jigsaw piece with a unique identifier
such as drawing different shapes on the back of each puzzle or drawing a in a different colour for each puzzle.
Laminate then cut out the jigsaw along the bolded lines.
Place each jigsaw into it’s own separate snap lock bag (16 x 10) cm. Label each bag according to the set E.g. Set C
Place all separate jigsaws from the same set into one snap lock bag (22 x 25) cm to make the class set. Label the bag
with the set name, title, and teacher’s name E.g. Set C '1 to 100 Hundreds Chart Jigsaw: All Numbers'. Miss Chin.
Store all your different class sets in one large snap lock bag (27 x 33) cm. Label as ‘Hundreds Chart Jigsaw Puzzles’.
Baseboards: You will require one baseboard per student.
Print your required quantity of the relevant baseboards onto white paper:
‘1 to 100 base board’ Print ‘1 to 100 Hundreds Chart’ (page 4) back-to-back with ‘Blank Hundreds Chart’ (page 5).
‘-49 to 50 base board’ Print ‘-49 to 50 Hundreds Chart’ (page 6) back-to-back with ‘Blank Hundreds Chart’ (page 5).
Optional: As shown in the photos, I trim then glue the white hundreds charts onto coloured paper to create a border.
Cut off excess paper at the bottom of the page then laminate each baseboard.
Store all your baseboards in one large snap lock bag (27 x 33) cm. Label as ‘Hundreds Chart Boards’.
Activity instructional sequence The differentiated jigsaw puzzles
There are 14 developmentally sequenced jigsaw puzzles labelled as sets A-N:
Set A '1 to 100 Hundreds Chart Jigsaw: Horizontal Strips' suitable for K-1.
Set B '1 to 100 Hundreds Chart Jigsaw: Vertical Strips' suitable for K-1.
Set C '1 to 100 Hundreds Chart Jigsaw: All Numbers' suitable for Y1.
Set D '1 to 100 Hundreds Chart Jigsaw: Missing Numbers' suitable for Y1.
Set E '301 to 400 Hundreds Chart Jigsaw: All Numbers' suitable for Y2-3.
Set F '301 to 400 Hundreds Chart Jigsaw: Missing Numbers' suitable for Y2-3.
Set G '801 to 900 Hundreds Chart Jigsaw: All Numbers' suitable for Y2-3.
Set H '801 to 900 Hundreds Chart Jigsaw: Missing Numbers' suitable for Y2-3.
Set I '0.1 to 10 Hundreds Chart Jigsaw: All Numbers' suitable for Y4.
Set J '0.1 to 10 Hundreds Chart Jigsaw: Missing Numbers' suitable for Y4.
Set K '0.01 to 1 Hundreds Chart Jigsaw: All Numbers' suitable for Y4-5.
Set L '0.01 to 1 Hundreds Chart Jigsaw: Missing Numbers' suitable for Y4-5.
Set M '-49 to 50 Hundreds Chart Jigsaw: All Numbers' suitable for Y6-7.
Set N '-49 to 50 Hundreds Chart Jigsaw: Missing Numbers' suitable for Y6-7.
Allow students to select their own level of difficulty for their entry point jigsaw. Then move
students forward by following the developmental sequence of jigsaws.
Instructional sequence
Hand out the relevant baseboard to each student.
Hand out the first jigsaw to students. Start by moving around the room with the easiest
set selected by students (E.g. Set C), then move around the room again and hand out
the next set (E.g. Set D), then the next set. This assists with monitoring which students are
working at which level of difficulty.
Students first complete their jigsaw puzzle by matching the numbers onto the numbered side of the baseboard.
Students then remove all the pieces, turn over the baseboard to the blank side, and complete the puzzle again.
OBSERVATIONAL ASSESSMENT. This is when teachers can observe whether students:
- look for the piece that has a 1 on it and places it on the board, then they look for the piece that has a 5 on it etc.;
- pick up any piece (E.g. With 74 on it) and places it on the board by counting;
- pick up any piece (E.g. With 74 on it) and places it on the board by moving down the 4th column to the eighth row.
