JUST SOMETHING ABOUT A LETTER By CPT William G Thompson, LCSW, BCD, 568th MCGA BHO

As I write this piece, I am reminded of the progress since I was last in Korea 13 years ago. Between FaceTime and free apps on smart phones, connecting with loved ones back home, for free, has become as easy as pie.

Now you may ask: What does that have to do with mental health? I am glad you asked. All those instant messages, quick calls home and video chats are great but they are like pie. It tastes good and it’s enjoyable, but they’re not really as satisfying as a full meal with meat and vegetables. I often hear people talk about how difficult it can be to have a long distance relationship, especially when there has been hurt in their past (especially if the hurt has been in the current relationship). But healing and growth can accrue if you are willing to put forth the effort and cook a full meal and not just eat pie.

Continue to engage in video and instant messaging but write a letter once in a while. A letter/card tells the person on the other end that you actually took time out of your day to sit and think about them. It shouldn’t be just a quick note of convenience, but a thoughtful message. You, as the sender, are the last person to touch the letter before it is placed in an envelope. The person receiving it is the first person to see the letter since you last touched it. To some, this means a great deal. And I am not just talking about romantic relationships. You can write letters to parents, friends and siblings - anyone who you want to make sure knows how important they are to you - even, and especially, to your children. Have you ever seen the face of a child who gets a letter?

My grandson knows when I am out of the country he can count on letters from me and will often ask his mother before I am even gone, “Has papaw written me yet?” If your child hasn’t learned to read, get a coloring book and color a picture for them, like they do for you. Or better yet, color part of the picture and let them finish it. This makes it a souvenir for them and you when you get home.

Letters to loved ones become precious tokens to the people who receive them. This helps in your own personal mental health in that when the home front is secured and stable you are more focused on the mission at hand. When you are more focused on the mission at hand you are able to accomplish more. When you accomplish more you feel better about yourself and are less stressed. Thus your mental health is better. It’s a self-fulfilling cycle of positive energy.

For more tips about creative communications back home, feel free to visit the Camp Humphreys TMC and stop by the behavioral health desk to ask for the handout on communicating back home.

Spread over 20 beautiful, natural and serene acres, my husband and I recently visited The Vijitt Resort in Phuket, Thailand. The resort features 92 spacious stand-alone villas, strategically placed along gently, sloping, forested land. What did we love the best? What did we NOT love is a better question.

Located in Rawai, southeast of Phuket, the resort has a private 250 meter stretch of secluded beach and enjoys stunning views across Chalong Bay to Cape Panwa, Lon and the Coral Islands.

Want to charter a boat? Hire a car? Ride horses to trot along the beach? The resort makes all of the above available to you. No matter what time it was or what we wanted to do, a quick call and conversation with

the lobby staff and they gave us all the information to make it happen.

The resort retains much of it original charm by incorporating the land’s mature palms, fruit and other indigenous flora into the overall design. Traveling time from the airport is 50 minutes and 30 minutes to Phuket Town and Patong Beach.

Romantic Escapes

to the Vijitt Resort, PhuketBy Annie Edwards

Equipped with 92 stand-alone villas, each spacious with large bathrooms, twin wash basins, an outdoor rain shower, an extra large bath tub, decked balconies and / or terraces, sun loungers, air-conditioning, a ceiling fan and free high speed internet access (cable & WIFI).

Although there is a lot to do in Phuket, the Vijitt does a fabulous job of making everything accessible on-site at the resort without ever having to leave. On the property there are two restaurants, a kids’ club play area, a gym, Spa – great for massages and other beauty treatments - and a salt water chlorinated infinity pool that looks over the ocean. Upon arrival, an activity list is provided. We loved the Thai cooking class, yoga classes and the botanical walk around the property.

Free shuttle buses (scheduled daily) drop guests off and provide a pickup service, to and from popular areas of the island, all of the beaches, as well as to sunset viewing points at virtually no transportation cost. Don’t want to take the shuttle? No problem! The bus / van / car rental and

chauffeured services by the resort is great for those traveling in groups, families with children, or simply if you don’t want to haggle with the local tuk tuk drivers on a daily basis. This was our favorite way to travel around. It was very comfortable along with affordable!

Great location, fabulous service and an exceptional experience later, we give The Vijitt Resort a full five stars - relaxing, romantic and very memorable.

TIP: Email them before you book online; sometimes they have special offers / deals, that may not be advertised online. Call and give them your credit card details over the phone if you aren’t comfortable using the website.

For more information check out their website: http://www.vijittresort.com

Jeju-do is the largest island in Korea. It is a volcanic island located to the southwest

of the Korean Peninsula. The island boasts fascinating historical relics and a

unique folk culture. Blessed with a great natural environment, Jeju-do is home to

countless fresh regional products, and its culinary tradition is simple and natural.

Seafood is bountiful and the livestock industry is also well developed. Locally,

there are many dishes centered on pork, chicken and fish. The food is characterized

by the spare use of seasonings to highlight the natural flavors of each

dish’s ingredients. This feature makes the regional food of Jeju-do highly popular

among tourists.

Heukdwaeji gui (화덕 구이): grilled black pork

The native Jeju boars with shiny black fur have successfully accustomed

themselves to the island’s nature and climate. The so-called “black pork,” when compared with other types of

pork, is more tender and chewy due to its fine muscular fibers and because the

fat is evenly spread across the meat. It is also a bit thicker, giving the meat more

juiciness. The meat should be grilled on a pan and is served with various types of

vegetables and sauces.

Heukdwaeji gui

Jeju-do

52

Okdom gui (옥돔 구이): grilled sea breamThe red tilefish, or okdom in Korean, is one

of the most beloved fish of Jeju. Diners can eat the fish raw, or boil it into a soup or porridge. Grilling, however, is the best

way to get the fish’s great taste. Dried under the sun and the wind of the island,

tilefish are placed on a grill for cooking with an additional drop of sesame oil for taste.

It is moist, soft and delicious. A piece of grilled tilefish goes perfectly with a bowl of

steamed rice.

Haemultang (해물탕): fresh seafood hot pot

Available throughout Jeju, Haemultang is a seafood hot pot with an invigorating and flavorful broth. To make the dish, a variety

of seafood and vegetables are placed in a hot pot with the broth and the dish is

boiled on the spot. The various ingredients combine into a delightful mix of flavors. In some coastal regions of Jeju, the dish can contain abalone, octopus, sea cucumber,

and sea squirt freshly caught by local female free divers.

Momguk (몸국): nutritious gulfweed soup

Mom is Jeju dialect for gulfweed, which is rich in fat, calcium and vitamins and grows in between rocks in the sea. The tender leaves are picked and used in local dishes. On Jeju

Island, Momguk is a dish frequently eaten for private occasions such as celebrations

and condolences. The bones and intestines are used to make the broth, to which

gulfweed is added and boiled.

Galchi jorim (갈치 조림): hot and spicy braised cutlassfish

Galchi jorim, or braised cutlassfish, is available in restaurants in the Seogwipo

area of Jeju. It is made with fresh cutlassfish. It is seasoned with soy sauce, red pepper

flakes and hot pepper paste, so the dish is hot, spicy and red in color. The cutlassfish is prepared by being gutted and then cut into pieces that are 7 to 8 centimeters long. The dish is braised for some time and the heat is

turned off when the liquid begins to thin.
