Called of God

“Whom shall I send, and Who WIll go for us? Then saId

I, here am I; send me.”

Isaiah 6:8

God did not address the call to Isaiah; Isaiah overheard God saying, “Who

will go for us?” The call of God is not for the special few, it is for everyone. Whether

or not we hear God’s call depends upon the state of our ears; and what we hear

depends upon our attitude. “Many are called but few are chosen,” that is, few

prove themselves the chosen ones. The chosen ones are those who have come

into a relationship with God through Jesus Christ whereby their attitude has been

altered and their ears unstopped, and they hear the still small voice questioning

all the time, “Who will go for us?” It is not a question of God singling out a person

and saying, “Now, you go.” God did not lay a strong compulsion on Isaiah; Isaiah

was in the presence of God and he overheard the call, and realized that there

was nothing else for him but to say, in conscious freedom, “Here am I, send me.”

Get out of your mind the idea of expecting God to come with compulsions and

pleadings. When our Lord called His disciples there was no irresistible compulsion

from outside. The quite passionate insistence of His “Follow Me” was spoken to

men with their ability to say “no” in place. If we let the Spirit of God bring us face

to face with God, we too shall hear something similar to what Isaiah heard, the still

LONE CEDAR TICKETS At the end of November, the His K.R.E.W. youth girls took an

afternoon to sell tickets for the Lone Cedar fund raiser. We picked them up from school in the church van and took them through parts of Manteo and Wanchese. They sold 100 tickets!! It was a long afternoon and they worked very hard! After selling tickets Marla treated them to dinner at La Fogatas! Thank you girls for all your hard work. And thank you Marla for dinner!

PARADES On the first and second weekends of December the kids were in the Manteo and Wanchese parades. We used crab pots and paper fish that the kids made along with garland and Christmas ornaments to decorate our float. Everyone had a great time! A huge thank you to Pastor Ken and Rosie for driving the van in the Manteo parade and to Marcy and Edward Lee for the pizza dinner during our night of float decorating! Also thank you to all the parents who volunteered the night before and then walked in the parade with us! We had about 30 kids each

time!

SINGING AND DANCING On November 27th, the His KREW girls' choir sang at the Wanchese Community Building during the First Annual Wanchese Lighting of the Tree! Right after that they sang and danced at our church's annual "Hanging of the Greens" service. There were 21 girls in the program!

They practiced very hard for about 6 weeks, learning the dance and songs. We couldn't have pulled this off without all our wonderful volunteers. Dionne Glover helped with the singing and Madison O'Neal choreographed and taught the girls the dance. At one point we had 3 generations of dancers helping these girls. Mrs. Lisa Heath and Mrs. Libby Allen helped out as well. A special thank you to you all for spending almost 2 months preparing these girls. And I can't say enough about how proud I am of the girls for stepping out of their comfort zones and giving it their all! They sang and danced their hearts out for the Lord this Christmas season! COOKIE PARTY

On December 9th, His KREW had a cookie party! They decorated cookies of all shapes and sizes, ate pizza, and watched the original version of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas'. I just want to say how thankful we are to everyone who donated sprinkles and candy, as well as

made cookies for this event! And a special thank you to Jessica Davenport who organized all the cookie fun and made it happen! SUNDAY MORNING CHRISTMAS PROGRAM On Sunday the 18th the children did a small Christmas program! The girls sang and danced again and the boys told the story of Christmas and acted it out. Thank you to Connie Bateman for all her help with this program! THANK YOU I would like to thank each and every one of our church

family for your help and support in our church's children and youth ministry.

PRESCHOOL NEWS

During the month of December, the Preschoolers made some ornaments for the small Christmas tree that Mrs. Gayle set up in

the Preschool room. The children chose to make a Santa Claus or a snowman ornament. The children also colored a picture of Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus that was put on the bulletin board outside the Preschool room. with their pictures in front of the poinsettias. Mrs. Gayle took a group picture of the Preschoolers in front of the Christmas tree in the church sanctuary. Mrs. Gayle also took pictures of each child in front of the poinsettias.

On Tuesday, December 13th Mrs. Julie Tolson came and helped the parents and the Preschoolers to make gingerbread houses. The children and parents built the house and decorated them with all kinds of candy and icing. The children and the parents enjoyed making the gingerbread houses. The gingerbread houses were the parents’ presents.

On Thursday morning, December 15th at 10:30, Santa Claus came to visit the Preschoolers. He gave each of the children a present and a candy cane. The children had some treats after Santa's visit.

On Thursday evening, December 15th at 7:00, the Preschoolers gave their Christmas program. The children marched into the sanctuary to "Joy to the World". The parents and guests were welcomed to the program by Mrs. Gayle and Paige Berry. The children were asked questions about Christmas and whose birthday we celebrate. Of course, they answered Jesus. The children sang "Away in a Manger", "Go Tell It On the Mountain", "Mary Had A Baby". The children sang, all the first verse, Keyonna Brodie the second verse, Kate Ruhle the third verse, Saylor Callum the fourth verse , Alura Croswait the fifth verse, Ava Tisch the sixth verse, and all the last verse, The children then sang "The Friendly Beasts". The children sang "Happy Birthday Dear Jesus". They then sang "Jingle Bells" and "Santa Claus, Santa Claus” with Ava dressed as Santa. The last song they sang was "We Wish You A Merry Christmas". The children then spelled the word Christmas giving a meaning for each of the Christmas letters. The ending song was the "Twelve Days of Christmas" with the actions. The children did a wonderful job on the program. Mrs. Gayle prayed and wished everyone a Merry Christmas.

The children will be coming back to school on Tuesday, January 3, 2017. God has truly blessed this Preschool.

The January senior luncheon with the preschoolers and their families will

be Thursday, January 26 from 11:30 – 12:30. The preschoolers would like

to invite all seniors from Bethany to join them in the dining hall for a little

program and lunch.

GOOD TIDINGS

A Report on Bethany’s Table

By Nancy Gray

Wayne tells me that the Hatterasmen of olden days liked to eat their dessert before their meal. I must have a little Hatteras in me because I

planned the dessert for December’s meal before the main course was ever thought of. Lish and Liz Ann brought me four large bags of shredded

carrots. I said, “Carrot cake,” and Lish said that was where his mind went, too.

Lish and Liz Ann also gave us a large bag of shoe peg corn and a pie pumpkin which became corn with a butter sauce and a Caribbean style

pumpkin rice. When I saw pork loin on sale for $1.59 a pound, the menu was complete.

Bill Wilson reported that there was a little fender-bender in the church parking lot between two drivers. I am not sure who was involved, but

Button claims she had nothing to do with it. In God’s mercy, no one was hurt and the vehicles did not sustain any damage.

We welcomed a new kitchen helper, Dawn Sessler, and a new deliverer, Ainsley Casey.

Pastor Ken and Rosie are thinking ahead, donating three large turkeys for the next Bethany’s Table. If anyone has a turkey left after the

holidays, we could help you make room in your freezer.

Thirty volunteers served 180 meals in December. Our food cost, including the Styrofoam tray, was $1.18 per person.

HAITI MSSION

Since the return of the mission team from the November Haiti trip, the money that was left for the Haitian workers to continue work has provided a gate for the wall that was finished by the November team. Also, the workers continued working on the stucco on the front of the church. The church building is starting to shape up to be a really nice looking building. We will be returning to Haiti after the New Year to work with orphanages from around the area. We will

be doing repairs, building desks and chairs, and feeding orphans and families. Anyone interested in helping with donations to purchase rice and beans for the feeding, can make checks payable to Bethany UMC, in the memo write: rice and beans. A family of 5 can eat for 2 weeks on a simple $20 donation. So for every $20 donated, a family is fed for 2 weeks. But, any amount helps! Whether it be $5 or any other amount, it all adds up to feed a lot of people. Thank you & God Bless; Craig and Chetty Parker

CLEANING THE KITCHEN

From the Senior/Preschool

Luncheon to Bethany’s Table,

from His K.R.E.W. to funeral

receptions, our kitchen gets a

lot of use and has been a wonderful tool for ministry.

Now it is in need of a good, deep cleaning.

If you are able to help, please come out on

Saturday, January 21 at 9:00 a.m., for a cleaning

party. If we have enough helpers, we can tackle the

pantry, too.

In preparation for that day, please try to pick up

your dishes. Items that have been in the kitchen for

a long time and that are not useful will be sent to the

thrift store.

On Sunday, January 29th, during the 11:00 am

worship service, we will observe memorial Sunday.

We will invite family members who have lost a

loved one this year to be our guests. There will be a

candle for each loved one who passed away between

January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2016.

IGNITE! It is with Christians as with burning coals. If these are scattered apart, one after the other, they are easily extinguished. But, when collected together, the fire of one preserves that of the other, and the glowing coals often ignite others that lie near. —August Francke
